ParticipantA lot depends on your needs as far as a crop sensor wide angle lens. The 70D “kit” is a 24-105 F4L, which is a stellar lens for all it is not a f2.8. If you find a deal with this lens, then get it.
I shoot very little true landscape, so when I need one I rent a 16-35mm.
There are some attractive Tamron and Tokina offerings which are very highly reviewed, and frankly for the price difference I would take them over the Canon offering in the wider lenses.
I strongly recommend not going the EFS route, and stick with EF mount, leaving you open to a Full Frame option in the future. Bodies come and go, lenses are forever.

ParticipantUnless the 70D goes back to more robust magnesium alloy body construction, I will stay with my 50D until I can afford a 5D. I figure why mess around, go FF and call it a day.
the 6D is out because of the Shutter Synch speed limits.

ParticipantElsinore, can you make sure I did not enable voting on this entry, as it would make four VE entries. (I couldn’t leave a branch out!)

I am pretty sure I didn’t but better safe than sorry.
You’re good to go!

ParticipantJust gonna say, this week, the dog photos get my votes.
lol so noted. Animal shots definitely seem to be doing well this week 🙂
I’ve never known a week when they didn’t. 😛
If we posted nothing but kittens, puppies, beer and boobies, our threads would be the hottest things on Fark.
If we could somehow work the Beer Looter into them, Fark would asplode.

Participant…so why was he so worried about things?
…Everything else is mental shenanigans.Be honest, how many of the photographers you know could shoot 20 rolls of film over 2 hours, toss them undeveloped into a bag, mail them to their employer and not mentally go through the undeveloped film’s journey in their minds?
I consider myself a photojournalist by practice if not by trade. I live in the field, if I don’t get it there I will never get it. I can’t fix it after it happened. A PhoJo runs their own film from camera to darkroom, and then gives it to the to the editors and graphics department. If I do my job in the field, I may be pissed because someone else screws it up, but I know that I did my job right.

ParticipantSo you’re saying we’re the new Garrison Keillor,.. I don’t want to live anymore.
Only as far as trying to tell a story in a single photograph!
Besides, you’re more a This American Life or… *defeated sigh*Leave me your camera stuff in your will and I’ll tell your friends and family a good story about why you killed yourself.
It can be done. Not by just anyone, but it can be done.
/not me certainly

ParticipantClearly someone doesn’t have a crippling anxiety disorder.
The guy is clearly a competent photographer, it’s too competitive to last 25 years without skill to back it up. All the world’s xanax couldn’t calm me down if I sent off undeveloped rolls of film that my job depended on, and would next see them in a magazine. That’s understandable in my book. And he explains how the phone camera is superior, in great detail, with the Leica comparison. Which is really funny, when you think about it, since they both use the popular video resolution (35mm then, 2mp now). Maybe in 100 years Apple will be the one making preposterously expensive fetish cameras.
He’s more than competent, he a GREAT photographer, so why was he so worried about things? I am not a GREAT photographer, but I know my gear, I know my lighting, I know my composition, and I know when I nailed a shot without chimping or post processing. If I did the bare minimum, set my exposure properly for the lighting conditions and compose the shot properly, then the shot I saw should be in the camera. Everything else is mental shenanigans.
Leica, Canon, iPhone, a good photo is a good photo no matter what took the image. I like to joke about phones, and I certainly don’t use one to shoot, but if I DO, then I know the photo is about my ability, my eye, not the machine.

ParticipantThe simple answer is people ALWAYS took shiatty shots, but they used to get tossed in a desk drawer forever not sepia filtered and called “art”.
Crappy photography is the rule, not the exception.

ParticipantAgreed. And it will speed things up, too.
This!

ParticipantI can tell you guys, I have spent all day answering emails and phone calls about these shots. I am working on a deal with a Photo Agency in the UK for licensing in Europe so I can make a few dollars.
I was maybe going to be the NBC Nightly News tonight, but it looks like I got bumped. Oh well.
This has been an amazing couple of days, all for pictures of old phones. While I haven’t made a dime, my name is all over the Internet in a good way rather than that unfortunate video me in the elf costume that one time..
and all of this goes my book as real work, so when people ask where have we seen your photos I can say Well…
and you can’t buy this kind of promotion.

ParticipantHeh, for all I sometimes grumble that I would like to be able to use more software in Farktography, I get a contest made for it and use all in-camera work. 😛
Also wik: Ravnostic, what did you use to shoot your eye shot? The detail is amazing!
ennuipoet
ParticipantI know 🙂 Drew and I talked some about Farktography back in Feburary, though we were both pretty drunk at the time 😆 That’s when he told me he was open to suggestions no matter how stupid they sounded. Need to shoot him an email, especially as I see more stats on how participating and voting is going with the week-ahead posting.
Speaking of which, are you guys liking/hating/completely apathetic about that? Would 2 weeks ahead work better/worse/who cares? IIRC, we have a Farktography group and/or page on FB, but I think soosh is the admin of it. Need to look into that.
I really like it, it makes posting easier and anecdotally, it looks like participation is up. I am definitely seeing names that are not “regulars”.

ParticipantWe used 500w Tungstens in each of the lamps, in 12″ reflectors. Naturally, I would prefer Strobes but…uh, yeah, those cost a LOT. Are you using reflectors to fill your faces, I had a silver 18″ reflector for fill light on hand, though I didn’t use it too much since the white floor of the background was doing the job for me.
I like the mat shots too, one of the problem with the others is the crop. I had to crop out lights and places where the background was to small which changes the composition. When the designer pulls the subject and puts it on a full white background that should compensate for the awkward crops.
