ParticipantYou didn’t list wireless triggers per se, but if you’re going off axis with the flash they make life easier and open up significant creativity.
I’ve got Cactus v5’s ( http://mpex.com/cactus-v5-radio-slave-set.html ) and am quite more happy with them.
I tried the cheap ebay triggers but found them to be too unreliable, these are a little more expensive ($32 ea vs 10-20$ ea) but much better than the one’s I started with.

ParticipantI take it that Fark.com is not keen on sharing anonymous voter data related to Farktography in some behind the scenes data conduit? [photo_id][random_voter_id][vote_state_or_count]
fluffybunny
ParticipantThat’s an interesting idea, fluffybunny, but it couldn’t be implemented except at Fark itself. Our view of the contest pages doesn’t allow us to know if a single user has voted for the same entry as both Funny and Best. For example, if an entry shows up on both Best and Funny voting results pages with 1 vote, we can’t know if that’s the same voter or two different voters.
Gah, foiled again by that super genius I know only as the mysterious “Drew”.

ParticipantOne option I’m not sure anyone has floated yet: don’t distinguish between vote types. So for you programmer types that would be “best | funny”, Boolean types “best OR funny” and then in English “If neither then 0 votes, if either or both then 1 vote”. This is the closest to mimicking the old system as we can get (IMHO).
As an a priori voter, you would just plop down a vote if you thought it was funny OR good, you didn’t really distinguish. Logical OR would do the same. It would also eliminate the categorical bias that’s already been discussed, ie no difference or weighting for one category over the other. If either or both votes are cast for a photo, there is only one resulting vote tallied.
There would still be the Fark area separating the two vote tallies, so if a voter only checked there for results they might be confused about contest progress or outcome. This is the only incongruity I can think of for the moment.

ParticipantSanta brought me a membership to the Jelly of the Month Club.
But seriously, that 10-22 f3.5-4.5 I’ve been pining for.

ParticipantDon’t forget “funny” can mean not haha funny, as in odd or strange.

ParticipantYes, I won’t need an OBO after all fluffybunny we’ll be staying in tonight. Thanks though!
Any time. If Orionid is working twelves I can certainly empathize with not wanting to party. They kinda take the wind out of you.

ParticipantJust my luck, a few months ago I cleaned out my contest folders, leaving only the ones I actually entered. Serves me right for trying to organize something.
I have a Triptych that has one different panel out of the three than the one that was entered. Would that qualify?
Obviously the “qualify” question is up to mopsy and NoBigDeal and possibly Elsinore, but one of my entries this week was going to be a panel from a tiptych that I did not use, but I changed my mind in favor of another b-side from another contest. So now I have a b-side from a b-side contest. When does that contest come around? Every hundred years?

ParticipantI’m going to need an OBO tonight. orionid probably will need one too. Let me know and I’ll PM you the codes (once I decide what I’m submitting heh heh)
I can cover ya’ll this evening if you like. Never done it before so unsure of the procedures and protocols, don’t assume I know what I am doing.

ParticipantFor those of us who are Canonites and specifically 7d users (may apply to other mfgs and models also), here’s the setup I was referring to:
http://www.deepgreenphotography.com/2009/12/setting-up-your-new-canon-7d/
Basically, the 7d user can pick what certain buttons do in software so in the article, he assigns AF start to the ‘*’ button just behind the shutter button. In servo mode, this give the ability to lock or vary focus as needed quickly “on the fly” (pun certainly intended) independent of exposure (if in auto) or shutter actuation. I thought it might take me a while to get the hang of it but I latched on to it pretty quickly.
There are some other useful settings in the article, but that was the most important for me.
For all i know, everyone here operates this way and I am once again “discovering” something.
/Europeans “discovering” America.
//Americans “discovering” Yellowstone.

ParticipantI would vote for “ignore Funny votes altogether” but that gives us at least two outcomes:
1) Don’t tell prospective voters, hilarity ensues, profit.
2) Mention the policy in the contest headline and come off as arrogant (We care not for Funny, etc).Since I know next to nothing about the relationship between Fark and Farktography, I have to ask “Why can there not be a template on Fark for our contests that only has one button?”
fluffybunny
ParticipantI think pressing the Funny vote button should take the user on this Magical Journey:

ParticipantI like the orange background heron. Keep that up and you’ll be giving aspidites a run for his money. Shallow DOF with eye in perfect focus, the hallmark of a good bird photo. I changed my focusing techniques based on a bird photographer’s setup and have never looked back, although since the change have not had a lot of bird opportunities.
