Since I missed last week (somehow Wednesday slipped right by me) I might just use one or two of those again. They were posted late Thursday night and probably haven’t been seen by most people.

I also might use the images I shot when I didn’t realize buildings weren’t allowed for “Abandoned Things.” Since they’re all bright and airy, I can’t even use them for “Dark and Forbidding.”

I hate to say this because I’ve got one HDR I like, but I think the rules should apply, to keep all the entries on even footing.

I’ve got two question, just to clarify:

“Repeats are allowed but not required”… so that means that photos from contests in the previous year are allowed, but are any photos from the previous year (shot between 5/14/07 and 5/14/08) allowed?

We had an HDR contest in December. If photos within the last year are allowed, are any HDR photos within the last year allowed, or just photos from the HDR contest?

I picked 20+, but it varies. I try for one good one, but if lighting conditions are difficult or there are other factors which make me doubt that one, I’ll bracket or shoot several to be sure. Self-portraits have required 50 or more, because I couldn’t use a tripod and therefore couldn’t frame the shot.

Shooting digital is good and bad for these reasons. I have room to play if I’m not sure of a shot, but then I end up with a ton of trash.

Wow, I thought this was forgotten long ago. Thanks for the birthday present.

Crap, this means I’ve got to think of something hopeful now.

Not the same, but similar: a friend started a writers’ group by placing an ad in the local newspaper. A few people responded, she established leadership and weeded out the ones with clashing philosophies, and now they meet every other week.

Because they meet in the library and in bookstores, they became familiar faces and have gotten (and accepted) offers to speak about what they do. She’s found new members by speaking in public.

Get your face and contact info out there and maybe something will gel.

not to be cynical at all, this is the funnerest photo club.. my favorite time of the week is 5 pm pst, but… well, you’re just climitizing yourself to what people who think fark is a good place to go for a photo contest think is a good picture…

one should post 1 or 2 pictures that you believe in rather than average yourself out…

I think it’s fun, too, and it motivates me to stop and take pictures on days when I would probably let real life get in the way.

It’s not that I’m averaging myself out, it’s just that for the most part, it’s only me who looks at my pictures. I get very little objective input. The people who vote on my pictures (or vote for one rather than another) have three credentials which make their vote valuable to me:

    1) They have at least one eyeball.
    2) That eye does not belong to me.
    3) They saw something in my pictures that motivated them to actually reach for the mouse and click the check box.

I don’t think that everyone voting for a picture is a brilliant and well educated professional art critic. And I don’t think they’re all bored and wandering through the contest while they wait for the next boobies link to be posted. They’re just people who can be objective where I can’t. And I’m grateful that they took the time to look.

I have so much to learn that every chance I get is valuable to me.

If we go down to one entry per person, I will lose a whole layer of understanding–the ability to compare my pictures and understand why one is more interesting than another. I’ll probably still participate, but it won’t be as useful to me. I’ll just be taking potshots at what my best picture might be, and because I don’t have the experience to judge well, my belief of what’s best is grounded only in my subjective opinion.

I speak only for me, your mileage may vary. Batteries not included, and so on.

It would become a hunt for votes instead of a forum for sharing cool photo ideas. Think “Top 40 radio.”

    Yeah, what he said.

or.. it makes you, the photographer, think about what works in a picture and what dont

Clearly I’m not a pro, but I don’t think I know what works in a picture. By posting three and comparing votes, I’m slowly beginning to understand why my lousy picture was so much better than the one I really liked.

Maybe this isn’t the place to be learning. That would be a shame, though, because I can’t get anywhere near as many objective eyeballs anywhere else.

My photos are always so far down no one sees them.

    Three thoughts, though:

    1) This one went green quickly, and there was heavy participation. I don’t see stats yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of new people. Pick topics that are a little less universal and you’ll see less entries. (Picking topics that are less universal also forces me to search for images I wouldn’t normally shoot.)

    2) Three entries gives me lots of room to experiment.

    3) Of my entries, I generally have one that is my favorite, one that I’m not as pleased with, and one that I’m not at all pleased with. The last one gets the most votes, always.

There does need to be a limit, but I’m happy with three, even if it may force me to go TF once the paychecks start again. (I work at a school–no work over the summer.)

staplermofo, I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in love with Heidi. Damn, what a gorgeous dog.

I’ll post the ones I also wanted to submit, but I can’t do it tonight. I’m not home (I’m dogsitting,) so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow night.

Does anyone have an ETA for the greenlight?

So I tried it out over the weekend and ended up starting a fire. I guess two halogen lights inches from a fabric-covered stand is a recipe for disaster.

This thread is useless without PICTURES!

I’d be happy to, if you don’t get a TFer to offer.
