Participanti have 4×5 speed graphic with a 6×9 roll film back. yeah i mixed inches and CM there 🙂 anyway it was fun to use but real slow to use. also have a rolleiflex tlr with built in match needle meter. since getting the film processed is a pain i haven’t used it in years.
if you have a few thousand dollars laying around here’s a modern version.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/303163-USA/Rollei_66607_Rolleiflex_4_0_FW_Medium.html#specificationsthat price just HAS to be wrong. the damn thing isn’t gold plated.
I was thinking of getting a Yashica, if I can find a decent one secondhand. They tend to be cheaper than Rolleiflex here. I also found a Mamiya RB67 with 90mm and 180mm lenses and other bits and pieces (incl. two film backs) for about $600 all in.
However, the problem is how often will I use it, where will I use it (heavy), and can I scan in the negatives to my computer like I can with 35mm? The answer to the first is “probably not right often”, the second is “landscapes (but I need to sort out my Japanese driving license first), and for the last question I am pretty sure the answer is “no”.
I checked at my local camera store, and the cost for developing a reel of 120 at least was about $7. Not sure about prices in the States, but that didn’t strike me as too bad.

Participantwell being a film trained photographer and a master of my craft i shot 19 images of three bugs to get shots for this week.
As I transition back to film in medium format, I find myself obsessing over tiny details when composing shots. I’ve actually found myself arranging flowers on the bush for compositions. The thought of trying to shoot this theme on film gives me the heebie jeebies! 🙂
May I ask what you use for shooting medium format? I love using film (though for this competition, the advantages of digital are manifest, as people have said), and I am thinking of getting a medium format. If you have any advice, pointers, dos/donts, I would be grateful.

ParticipantMade me go back and see when I first posted in a competition. Due to timezones and work, I stopped posting entries for about 3 years.
Sadly, judging by votes earned, I don’t seem to have gotten any better in that time.I was always happy to just get some votes at all. I think I had one very good showing and it really made my day. And it was, technically speaking, a really low quality photo.
I think early on I was spoilt because one entry, of a bridge, did pretty well, something which I wasn’t expecting. Then I was brought back down to reality with a bump…
Something I remember about one of the early comps was Drew’s Mother coming in to say that she loved farktography, and she thought it was one of the best things “Andrew” had done with the site.
That’s how I learnt that “Drew” was short for Andrew./I had previously thought it was just one of those weird names they have in America 😉

ParticipantAnd this contest made me realise that most of the stuff I did as I kid I no longer do now. As for stuff I still have, it’s all on the other side of the world.
So yes, I am officially a boring old fart. Thanks, Farktography, for making me realise that! 🙁LeicaLens
ParticipantIn my mind U-Man stole a police car, was powersliding on grass past his tripod while tossing out Molotov cocktails so he’d have some fire to slide through when the cops showed up. Then the cops get in close and see it’s U-Man and the grizzled older cop explains to his baby-faced partner that they can’t arrest him, “he’s too damn good”.
Also, in my mind, Mrs. U-Man only patiently chides him “stealing police cars and setting the park on fire again honey? Aren’t you a little old for that” when he gets home. But U-Man‘s all like “That’s the point!” then he chugs a half gallon of cask-strength rye whiskey and his camera straight out bites a rottweiler in the face and then he jumps into a hole in the wall and goes to sleep, or so we’re left to assume BECAUSE WE NEVER SEE IT.
I…I’m…I’m speechless. That just started from “awesome”, slid casually past “hilarious” and crescendoed into “bloody marvellous”.

ParticipantGreat minds think alike, eh, Leica? Of course, either way means the dog was behind the wheel…
Dogs are actually okay drivers, as long as it’s not an automatic transmission. They’re great with a stick.

