ParticipantAnd on another note, aside from the time involved in these things – man, was that a lot of fun! Yugoboy and ennuipoet, if I could scrape together some more time, I’d come challenge y’all on your home PS turf! 🙂

ParticipantI managed to come up with two entries, but they’re both slightly different takes on the same technique. The second one was going to be a B-side because I didn’t want to have two somewhat similar entries, but since I don’t have enough A’s, I added a couple of elements to it and promoted it.
Sneak preview can be seen here. If you take a look, be sure and click for larger, especially on the first one. Since it started as a 5-shot panorama, it’s still quite nice and detailed at the larger size.

Participantorionid, my two cents are “After the Storm” and “Archway to Paradise” from the first set and “Persona” from the second set.
Nice work, BTW! I considered doing one of the front/side perspective shots like in your second set but ran out of time to gather new material & play with it.

ParticipantI’ve got a couple of DIY projects going that are eating my lunch right now. The way this weekend went, I may not have time to do any more than the one I’ve already got. I’m really pleased with the way it came out, but it’s been done before, so we’ll see how it plays.

ParticipantCongrats to Ranger Joe for the individual win and to swampa for the combined.
There was indeed a lot of good stuff this week. In particular, bender16v, I loved your yellow Lake Elsinore. I felt like I needed to squint every time I scrolled past it!

ParticipantAs long as they’re both your photos, I think it’s your choice of what to use for a background, Yugoboy.
I just finished my first entry last night. ‘Twas a lot of work, but I’m pretty happy with the result. Now, onto the next…

ParticipantCongrats, rav. Cool shots!

ParticipantThose are really nice, ‘Cuda, but that first one’s something special. You say that’s HDR? If so, it’s very well applied.

ParticipantHoly crap, indeed, chupa. That’s a lotta snow. We were supposed to get 2-3″ overnight but it came down as rain instead. Stay safe out there!

ParticipantThere are some versions from that shoot with little pieces flying about in the frame. Not sure Why I didn’t use one of them.
Oh, man, that would’ve made for an epic set of posts, especially if we could’ve coordinated and got our two entries close together in the thread! 😆

ParticipantJust to confirm, we good with cut and paste as long as the source images are our own, yes?
Since there’s no theme submitter to make the final decision; Els said she was fine with it as long as we got a consensus; and of those that voiced an opinion, the strong majority were in favor of a let-it-all-hang-out contest, I think the answer’s yes, fluffy.
Elsinore, you still good with that?

ParticipantKes has the final word, but the description specifically mentions ponds and even puddles, so I think you’re both OK. The defining factor from the description seems to be whether the water is in motion, so if it’s still (not flowing) water, it’s probably acceptable.

ParticipantCongrats to BecauseISaidSo this week! Very well played 😉 I’ve been wondering how you got the message to read that on the printer? Did you have to hack it?
Thanks Els! After the shocker bombed, I wasn’t sure how this one would play, but I guess it’s a little more specific to the theme.
Thanks also to everyone who voted. And congrats to fluffybunny on his combined win – a strong showing indeed.
As for the printer message, the status message on older HP printers (printers that use PCL – Printer Control Language) is programmable. So if you know the right PCL command, creating a program to set the status to whatever you want (as long as it’s 16 characters or less) is pretty simple.
When I first wrote the program a few years ago, I set the status to “FEED ME A CAT” and then waited to see how long it’d take until one of the kids noticed it. 🙂 I later changed it to “INSERT QUARTER” and tried to make some coin off of their homework, but the cheapskates never paid.
A note about that printer – that’s an HP Laserjet 4 Plus that I’ve had since the early-to-mid nineties. I put a new toner cartridge in it once a year and it just keeps going. I don’t think they make ’em like that anymore.

ParticipantWhat about the original definition. I’m too lazy to dig back through right now, but it was something akin to “HDR, Topaz, and other heavy-handed post-processing applications that would otherwise be forbidden.”
The original descriptions were:
- Any and all treatments not normally allowed software-wise are allowed/encouraged for this contest: artsy filters, exposure stacking/HDR, tilt-shift, stitching, etc. Note: No pasting or moving subjects not in the original photo(s) like a PS contest.
- Any and all treatments not normally allowed software-wise are allowed/encouraged for this contest: artsy filters, exposure stacking/HDR, tilt-shift fakes, stitching, etc. NOTE: No pasting or moving subjects not in the original photo(s) like in a PS contest.
BUT, that’s what we’re here discussing – whether we want this to be an all-out hootenanny or not. Those who offered opinions previously seemed to lean towards allowing anything. Should I put your vote in the “Nay” column?
As Yugoboy said, I’m fine either way, but we do need to nail this down pretty quickly so that we can all work within the same ruleset.

ParticipantSo let’s state the rules (or lack thereof) explicitly and see if we can get a final consensus. My interpretation of the feedback thus far (and also my personal vote) would be something like this:
“Anything goes, including combining multiple shots or elements thereof in any fashion you desire, but every pixel in your final image must have started its life as a pixel in a photo that you personally took. Note that all photos used in any way for this contest cannot be used in future contests.”
That rules out any straight-out “hand-created” elements, although we’ll likely have to rely on the honor system for that and reposts, but does that jive with what y’all were thinking? Speak now or forever hold your peace…
