Hey, that’s a good idea, ennui!!

There is a slight, infinitesimal, minuscule, possibility that my dislike of Stock Photo sites is because I was not accepted to any of the ones I researched thoroughly and submitted my work to.

    😛

The best thing I can tell you look at the top selling submissions on Stock sites and base your selection on that. You can make some educated guesses for your portfolios based on those.

I’ve read about Stocksy and how it hopes to change the way Stock Photography is marketed and pays it’s contributors. It’s a great idea, but doomed to fail. It is going against a Getty and they have the money and the market, the consumer has not impetus to move to another company where they would pay more for the exact same product.

Also, keep in mind what you are giving up by contributing to a microstock agency, read your contributors contract to make sure you retain control over your work.

Miscrostock is a loser for a small artist. You might pick a up a few bucks here and there if you are lucky, but essentially there is no money unless you find a niche and exploit it aggressively. Still life photos are done and over, they market is Biblical Flood saturated with flowers, sunsets and puppies, what remains is people and that requires model releases. Also, the standard “good looking man in business suit” is done to death, you need “Transvestite tattooed biker in business suit standing in desert with atomic bomb exploding the background” stock shots.

Finally, the founder of Stocky sold istockphoto to Getty for a huge profit for himself and screwed over the photographers who contributed. Are you sure you want to trust this guy?

Congrats bender16v on the sweep of individual and combined. Excellent showing!

Speaking of excellent showings, this is our highest voted contest since Birds 2 back in June of last year! Now if we could only figure out a way to keep those voters coming back each week…

Easy, do contest where any schmuck with a camerphone can enter.

/err, that came out meaner than I meant

No longer working at a animal hospital has REALLY curtailed my cute animal options for photography.

. . . but a performance shooter has a responsibility to capture their subject in the best light (no pun intended) so I try very hard not to shoot the “O” face all performers get.

I was fortunate enough to have been at the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls a couple years ago when it was being re-dedicated. I was playing photojournalist, and there’s a couple painful shots in the set. One is of a congresswoman who I disagree with on almost everything. It looks like her face can’t decide which direction to slide off her skull. I have no plans to let it into the wild, but it’s always good for a laugh on a slow archive dive day.

(The Wesleyan Chapel is where the first Womens’ Rights Convention was held. They wrote the Declaration of Sentiments and was possibly the first place where women publicly declared a desire for suffrage. It’s now a National Park, and is a short walk from the National Womens’ Hall of Fame.)

I follow the Hippocratic Oath when it comes to photography: First, do no harm. Unless there is a compelling reason I will never release a photo showing my subject in an unflattering light. And the compelling reason cannot be “I get a paid a lot of money”

MAYBE if I were paid a shit load of money…

Oddly enough, I am just in from shooting a comedy show. Now it is a MUCH slower pace than the Super Bowl halftime show, but a performance shooter has a responsibility to capture their subject in the best light (no pun intended) so I try very hard not to shoot the “O” face all performers get.

That being said, it happens. It is the Editing which insures those photos never see the light of day. In this case the Photo Editor at Getty must either be new, or just really hate Beyonce. The photographer was probably rapid firing shots but the Photo Editor is to blame. These shots should only be passed around the office for other photogs to laugh at.

So uh…are naughty words spelled out in neon signs verboten on Fark?

It depends on how big the word is and what it is. Unless it huge and graphic then it should be fine.

Funny how I just went out tonight and shot all the old-school hotels with neon that exist within 30 miles of me (turns out there’s about 15 East, and only one I could find west and I could use a b-side from Vertical Landscapes for that one)? Yet I’ll probably pick the hippiecentric ones from the downtown college-centered area. I’ll have to see what worked in the original then decide whether old school or new look to have the better odds…

I was looking at your shots over on FB and I am kinda pissed. I live in NYC, the one time Neon Capital of the World and now everything is LED and LCD. Down in AZ you have beautiful neon all over the place!

We’re fortunate to have an artisan still in business who makes fantastic neon, trained by a true master. He does brisk business and Mesa, Tempe, and Scottsdale have lots of his work in their windows and on their buildings.

    can I get an OBO?

    Got it.

So to clarify, gas filled tubes with high voltage applied from one end to the other causing a cascading internal plasma discharge are not a requirement,… we can also use things that are “neon” colored?

The way I read it is ONLY actual neon, no bright colors. I imagine LED/LCD signage would fit the spirit of the theme, but they are an abomination in the sight of the gods.

    Yeah saw that 😛

Thanks, I’ll take criticism from anyone who participates, but random jackasses who wander through piss me off.

ETA: I specifically chose that shot from many because it was neither overtly sentimental or maudlin…it used to be there, now it isn’t.

Hmmm, I think I may use Topaz Simplify for this theme

It’s got some awesome effects and easier than PShop.

I wouldn’t BUY it for this theme, but there is a 30 day trial for free

or, you know, you could do…other things….to get it.
