ParticipantThanks Els.

ParticipantSomebody (Yugoboy maybe) in a different thread here told of a Fark party where he was talking to Drew (and someone else) and that they mentioned that they were going to start hosting images. This is completely from memory so I could be way off base. If accurate, perhaps related to your observations.
Yeah, I remember that; it was yoyo. I didn’t link the two because I assumed that meant a site where one’s images could be hosted and not a site that was going to host all images.
As for “no more scarlet R’s” I can say that some people have a gift. Elsinore caught one I didn’t know I had done. I definitely used a different file name, because I use “Save For Web” and name each one for the contest it goes with, so the two files had different names, but she figured it out anyway.
I’ve done that (caught a renamed repost) several times myself and based on my experience, you should consider Els’ catch of your repost a compliment – it means the original made enough of an impression to be memorable.
While it will end the practice of auto-scanning for them, I think that if/when the image is good enough (and even when it ain’t) most of the time people with better attention to detail than I will be able to figure it out.
Yeah, but that’s really not an easy task, even when you have a suspicion and then have to go verify or refute it.
I expect the Bibliostats site to implement a multi-point image comparison tool that can be run across with web showing how well it compares to each of the images in your database by next week!
If only it paid the bills, I’d jump on that request. It’d be an interesting task. But, that actually is on the long-range plans for the site. I’ve already found an opensource library that more or less calculates a “fingerprint” of an image that can be compared with others to determine likeness. If image rehosting becomes permanent, I may have to up its priority in the implementation queue.

ParticipantIs this astrophotography enough? http://www.flickr.com/photos/guine/8110449297/in/set-72157633426364098
orionid will have to answer the specific question, but I can say this – it’s gorgeous!

ParticipantWell, I really do understand the craving to be an early adopter, especially for this technology. I have no idea what I’d do with, but I still want one, too.
I’ve learned over the years that often (not always, but often) if you can deny yourself for a little while, you’ll be happier with the end result (i.e., cheaper and/or more features/stability). That said, if it’s something you truly want NOW, if you can live with the fact that next year’s model will likely be 2/3rds of the price with twice the features, and if you can afford it without neglecting necessities, hey, it’s your money and money’s no good unless you can use it to make yourself (or those you love) happy.
If I made cool shit for cheap, would y’all buy from me?
I wouldn’t buy something just because you made it, but if it was something I wanted/needed/liked, I’d definitely buy from you before looking elsewhere.
Hell, I didn’t get a smart phone until last year.
Ha! Me, too. Still don’t use it much, although since I work from home and get crappy cell reception here, I don’t use a cellphone in general too much. I did find it really handy to keep track of sports scores during the college football & basketball seasons.

ParticipantVery much appreciate the heads-up, rav, although I won’t be able to take advantage of it. Just too much going on right now to get out and shoot so I’ll be skipping this Farkstronomy.

ParticipantI like it already. I can post at leisure when I have time to think about it, and now I can go to astronomy club meetings and trivia night at the bar without worrying about posting from my phone or beng late to the party (or forgetting altogether for that matter).
Yeah, I can see where that’d be really handy, but I just realized that it also kills my payback-for-the-soda-can-lens idea. I was going to port the autoposter code in my scraper to a standalone app so that you (first, and then others) could use it for posting while away from the computer. Well, crap, I’ll have to think of something else then.
// Good thing I didn’t start it yet. I may still do it for the non-TFers, but it’s certainly less of a priority now since most of y’all are TFers.

ParticipantSince the hopper is managable again and participation is down a bit, maybe we ought to think about lowering the vote requirement to 9 again. I’m not pulling for any particular pony at the moment, just saying.
I was thinking the same thing, but I do have two ponies in the race, so I wasn’t going to be the first to say it.

ParticipantSo I pulled the trigger… w00t. I’m giddy like a schoolgirl waiting on them.
Congrats on the new toys! 🙂

ParticipantIf he’s a good businessman and was sincere in his original question, he’ll appreciate any feedback that’s presented in a non-confrontational manner. If you care enough about him and/or his business to want to take the time to provide your opinion, I’d say go for it.
Having said that, while the photography side of me knows exactly what you’re saying (& feels similarly), the business side of me has a couple of questions: When you say the poor photographers make more money because they take more photos, does that imply that they also sell more of their photos? If so, the public doesn’t seem to care so there’s not really much business reason for him to prefer good photographers over the poor ones; probably even less so because poor photographers likely won’t have a lot of other opportunities to choose from, which would allow him to offer lower wages.
If you sincerely want him to change his practices, you’ll have to approach it with the business side in mind. Do the better photographers sell a higher percentage of the shots they take? Are there upsell packages available that the better photographers have more success selling? (I’d imagine the creativity required to be a good photographer would help a lot there.) Show him where quality will boost profits and that’ll get his attention.
Oh and also, condolences on your job. 🙁 It’s easy for me to say, of course, but it’s probably for the best if it’s truly that bad; in the long run, it’d likely make you grow to despise something that you currently love.
