ParticipantAwesome, my sense of right and wrong in the Universe has been restored 😀

ParticipantI’ve an aesthetic question. Back when I was lad working in darkrooms, I shot in Medium format on an old Yashica TLR (god I wish I could remember which one so I could buy one), so the end results were square. Now, as I crop my images I find they look wrong with a border. So, I know that borders are usually out, any chance of being able to border for this contest?
This is what I mean here is a shot I cropped as a prospect without the borders

and now with

YMMV

ParticipantMy Argus, she’s got a hideous fungal infection, so shooting a roll through her probably not so much.
You know, it’s so old you could probably take the lens apart just by unscrewing it, then scrub the couple elements it has and put it back together easily enough.
I hadn’t thought about that…my mindset being all to modern where the idea of opening a lens is kind of like the thought of opening a puppy…except that I’m a Vet Tech and have been party to the opening of many a puppy, which is where that metaphor breaks down.

Her lens looks pretty good, so I am going to run a roll through her soon. Hopefully in time for the “Square” contest.

Participantedited to add:
Y’all really need to click on olavf’s blurred shot; it’s quite powerful when you can see it.
Having seen it, I totally agree. It’s an excellent piece of portraiture.
Add my Keanu like “Whoa” to that, most excellent.
Kestrana: I really liked the coffee cup shot, it was beautifully lit and subtly sad.

ParticipantMy god, you people are good. I’ve worn out my finger voting for you. Well done, everyone! Some of the later entries really brought their “A” Game, particularly Bowen-Photo and I loved Mopsy‘s garden shed!

ParticipantThanks to ennuipoet for the assistance…
I’m kinda torn here. I like my pics, but they’re pretty light on the ‘HDR effect.’ Then you can say ‘Well the best ones are more realistic looking’ but then how do you really know that there was any effect applied? I dunno… throw it up there and hope it sticks.

Your welcome (unless you get more votes than me! 😛 ) The thing with HDR is how relative it all is. I was 100% with Curious about the fake/overdone look until I started playing with it. HDR Photography is just a method to capture the full dynamic range of a scene, the “HDR Look” is merely a matter of preference. FWIW, I loved the Skyline and the Signs, and will be voting for both.
Here’s a link to my HDR set on Flickr, for those interested.

ParticipantIf you wish to get all weepy at how GOOD HDR can be http://www.stuckincustoms.com/hdr-camera/. This fellow is an acknowledge Master of the Craft and his work really peaked my interest in what can be done with HDR.

ParticipantIn the Photomatix Box for Generating HDR Image make sure that you are selecting the noise reduction options, reduce chromatic aberrations, attempt to reduce ghosting artifacts–depending on what kind of image you are shooting select either background movements (trees, traffic, water) or moving objects (people, animals, singular quick things) Finally in the image alignment, I find that picking “align by matching features” to somewhat more intuitive than vertical horizontal shifts.
When you are choosing files to work with, particularly if you are working with images with a lot of tonal adjustments prior to export, it will change the tonemapping. Use files unaltered from either the scan or the RAW, I use Lightroom with a General Punch Setting as my default. I reset to unedited RAW before I export to Photomatix. I’ve had the the software choke on heavily edited images. Once you’ve tonemapped, THEN go back and adjust your levels/colors/contrasts ect.
Finally, there are just some images that will not work. Even if you have used a tripod, tried all sorts of software tricks, something about them just will not come out of the process looking right. I usually see these in the photos with a lot of small bright objects of brilliant colors, like Christmas lights. The software just chokes on them.

I believe the $20.00 I spent to get in the Met is the most I’ve ever spent on a Farktography shoot.

ParticipantElsinore, might have gotten a little to chatty defending my note taking skills in the thread. Feel free to delete as needed, otherwise it will be a free for all for the armor nerds. I love Fark, where else could there be a free for all for armor nerds?

ParticipantNBD or others…. I’m trying Photomatix pro 3.2, very easy to use and I love the result of the effect, but… All of my shots seem to be generating sort of a radial blur that intensifies from the center out. Any idea on what might be causing this? All of my slides are shot on a tripod, and if I stack em in photoshop they line up just fine. I have tried using and not using the option to align pictures when creating the HDR, but don’t seem to notice a difference.
Hope that makes sense…. kinda bummed 🙁
Are you using the image aligning in the software?

ParticipantHeh. While you’re tooling over there, wanna pick me up some C-41 and E-6 Chemistry? They won’t mail it to me and I haven’t been able to make it back down to the city since I started developing. Plus, it doesn’t look like I’ll get there anytime soon, either.
Seriously, if you wanna work something out, I can pick it up, pack it and ship it out. Email me (my user name)@gmail. Shoot, any excuse to go in there and buy something, not just stand around and drool…they hate that.

ParticipantOnce she arrives I’ll tool over to B-n-H or Adorama and pick up some film. (Oh, I love going to BH, it is so much better than church). I really don’t expect the camera to be great, I basically bought it because I thought it would look good on the shelf. If it works though, I think I might enjoy shooting with her. Thanks, I’ll keep you posted on how it goes, scan the pics and such.

Participantok it’s nitpicking time 🙂
if your subject is truly bad ass why would it need explaining?
I was going to ask that…but I didn’t want to be the one nitpicking:)
