Participantwow! this is gonna be an awesome thread!

Participantalso, don’t know if gimp has dodge and burn tools i think you could get better results using them – maybe on a separate layer?

Participanti’m just going to copy/paste some tips from a pal who does a lot of concert shooting:
yep, ISO max, try setting exposure +.7 (ymmv), and do brackets of +1/N/-1 (or .7 etc). Usually 1 out of the 3 will be sharp, and the overexposed might have something cool looking. Big memory card! Best to not be watching how full your card is; a 1GB always lasts a full set.
Stage Lights. Watch for cycles & wait for the bright yellows or colors that look good & intense. Proximity can help even if lighting’s mellow. Use the stage/monitors to stabilize. I don’t use ‘image stabilization’ in the camera.
If you know the music (and so does the lighting guy), or get a feel for it, be ready at dramatic peaks for brights. End of song* is usually primetime visually. Standing to the side of a performer often gives bonus light reflecting off guitars/bald heads 😉
Plus that avoids clown-nose microphone shots. Singers stay close on the mic usually, so to get their mouths/smiles wait for that breath between verses. I know faces are important, but I usually use the ‘grid’ of a guitar’s fretboard as a sharp focusing point, hold & adjust my framing. A microphone’s screen is usally good for focusing as well, but then people move…
You can also do alot post-shoot. Cropping, re-sizing (especially if just for the web). Also grainy shots – just bring the gamma down. If the subject starts to disappear bright/contrast should work at that point, but usually shots turn nice & moody.
I do the rear-sync & slow flash when I’m desperate for light, or the lights are so crazy I know I’ll get something good & trippy with a frozen subject. If the flash washes out faces I’ve started de-saturating the whole pic about 70-80%: it ends up mostly black & white, with the super-saturated colors remaining as soft tints.

Participantthanks zeke, that sounds great.
it’s gonna be triumph of hope over experience, considering the number of times this little package may have been xrayed in it’s travels (crossing fingers)
also just noticed on on of the pix i snapped before sending, there’s a shelf life, it says develop before 05/07 – dunno aboot film, how hardy it is?

Participanthi folks, there are 27 exposures on the farkamera, what number are we up to now? definitely in favour of starting another if we’re getting close to filling number 1
the idea was to have the last person to take their shot, have the film developed and upload (do kodak provide a cd with jpgs? i hope..) to a gallery on the farktography website, that we create for that purpose. anyone can link to the “Farkamera Project” gallery but i think it best reside on the main farktog website as it’s a group project.
i’m writing from the land of dial-up so am s-l-o-w and behind the toimes
question for zeke: can we make a “Farkamera Project” menu item (or something similar) when the time comes, to hold a gallery of the pix, and any anecdotes and so on?
cheers & happy holidays y’all!

Participantthanks for posting the pix Snug Tight! i’m just tickled pink that this project is proceeding apace (where’s my smiley?) oh yeah :o)

Participantthanks swampa, i’ll give that a try

Participantjust to clarify mikemikeb, it was a group decsion, by the mods & the technical folks who will be working on the website, to move the thread in question to the “Site Redesign” section of the forum. there will be opportunity for more input as it is still in progress.
i looked after updating the website until health concerns made it clear that i couldn’t give farktography the attention it deserved. i asked veruca if she would be willing to take over. she graciously agreed & and has done a fine job. no one could have predicted this latest upset. for the most part, decisions are made by consensus, after much discussion.

Participanti’ve no idea what you’re talking about captain jim. (insert pancake bunny)
the contest themes are the ones suggested by farktographers
how the themes are handled/interpreted/expressed is a very personal matter. none of us are judges here, we’re simply voters.
you’re free to submit as many as you wish with full description for inclusion in the queue
the original intention of farktography was to have fun and to share. that hasn’t changed. of course there is a variety of skill and committment level. you are one whose work i’ve always admired and respected. this is not sucking up (believe me!) just saying, don’t expect everyone to share your values
some people may outgrow farktography and move on to professional contests, but it’s my hope that farktography will always be aboot teh fun, first and foremost

Participanti take it to mean it should scream: Andre Kertesz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ansel Adams, Cindy Sherman, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, or any of a 100 or so others

Participanti’ve built hundreds of websites, and worked with a variety of content management systems, esp in php/mysql. i could set something up for you guys pretty quickly. i love design and photography, and it looks like you guys could use a hand. hosting it would be pretty easy for me as well, but it would appear that you guys already have a good hosting situation.
btw, i’m the fellow who designed the farktography icon used on fark, for whatever thats worth.
you’re right, we sure could use a hand, veruca is working on a solution right now. maybe contact her? see what she needs?
thanks so much!
