ParticipantCongrats bender16v on the sweep of individual and combined. Excellent showing!
Speaking of excellent showings, this is our highest voted contest since Birds 2 back in June of last year! Now if we could only figure out a way to keep those voters coming back each week…

ParticipantAnybody Seen CISS? Doesn’t look like BiblioStats is working.
Sorry about that everyone. I was up really late this morning preparing for my son’s traffic court and totally forgot about starting the scraper. (Turns out I can’t represent or speak for him or question the officer myself and we needed to submit any kind of evidence to the prosecutor 10 days ago, so it was all GD MF’ing wasted effort. Basically, we’d need to hire a freaking attorney to fight a damn $200 ticket in traffic court. Yeah, I’m a little upset. But our insurance company is still fighting it and they’re using my report, so maybe it wasn’t all for naught.)
Els, now that Bibliostats is current again, aside from some Scarlet R’s, I see that Kryler also has 5 entries. One of these days I’ll add that check into the R’s report.

ParticipantNow I’m second thinking…damn…how do we thread the consistency needle on this one?
Yeah, that’s the line of thinking that got me asking for an opinion in the first place. 😉
So, as Els mentioned above, the opinion I sought from her should really be a group consensus. How much territory does/should “hootenanny” cover? The specific technique I’m asking about consists of stacking two or more shots of the same scene with slightly different settings and then selectively allowing sections of one or the other to be visible.
Here are links to a couple of examples:
// Originally wanted to keep this on the down-low ’cause I know y’all are some creative sumbitches. 😛 But, as you can see, the idea didn’t exactly originate with me.

ParticipantHonestly, I would say that unless you’re stacking the entire photo, then yes, adding single elements between photos would not be in line with this one.
Good to know, thanks. When stacking two shots of the same setting, is any non-uniform transparency masking allowed between the layers?
If you don’t mind, I’m going to PM you links to a couple of shots I was thinking of trying to reproduce for this one if they’re kosher.

Participant/Also loves me some lame jokes.
Oooh, me too! One of my favorite fatherly activities is looking for the lamest jokes I can find to torment my son with. I usually try to wait until we’re in the car to tell them so he’s a captive audience.
// Have you heard the one about the boy who hated lines? That was my most recent implement of torture. I drug that one out for at least 5 minutes before dropping the lameness on him.

ParticipantNOTE: No pasting or moving subjects not in the original photo(s) like in a PS contest.
Only caveat is that you still can’t cut/paste objects into or out of the photos as you would for a PS contest. (e.g. simple retouching is fine, removing light poles not so much)
So I find myself also in need of some clarification on this one. The first quote (from the theme’s description) seems to imply combining elements from different photos is OK as long as they’re all original photos (i.e., no clipart or digitally “painting” non-existent subjects). But the second quote (from the Fark discussion thread) seems to rule that out, in which case my entry in the previous incarnation of this theme should’ve been disqualified as each moon is a separate shot and wasn’t present in the original background photo.
Did I get by with a rule violation on the previous contest or am I trying to interpret the theme rules too strictly?

Participant+1. Just to be clear, though – Alterations to the image’s colors that would otherwise be disallowed are the only relaxed rules here, right?

ParticipantQuery: Can I make a photomosaic? I ask because it’s an image made up of photos, so it may occupy a grey area.
Yugoboy, I just saw that no one had commented on this yet, so here’s my two cents: As I recall, photomosaics are fine for this contest, but each photo (used as a “pixel” in the mosaic) is counted as being “used” and thus cannot be re-used in a future contest (that doesn’t explicitly allow reposts). Conversely, each component photo cannot have been entered in a prior contest.
That’s what’s kept me away from them mostly in contests where they might otherwise be allowed – the thought of “burning” so many potential future entries in one shot.

ParticipantI follow the Hippocratic Oath when it comes to photography: First, do no harm. Unless there is a compelling reason I will never release a photo showing my subject in an unflattering light. And the compelling reason cannot be “I get a paid a lot of money”
MAYBE if I were paid a shit load of money…
So, it’s like the old joke where the guy at the bar asks the lady next to him, “Madam, would you sleep with me for a million dollars?” and she answers, “Well, you’re not bad looking, so yes, I guess I’d do that.”
He then asks, “OK, would you sleep with me for fifty dollars?” She replies, “Of course not! What kind of girl do you think I am?” He replies, “We’ve already established that; now we’re just negotiating the price!” 😆

ParticipantCongrats, U-Man, on the sweep of individual and combined. It’s nice to be able to say that again. 🙂
It’s a good week for me…I filled out my top 10. I finally got a 7th place.
I know that feeling! But wow, not just top 10, that was your only holdout from 1st thru 42nd – congrats!
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantThe archives yielded nada and I ran out of time to try anything new, so I’m gonna have to watch this one from the sidelines.
U-Man, good to see you back. Your Migrant Mother last week was really well done and coincidentally timed for me. I was laid out sick the week before and spent part of that time to catch up on some DVR’d shows, one of which was Ken Burn’s “The Dust Bowl” documentary. (Really interesting if you’re into history.)

ParticipantEchoing congrats to Ranger Joe on the sweep of both individual and combined this week. The combined race was a particularly close one with only 8 votes separating 1st & 8th places.

ParticipantI’d go ahead and repost and I can pull the other version
Done. Thanks!

ParticipantIt’s kind of borderline, but not enough for me to be that concerned with. One of those, ‘Let the voters decide’ kinda things.
Thanks for the discretion, Els. I think the effect is a bit more subtle on the horse, so I’m gonna leave that one as is, but I did swap out the tent for its unprocessed version. Do you know if the Fark image verification bots take notice of that kind of thing? If so and it gets deleted and you happen to notice it, TIA for kindly resuscitating it. 🙂
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantOh crap, I missed that!
CauseISaidSo: If I delete the fourth entry, will Bibliostats delete it on its own or do you have to manually do that?
Pre-closing it would’ve, but once the contest closes the data becomes static so I’ll have to address it manually. It’s not a huge effort; that was only the dude’s second contest and it doesn’t affect any other stats so I just hadn’t gotten to it yet.
