ParticipantCurious: People agreed to that change several pages back in the thread. This was my fault for not adding it long before now. And obviously if we move to posting the threads a week or two out, we’d have to make sure that doesn’t happen. Tonight’s change was the first late change like this we’ve happened in I can’t remember how long…
As for posting the links but not making them clickable/not allowed to post in them, I think that wouldn’t be possible without coding changes.
What about clickable links to farktography? (see above comment)

ParticipantDamn Yugoboy, great minds and timing, etc.

ParticipantOk, let me also mention that this came up because people have asked on Fark why Farktography contests aren’t on the Contest Tab. So there may actually be a subset of people who follow that tab enough that they would participate more if it were available on Fark.
So is there anyway to have the Contest Tab operate as a link into farktography.net’s page specific to that contest? Kind of a replication of the “Upcoming Events” just to the left on these pages. That way there’s no scheduling changes but people can see what’s coming up and how to participate.

ParticipantHere’s my $2e-2,…
For the non-regular farktographers out there, LGT always goes to next week’s contest rules right? So there’s plenty of advance notice. Also the long duration of a contest basically affords the same window of opportunity for irregulars, albeit “ex post facto” (pun more than intended). So it seems that the root question is this: Will expanding that window to include pre-contest time bring in more regulars? I’m thinking no. If you’re serious about it, you’re here or you make your way here.
I would like to see more participation also and am as active as I can be to draw people in where the opportunity presents itself, but I don’t think this will do it. That’s like, just my opinion man.
To sum, put me down for status quo.
Also, this:

There’s too much creativity and talent out there to be giving anyone else ideas and letting them know what they’re up against too far ahead of time! After the contest starts, I’m all about sharing ideas and techniques, but before then, it’s dog-eat-dog, every-man/woman-for-himself/herself!fluffybunny
ParticipantAs long as they’re both your photos, I think it’s your choice of what to use for a background, Yugoboy.
I just finished my first entry last night. ‘Twas a lot of work, but I’m pretty happy with the result. Now, onto the next…
I finished my three last week, part of the reason I didn’t play in “Lakes and Ponds”. I think I have some pretty unique stuff, but then again I have thought that in the past and been completely wrong. It’s what makes for an adventure!

ParticipantGlad you’re OK. Ya’ll get more snow out there than we do but 19″ is a lot for anywhere, let alone Texas. Looking forwards to your wonderland photos.

ParticipantCongrats to BecauseISaidSo this week! Very well played 😉 I’ve been wondering how you got the message to read that on the printer? Did you have to hack it?
Thanks Els! After the shocker bombed, I wasn’t sure how this one would play, but I guess it’s a little more specific to the theme.
Thanks also to everyone who voted. And congrats to fluffybunny on his combined win – a strong showing indeed.
As for the printer message, the status message on older HP printers (printers that use PCL – Printer Control Language) is programmable. So if you know the right PCL command, creating a program to set the status to whatever you want (as long as it’s 16 characters or less) is pretty simple.
When I first wrote the program a few years ago, I set the status to “FEED ME A CAT” and then waited to see how long it’d take until one of the kids noticed it. 🙂 I later changed it to “INSERT QUARTER” and tried to make some coin off of their homework, but the cheapskates never paid.
A note about that printer – that’s an HP Laserjet 4 Plus that I’ve had since the early-to-mid nineties. I put a new toner cartridge in it once a year and it just keeps going. I don’t think they make ’em like that anymore.
Thanks CISS.
Had me a HPLJ 4mp until about a year ago. It quit electronically, not worth fixing so I sacrificed it for the “Noir” / darkside contest. Awesome printer for many years (1995 maybe?).

There are some versions from that shoot with little pieces flying about in the frame. Not sure Why I didn’t use one of them.

ParticipantNot that it’s relevant to flowers but my understanding about stock companies is that they want model releases. If ya’ll remember, I asked about them quite some time ago. I’ve studied them off and on since. For me, the conclusion I came to was this:
I am not going to make photographs for advertising or stock companies unless approached by one. If I am shooting for me, I can sell my work as art and I don’t need releases. It might explain some of the rejection you’re seeing. No existing releases for past work.

ParticipantJust to confirm, we good with cut and paste as long as the source images are our own, yes?

ParticipantMy own theme and I’ve got nothin (still) to post. Won’t start with the reasons, but enjoying what has been submitted (and voted for plenty of em).
Been there many times. Life gets in the way. Don’t let it stop you though.

ParticipantThanks for the OBO, fluffybunny!!
De nada, anytime.

ParticipantI’d love to photograph some of the ancient screw machines in the plant where I’m working
My Uncle was a partner in a screw machine plant for all of his adult life. Must have had 50 or more going at once. Awesome place for a mechanically minded kid.

ParticipantThis is great news. I haven’t been keeping up with their progress but it did seem kind of stagnant. I have a linux box but most of the time I’m on a M$ machine, wingimp is always a little behind so that accounts for some of that perception.
fluffybunny
ParticipantI guess none of us have office jobs?
Glad that I don’t, that will suck the life out of you.
fluffybunny
ParticipantSo,… crickets?
How did I get the first six posts?
