ParticipantI fully intend to side market myself, even if they don’t condone it. I will just be discrete.
Actually, I am mostly joking. A lot of artists do commercial work to pay the bills and then spend their own time on personal projects. That is what I will do. But, I am not kidding the work has no soul 🙂

ParticipantMy sister asked me to take some engagement / save the date photos for her and her fiance this weekend. She understands that I’m not a portrait shooter but she’s looking for something fairly candid so hopefully I’ll come away with something she’s satisfied with.
Basically the plan is a late morning trip to the Arboretum on Sunday, forecast is a bit breezy but not too bad, partly cloudy so hopefully the shadows won’t be too harsh. My 50mm f14 and 28mm f1.8 on my XSi should be all the lens I need, and have my speedlite for some fill flash if I need to fight some shadow. Anything major I’m not thinking of?
Errh, bad time to shoot, but you can fix it. First, your crop sensor XSi and the 50mm is the best combination. Shoot in RAW. What Speedlight do you have? If you can adjust your SL for Zoom and Intensity, you can work with it, if you can’t buy a cheap reflector and use it with natural light. ( http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=581151011 ).
If you can get the flash off camera, then do it, even an extension cable will make a world of difference.

None of these reactions are entirely feigned as I was actually getting angry with the “news” I was hearing while shooting.
You didn’t have it on mute?!
I am not a very good actor, I needed to suffer for authenticity. 😀

ParticipantAll three of my entries shot specifically for this theme? That’s unpossible!

ParticipantSo do the things we shoot have to be ours, or do old buildings and/or cars work as well?
It’s not like we don’t have antiques, I just have to decide what to shoot and how… access to my archives would give me more flexibility.
The way I envisioned it is you should own or use the object, or at least have use of it regularly. Old cars fit, buildings not so much, unless it was like a workshop or something along those lines.

ParticipantGratzies to both of you. Glad to see some positive news for good people.
Crap, please note that I am NOT trying to steal any Kes’ limelight, just commenting!

Participant//2 cents
I am in favor of anything that allows and encourages more participation and thus more voting.
I realize some people get very competitive about Farktography and work hard at developing their own ideas. You wind up feeling very possessive of your work. That’s only natural but: no one has an exclusive license on photographing anything (staplers for instance). If we allow early posting, someone might rip off your shot. I’ve noticed the Photoshoppers are really good about offering to delete entries that wind up unintentionally parroting someone else’s prior post. I think most Farkers would show the same courtesy for Farktography, and if the posters don’t self police, the voters will. You’re influenced already by everything you see and hear and everything you put out in this digital space influences others, so I don’t know what kind of purity we’re supposed to enforce by limiting the amount of time we have to post.
As for me, since I don’t have regular internet access and frankly I’m not driving 40 miles every Wednesday night to find a Starbucks with wifi (like I’m posting from right now), if the thread was open for posts right now for the next two contests, I’d be posting entries in them.

While I cannot speak for all the Photoshoppers, I can speak as one. There is a code of courtesy that prevails and people who do not follow tend not to last long on Fark. Even if someone does violate the rules, the Moderators have always been quick to respond and correct the situation. Since we have a Mod on staff, as it were, we can assume the issue of ripping off ideas will be dealt with in a timely and professional manner. 🙂

ParticipantW00t11ty! Nicely done.
I just made a sale to a magazine, I think I might get a cover out of it.
Admittedly, it is not a magazine anyone will ever read but sit on a table in a reception area.

ParticipantI don’t want to sound like a stodgy old stick in the mud…
I guess I’m just old school at this point, but can we get back to keeping the ‘tography in farktography? Please? It’s funny, three years ago I would’ve jumped on the Photography as Art Bandwagon and completely disagreed with you. (Not that I have anything against any of the images in THIS theme, I read it as the barn door was open and all the horses run free.) Now days, being well past the HDR phase and mightily tired of pushing pixels around in general, I agree with the sentiment. I’m tired of Filters, tired of over processed and under inspired dren (again NOT talking about ANYONE in the theme, but the current state of photography) which passes for the “Art” of photography these days. Doesn’t anyone just compose a farking picture anymore? Do we have to modulate, manipulate and masticate an image for people to farking like it? There is no craftsmanship, it’s all showmanship.
A very few people have both going for them, those that do stand out. Those that don’t, show up like a turd on a dinner plate. Now, if you will all excuse me, I have something I need to be doing right now:

Anyone know what the deal with this fake farktography thread is? I thought it was a joke, but it popped up again tonight:
http://www.fark.com/comments/7629624/I don’t know if you spend a lot of time in TFD* (Total Fark Discussion for you Liters) but what goes in there stays in there 🙂 Kind of like Vegas, or Fight Club. Looking at those shots, Farktography is in no danger of immediate competition.
The Amazon Gift Card would be nice, though.
*I’ve spent just enough time there to know how weird they are. I used to work overnights from time to time and TFD was a major source of entertainment.

ParticipantTell the truth, I would like to be able to post day of rather than hour of. I also don’t think having the theme open for submission a la Photoshop threads would change the voting results as our threads tend to go for talent rather than kitsch. Finally, having the theme in the Contest Q would encourage others who might not see the theme on Wednesday nights to participate.
I guess what I am really saying is

Elsinore, they bought their Total Fark, they knew what they were getting in to. I say let ’em post!ennuipoet
ParticipantThis week will be “Fun With Stacking” for me, and yet not a single Astrophotography shot will be seen.

ParticipantI read it about in a full article on Salon:
http://www.salon.com/2013/03/01/dont_blame_the_victim_or_the_photographer/
When I was a cop, domestic violence was always the call I hated the most. Aside from the very real danger to the responding officers, it was the feeling of being unable to help the people involved. I could arrest the abuse, and I did, but I could never make the parties see the truth that this would never be a one time thing, it would happen again and continue happening until someone left. Either through incarceration, permanent separation or death. The sad thing is, 25 years later the problem hasn’t changed in the least.

ParticipantI was more interested in the vitriol that spilled out from the ignorant masses castigating the photographer for “profiting” on this woman’s misery. This country is now so benightedly stupid it cannot fathom the role of the press, the ideals of journalistic credibility and editorial distance. The photographer did EXACTLY what she was supposed to do, document, report to the authorities and resume documenting. These photographs grind the horror of domestic violence and poverty in the face of America, reminding us of our failures when comes to treating people with decency and compassion. The shine a light on the darkness that dwells in the millions of American homes and all the cretinous masses can do is point their fingers at the messenger and catcall.
To quote an esteemed scientist, I don’t want to live on this planet any more.
