ParticipantElsinore, assuming it’s not intentional, U-Man‘s entry at http://www.fark.com/comments/6602766/72024961#c72024961 has disappeared.

Participantthere are plenty of people here that shoot wild life as well or better than I do.
Yeah, maybe, but I think most of them are out on assignment with NatGeo, so you should be good (especially with that tiger or eagle b-side from last week). 🙂
That is a loooong story about why I switch from nikon to canon after shooting nikon film bodies for about 20 years.
Oooh, you can’t just say something like that and not provide details! Us Canonites need all the fodder we can get in the perpetual war with those heathen Nikonians. 😉
And happy 43rd, rav. Hope this year is a good one for ya.

ParticipantNice, Zero. I like the fade to deep orange in the first one (that’s a lot of freakin’ birds, too!). I like the last one, too; I think its appeal may be partially from the blue/orange complementary color scheme.

ParticipantYou’re right, sleeping, my bad. If we simplify to the smallest example, let’s say person A & B both enter the same two contests. Contest #1 has 1000 votes total so NVC=Votes, person A gets 10 votes/NVC and person B gets 20 votes/NVC. Contest #2 has 2000 votes total so NVC=Votes/2, person A gets 20 votes/10 NVC and person B gets 10 votes/5 NVC. Both people have 30 votes total, but person A has 20 NVC while B has 25 NVC.

ParticipantWhy aren’t these lists in the same order?
If everyone on the list entered in all 12 contests represented by the sliding quarter, then they would be the same. However, say person A and person B each only entered in 11 out of the 12 past contests, 10 of which are the same and 1 of which is different. Their vote totals could be tied, but if person A got 20 votes in a contest that had 1000 total (NVC of 20) and person B got 20 votes in a contest that had 2000 total (NVC of 10), then person A would have the greater summed percentage of total votes across the contests, even though they both had the same actual vote totals.
Does that clear it up?
p.s. BTW, loved your balloon shot.

ParticipantI saw this the other day, failed the first three and said, “screw this, I’m taking my toys and going home.” 🙂
I thought the small size of the images made it difficult to tell anything about the photos, but by some of your scores, evidently I just don’t have the eye for it.

ParticipantI’d agree that it’s pretty safe to congratulate aspidites at this point. Heck, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t end up doubling the second place for total votes.

ParticipantPlama, as awesome as a cross-collaboration sounds, I’m not sure my ego could withstand working with someone who’s actually still a master of higher math. “Use it or lose it” is a harsh reality for me and my math skills. By “implement”, I meant “integrate with an open-source library created by people who still understand this kind of stuff.” 🙂 The library I’ve got my eye on is at http://phash.org.

ParticipantGood call on the other two…they were definitely the same shot sized differently!
Thanks. Catching those made me re-look at the repost checking code and realize I needed to compensate for the variations in flickr links and remove trailing parameters (everything after the “.jpg” in the link) when comparing links. Doing that reveals about another 30 reposts over past contests that I missed when I first cleaned the data (including one more in this contest – sorry, LoveSandwich :(). The good news is that it’ll automatically catch these kinda things in the future.
Eventually, I’d like to move to a non-link-based dup checking mechanism (something like what schnee called “eigenimages”). But that’s likely a very long ways down the road…

Participant… Sorry for the long winded response 🙂
No apologies necessary, that was quite an interesting tale. I’m in software dev myself and would love to switch priorities to make travel/nature photography my primary pursuit and software dev a hobby. It’s awesome that it sounds like that may be working out for you. I can’t imagine how cool it would be to get paid to travel to beautiful places and take photos!

ParticipantOh, and the reason I stopped by: where’s the Fark photo finder, so I can find out if I’ve already submitted something….thanks
There’s not an “official” Fark photo finder, but you can see all of your past entries on your user page on BiblioStats: http://www.bibliostats.com/farktography/user/dstanley

Participantaspidites, your work is amazing. I dread seeing what you’re going to come up with for “Wild Things.” Actually, I don’t dread seeing them, just going up against them in the contest. 🙂
I think if you had’ve entered that second eagle B-side (_X0U7896Eagle.jpg), you very likely could’ve been looking at tied #1’s.
You mentioned shooting for a calendar – is photography your career?

ParticipantEls, when you look at the current Scarlet R for henryhill, you might want to check his other entries. The other two are from Book of Armaments. They don’t show up in the Scarlet R page because the file names aren’t an exact match, but they differ only in a trailing “_z”. I don’t use Flickr and therefore don’t know it’s link naming conventions, but I suspect that just means that they point to a differently-sized version of the same file.
Here are the filenames in the current contest:
