I occasionally go all OCD about the various stats of the FSM. So I, too, add my thanks, Schnee.

This is my first “good” contest in weeks. I definitely have those weeks where I don’t make my average… what I mean by that is that I am primarily competing against myself. It feels great when I get a top 10, but it happens very very rarely. I stick with farktography through the bad weeks because it pushes me to learn and focuses my attention and makes me think about my photography every week, even if I’m not feeling all that great – mentally or physically. I also treasure the company of my peers (and my betters 😉 ); they, too, help me learn.

But really, the votes aren’t an absolute indicator of the value of your work. And gosh, voters! You really can’t tell how they’re going to roll on any given picture. Like I said last week: can’t live with ’em, can’t shoot ’em or there’d be NO votes! 😛

Please none of you get discouraged. When I suggested to my daughter that my profile graph looked like a rollercoaster, she said “A fun rollercoaster, mama!” *facepalm* And it still looks like that, even if the lows are usually not as low as they were when I started out. Usually. 😯

One thing that helped me once (or more, I’m not sure) was selecting a picture that I thought should do well but didn’t, and ask here for constructive criticism. I got a LOT of reasons why the picture wasn’t doing as well as I’d hoped and it was very educational. And I know everybody here isn’t going to be mean; they really want to help! I wouldn’t bother y’all with that sort of thing often, but when I have it’s been very rewarding. *squishes all my farktography buddies in a huge hug* <3

Besides, we like y’all! Don’t leave us, please!

Wow…Not one vote yet for any of my entries.

    Are they really that bad?

Dude, I’ve been there. I haven’t voted yet, but I actually try not to look at the farktographers’ names until after I’ve voted. Considering your track record, I highly doubt your pix are “that bad”. 🙂

I had three shots, all new, but I thought ‘what the hell, i’ll look at my archives’, and came up with two more. =

I ended up deciding to use two of the new ones and one older one. I’ve got absolutely no feel for how I’m going to do in the contest.

    edited to add:

Y’all really need to click on olavf’s blurred shot; it’s quite powerful when you can see it.

Mopsy – *blush* thank you for your compliment. My own 2 cents on my pix… I expected the mountains to do best; the larger version is pretty nifty. But I expected the man going through the trash to have a good deal of appeal to the voters — though obviously I don’t know what they want lol — based on how some similar pictures (by other people) have done in the past. *shrug* I dunno. All I know is that I want to at the very least maintain (better yet, improve) my all-time average votes/entry… and I’m just barely going to make it this week … if I do at all.

Also — and there’s no reason you should have been tracking this — the trash guy was doing the worst by far, but has now passed my pic of the capitol. Weird. I mean, not weird that it’s getting votes lol; weird that it came from so far behind.

Voters… can’t live with ’em, can’t kill ’em or we’d get no votes. 😛

I hate when people post “There’s too many good pictures so I’m not voting.” Vote for all of them silly people!

Yeah – vote! We need validation!!! 😛

Mopsy – I like your shed too, and will be voting for it on Saturday. 😉

Huh I thought my pix would be doing better. But then… voting has been so low lately. If you look at the numbers on the Top Ten Vote Getters recently, U-Man is down like 200 votes from his usual. And 10th place had to be above 400 not so long ago, whereas when the contest started 10th was like 339 or something.

    I’m rationalizing real purty, ain’t I?

Much like with tilt-shift, I went a bit overboard in picking pix… I’m going to end up with 6 b-sides… and I’m still not entirely sure which three that means I’m going to use. 😯

Clouddancer – what I’ve been doing is taking my raw pix and setting the exposure levels to 5 different levels, exporting those to jpg, then running them through qtpfsgui. That way I could go archive diving — I had the same problem you did: what the heck to photograph for this! — and also means that I don’t have to worry about my images aligning, because they are all the same image.

I’m probably not going to use this one

    http://65.78.140.207/TFK/farktography/processed_0416.jpg

but it shows an example of something that would be virtually impossible to do with multiple shots (because of the nature of the subject (aka kids lol)).
