Seeing as I have no dogs in the Farkstronomy hunt (hard to do that when you can’t see the stars) I say push it back to early January when participation is up.

Seasons Greetings is always an easy one for regulars and sporadic posters, run it as usual.

You can, of course, ramp your ISO as high as it will go and use no no reduction to emulate this, though sensor noise and grain really look nothing alike IMO.

    Threadjack.

This is something that baffles me to this day, why do so many people think that grain looks like noise and viceversa? I’ve had some people tell me my B/W shots have lots of noise, they even get upset (and look at me as if I was crazy or joking) when I tell them that it’s grain what they are seeing.

    /Threadjack.

Because so many people don’t know what grain is, why it is or how it can be used artistically.

    I want to have props…

Gonna be sitting this out unless an actual UFO crosses my path tomorrow.

No ideas, no props… looking forward to the general weirdness Thursday

Yeah, I’m out as well, unless I find a really compelling streetlight tonight.

Standard f’graphy rules apply, but ‘in all their grainy goodness’ confusses me, then. I’m guessing that photoshop is of course out, but pp’g for ‘grain’ is in? Please explain, as you would to a child….

(I’m certain I haz 2 for this, though fuggin’ ST is back and posting on time will be iffy at best, for the next 4 months…why don’t we just get rid of ST and call DST the standard, anywayz?)

Traditionally, photos of these phenomena are enlarged significantly to show the “entity” or the “spaceship”

thus the cliche of the grainy image. You can, of course, ramp your ISO as high as it will go and use no no reduction to emulate this, though sensor noise and grain really look nothing alike IMO.

$5/ month for TF needs to go bye bye. The site needs more content open to the public. Although looking at Reddit’s numbers for the same time frame shows similarity. Maybe people are just getting sick of the internet?

With the notable exception of Total Fark Discussion, which is pretty much a certain group of Farkers, the whole site is open to the public. And there ain’t much but Circle Jerking going on in TFD. Sure, you might have to wait a while, but the doors open.

It’s just there is a plethora of choices out there, and Fark is in a certain way the “old Internet”. A lot of the Fark Regulars have been around for years, new people come and go, but a certain core remains. What makes Fark different is how big that core group is. There are a LOT of Farkers who’ve stayed around for a long, long time.

The slump in voting and participation is cyclical, it will bounce back.

I think QueenBee is probably the most affected other than ennuipoet. On FB she was the first to report power loss and hers isn’t back on yet but I didn’t see her say anything else dramatically terrible had happened.

It’s damn cold now though. I want my 80 degree October back!

Other than the lack of Mass Transit I am completely unphased by the storm. It’s surreal my neighborhood is back to normal, five miles away in Downtown Manhattan they are in the dark ages.

This is about the worst of the damage up here in West Harlem, downtown is a real mess but we are living the life up here. The Dominican folks in the neighborhood are walking around shrugging their shoulders and talking about the little breeze.

FWIW – every time the weather channel shows the areas under watch/warning, we’re smack in the middle of the red zone. Fortunately we’re far enough from the coast (3-400 miles?) that we’ll get some of the pain, but are not likely to lose house, life or limb. We also aren’t in a flood zone (the canal’s downhill from us, and where we are the cut for it is well over 30 feet down to water level).

ennuipoet – if they decide to issue a Katrina-like evacuation notice, I will be more than happy to host you… we can finally have that beer (I’ve still got my 2 growlers from the Anniversary road trip, not to mention most of a 12 of Honey Brown and some assorted other tasty treats.)

We probably won’t even lose days of work, but we are already making plans to decamp to the trailer if power goes out… the furnace will keep us warm enough, and the batteries will keep us relatively lit. A day off for shooting storm damage would be a nice gift, however…

If they evacuate my neighborhood it is the End of the World, I m on a bluff about sixty feet above the River. But, if the apocalypse does arrive, I will take you up on it! 😆

ennuipoet, two weekends ago I went to a shooting workshop outdoors and it was raining. A garbage bag with a hole in the end and rubber bands work surprisingly well.

It was good enough for Irene, it will be good enough for Sandy.

Speaking of Emergency Supplies, I need to hit the liquor store. I follow the New Orleans Model of Storm Preparation, drink until the wind stops, loot until the National Guard arrives.

I, for one, welcome our new Frankenstorm Overlords.

/Seriously, all I am doing is getting wet weather gear ready for the camera. Plastic bag and rubber band, high tech shiat!

/Live high above the water, in a city with underground powerlines.

I did daylight shots, super high FStop (my Sigma 24-70 goes to f32) and braced the camera against my chest and held my breath. I got some really cool “impressionist” shots, all color and no detail, but you can still recognize what they are. It’s definitely different yet still appealing.

I dawdled on this one, was pretty sure I wasn’t going to enter because taking blurry photographs was kind of the antithesis of what I attempt to do. Then I shot some stuff this afternoon and saw what Pope Larry was thinking, now I am much more enthused!

Awesome! I like the wedding photographer in theme! 😀 I keep pondering doing one of my Fall Festival Shoots (Medieval, Renaissance) in Steampunk Photographer attire. I think it is the thought of forking out for the view camera and toting around all day while drinking heavily that keeps me from doing it.
