ParticipantWow, and I thought my week was bad.
Sorry to hear about the jeep, and hopefully the nephew will recover from the ordeal and not follow in his father’s footsteps.
Ditto, especially about the nephew. Best wishes for peace & comfort to all involved in that situation.

ParticipantYep. I mentioned that back when I first noticed it. Not only does the same image posted in different threads get a unique URL, I think the URL for a given image also periodically changes.
It also breaks the pop-to-original/larger-image feature on Bibliostats. Clicking on images now takes you to a Fark 403 page.

ParticipantAwww, man, that really sucks. So sorry about Penny, ‘Cuda. She looks like such a sweet happy pup.
// Love that last shot, though.

ParticipantSo just FYI in case Bibliostats goes tits up, I’m heading out with my youngest to Wakarusa this afternoon and will be off the grid for the duration of this contest. I’ve got the scraper setup, but if something goes wrong, I’ll have to address it when I get back Monday.
Good luck everyone!

ParticipantOh, and we let the violators battle in the photodome, and whoever is the last standing gets his or her own votes back.
Two farktographers enter, one farktographer leaves! Is Tina Turner gonna officiate this one, too? 🙂

ParticipantJust caught the contest number for this week (#420). I’m thinking maybe we should’ve gone with a Classic Green or even a Vegetation or Weeds theme. 😉
Anyway, I’m out again this week. The only monochromatic potential entries I could dig up are concert photos under colored lights and those never do well.

ParticipantStudent discount at places that don’t bother checking IDs
I had a son, raised him, sent him to college, and then had him buy me a student edition just before graduating last December. I think it would’ve been cheaper to just buy the full-priced version. 😕

ParticipantFWIW – does anybody else hate Win8? I tried helping a student with some laptop issues (she didn’t have MSOffice, and I was helping her find Wordpad and explaining what OpenOffice is), and Win8 is really clunky to use, especially if you’re not using a touch screen. Finding anything was a bitch. It’s a case of fixing what ain’t broken to address issues that don’t exist on all platforms. Bleah. I’m hoping there will be a setting where I can make it look like “regular” windows…
I bought my wife a Surface recently and you’re right, the Metro interface of Win8 does take some getting used to. It isn’t quite as bad on a touchscreen, though.
You’re not alone in your complaint, and from what I’ve heard, the new release of Win8 (8.1 or Windows Blue I think they call it) supports switching to the “classic” interface.

ParticipantNo, I definitely had the same thought. It didn’t feel right thinking it, but one thought was even “man, that’d make for a great set of entries for a man vs nature theme!”
The problems, though, are time (isn’t it always?), and access. If it just skirted the outside of the town or was fairly localized, that’d be one thing, but with it impacting an entire town and with so much destruction and injury and so many people wanting to come in and help, the authorities are really restricting access. Maybe after they’ve had a chance to clean up a bit. I don’t know; I think I’d still feel uneasy being a “looky-loo” or tourist in the middle of so much real suffering and heartache. I’m not sure I’m cut out to be a photojournalist.

ParticipantAnd you as well, ‘Cuda.

ParticipantYugoboy, my opinion would be to go glass first, with an eye toward compatibility with your future full-frame body, for a couple of reasons:
- The output of bad glass on a good body will still look like crap whereas that of good glass on an OK body will at least look as good as the body is capable of producing.
- While the features on good lenses don’t really change that much over time, the features on a good body improve with every release, so if you start with glass, by the time you’re ready for the body, it’ll likely be a better body than the one you otherwise would’ve had.

ParticipantThanks much for your concern, fluffy. We’ve got several bands heading this way and family & friends all around the area so it’s going to be a watchful night. Our oldest lives in Shawnee and last night’s tornado there came within 2 miles of him but he and his belongings made it through unscathed. The “upside” to it is that I think it finally convinced him to stop procrastinating and get himself some renter’s insurance!

ParticipantNever been on the White River, but I lived in Little Rock in the early 90’s and there was a group at work there that took an annual trip down the Buffalo (around Harrison, AR) in early April. That was always a lot of fun, both the canoeing and “apres-canoeing” activities. And you’re right – it is beautiful country. Shame it’s wasted on Arkansans. 😛

ParticipantRight now, no further than White River reserve. If I can convince the friend that I’m staying with to take a mini-trip to Hot Springs and/or Crater of Diamonds, I’d be all about that. You’re in Oklahoma, no?
Indeed I am. Tulsa to be specific. If you come within 3 hours or so (maybe longer if it’s a weekend), that’d make a handy excuse for a cycle trip.
For that matter, if you want to visit OK for a couple of days, you’re welcome here. I’ve got two empty bedrooms.

ParticipantHow far west into Arkansas are you planning to venture?
