I don’t know where to find the fully domesticated variety myself, aspidites; I think they may have stopped manufacturing that model in the ’50s. But since those two weren’t flinging poo at each other or at SilverStag, I’m guessing they’re likely more on that end of the scale than the other.

SilverStag, as much as I’d like to have something positive come out of that situation (even if it’s only votes in a photo contest), and as much as I’m digging those pants :), I’m guessing those ladies are more domesticated than feral….

    +1

Although if we’re going by the song lyrics, it should be “Signs, signs, everywhere a sign” 🙂

Zero, as long as they’re not caged, that’s fine. I have a few “wild animals in my backyard” that I plan to use.

I just re-read this and saw that it could possibly be misinterpreted, so just to be clear: Animals caged as pets are out; caged, normally wild animals (like at a zoo) are OK.

QueenBee, caged wild animals are fine as long as they’re not pets.

U-Man, I’d read about that trick a while back and just got around to actually trying it when I took my oldest to Vegas a few months ago. My experience with it is that it works, but it’s in no way a substitute for a tripod or even monopod. It’ll give you (or at least gave me) another stop, maybe two at most.

linguine, we discussed it in the suggestion thread and if I remember correctly, I think we said that would be OK as long as it was a wild setting (e.g., no visible fences or barriers that would imply a farm or ranch).

Between the f/4 aperature (with the 1.4 TC) and IS, I’ve been surprised at the shots I’ve been able to get with that combo. I’m sure you’ve been to football games at night, so you know how horrible those shooting conditions are between the fast movement and the poor lighting. They’re even worse at jr high games as they play on the “B” fields which are usually more poorly lit still.

But, you’re looking at a not insignificant amount of change for that pair, so don’t go on just my recommendation. I rented from lensrentals.com to try it out before deciding to buy.

U-Man, I’ve also got the 70-200L f/2.8 IS and the 1.4 teleconverter and can vouch for what everyone’s said. It’s what I used for all of my youth football shots. You lose a stop with the 1.4x TC (2 with the 2x TC), but I never really found that to be a problem and it takes great shots. Of course, you’d have to decide if 280mm is enough zoom for your purposes.

I differ from aspidites in my percentage of use of it, though. I use my 24-70L f/2.8 as my normal walk-around lens and most of my non-football shots are with it.

It was scaredy-frog, U-Man. And you’re welcome, just glad I caught it before too many votes got cast.

Well, we’ve allowed lego representations in other threads, so as long as they’re “wild” animals, I’m of the mind to allow it, but I think it’ll have to be really creative to compete with the real things coming from the likes of aspidites. What say the rest of ye?

Copied from the first post for easier access here:

    Sep 30, 2011 – New Feature
Newb & LTNS tabs: There are two new tabs to welcome new entrants and welcome back those who haven’t entered in 6 months or more (long time no sees – LTNS). All contests have been updated with these lists. If the tab isn’t visible, then there are no entrants of that type for this contest.

The Newbs tab lists all entrants for whch this is their first contest.

The Kotters tab lists all entrants for which their most recent contest was 6 months or more ago. What’s a Kotter, you ask? It’s someone that we welcome back, of course (Wikipedia for reference for those who need it). Lame, I know. But I did solicit possible names for this group and got no feedback, so left to my own devices, lame is what you get. 😉

Ouch! I can identify in way, except replace Nikon with Sony for me. I was an early tech adopter and bought Sony CD players (back in ’84 when they weren’t $99), tape decks, camcorders, TVs, etc. Except for one tape deck, they all failed shortly after the warranty expired. After my Sony camcorder died on me in the middle of a family ski trip, I swore off Sony and haven’t purchased another of their products for years now.