ParticipantThat’s a great picture. He looks so focussed on whatever he is doing.
Didn’t Dancin in Anson win the Animals competition with a shot of his dog Marley doing something similar?
Maybe you could sneak it into the passenger side photography theme. Just say you took the shot in the UK or wherever else they have right-hand drive (which, of course, is the way it should be).LeicaLens
ParticipantThe thing is, as print sizes go up, the dpi/ppi count can go down some, but you won’t notice it in the final print partly because you just don’t necessarily need 300dpi, and partly because viewing distance goes up with print size (e.g. you aren’t viewing a poster sized print with your nose 2 inches from the print–you stand back further to take it in).
That’s very true, and I hadn’t really thought of it like that. I have been toying with the idea of getting the local camera store to print out a photo or two on A3 size, just to see how it comes out (and we need some decoration on our walls), now I think I will go ahead with it. Thanks! 😀

ParticipantI have never printed out anything of mine on anything larger than A4 photopaper, and I am not sure if my 10 Megapixel 4/3 mount camera can go much larger without seeing a significant drop in picture quality.
if you’re still reading this thread go to sam’s (or cosco possibly or any place that has one of those roll printers) and try it out. i had a 3008×2000 pixel 3.78MB photo blown up to 16×20 and it turned out great. was using a 5 megapixel DSLR camera.
the folks at sam’s told me the size was too small to do that. ha, fooled them. and it was <$20.
Thanks. I will check at my local camera stores to see what type of printer they are using.
The websites I looked at seem to suggest that the limit with 10 megapixels is 12.91″ x 8.64″ at 300ppi (about A4 size), but that seems a little conservative to me.I’m quite curious about print sizes. I currently scan a lot of 35mm film negatives at 4800 ppi (or is that dpi?), which creates a bigger file with more pxiels than images taken on my digital camera, so I am wondering how big I can go with prints.

ParticipantI printed my Guitar Triptych at 20×30 and hung it up in my living room, and I love it. Now if only I had the money for decent 20×30 frames with museum anti-glare glass…

Although I rather expected you to have giant bug porn prints all over your walls…LeicaLens
ParticipantJust want to post a follow up to the FD lens on EOS mount conversation.
I got my first lot of film back that I had taken using the FD conversion mount with 2 FD lenses (50mm F2, 100mm F2).
The results are okay, but the shots (B&W film) are quite contrasty. I was using Ilford ISO400, which I haven’t used before, so I am not sure if the constrastyness is a result of the film or lens/mount combination.
Also, the camera had a tendency to underexpose slightly. Outdoor shots worked much better than indoor.LeicaLens
ParticipantAs a follow up to the FD;Micro4/3 cameras, his guy uses FD lenses on his Panasonic GF1:
http://tysonrobichaudphotography.wordpress.com/2010/04/29/g-fdd-up-from-the-feet-up-or-how-i-saved-thousands-buying-fd-lenses/Not that I am suggesting you get FD lenses and a micro4/3 camera just to try them out.
He also says he gets decent results on his 40D, but not so much on his full-frame 5D MII (which makes sense).
Interesting read. Seems like he got a great deal on his lenses.Really makes me think more seriously about the micro4/3, especially as I have E-system Olympus lenses that with work with a mount.

ParticipantI want to write more, but don’t have enough spare minutes (I get verbose), but I did want to mention that FD lenses will NOT work on current DSLR’s. There’s an adapter you can get, but the one without glass will lose infinity focus, and the one with glass will degrade image quality. So FD lenses are pretty much useless on anything but old FD mount film cameras. On the other hand, if you want to play with old Canon film cameras, FD lenses are cheap and the cameras are built like tanks. I <3 my late father's AE-1P and have considered getting some additional lenses for it.
That makes me a sad Panda. I saw a fairly positive review of an FD lens on an EOS film camera (which I have), so I bought the adapter (already have a couple of FD lenses). The first roll of film has just gone in for developing, so I don’t know what the results be.
The FD lenses are supposed to be great on the micro four-thirds, as olavf said, but I reckon focussing on the back screen would be a pain.LeicaLens
ParticipantWoah, my first simulpost on Farktography.
