What’s funny is that I bought her a set of clubs for her birthday…

I’ll play – I opted for the mantis over this one, partially because I just didn’t want to post two spiders. The other problem is that it’s impossible to get a sense of scale from the shot. This spider is walking on the side of a three-cell Maglight.

    And the uncropped version.

Not to compare myself to U-Man (or anyone else for that matter) but I shot mine with a Sigma 70-300mm lens that I bought for $99 on Ebay. Just flipped the switch to Macro and shot the ISO way up and went for it. I’m going to get myself a Canon EF 100mm Macro soon, but I don’t think I could’ve done better with it on. Don’t sell yourself short, all the gear in the world doesn’t replace a good eye, and you’ve got one.

Don’t be afraid to look at that Sigma 50mm/F2.8 macro too. It does a really good job at the macro stuff, and you might find it more generally useful, especially if you don’t have a prime in that area. We got to play with the Canon 100mm before we bought Kat’s, and I think she’s happier having gotten the 50.

    /ideally, I’d like to have both 😉

I am, BTW, moderately proud of my butterfly. Whatever the vote total may say! 😀

I haven’t been doing so well lately, so I can’t even begin to call mine 😛 But I like your 8:01

I found a spiffy scripts for the Gimp that works pretty well – Especially once you figure out how to modify it so it defaults to your name, etc.

Lately I’ve taken to not tagging the 640x post print, but I do tag the pop versions – basically anything big enough someone could print.

I felt like the imprimatur was making the small versions a bit too ‘fussy-looking’ for my tastes. YMMV though.

The big stumbling block for me & medium format has been the glass. I mean, I’ve seen Hasselblad bodies for under $500, but by the time I get a back, and even a single prime add at least 1K to that :/

have two series of jumping spider, one from today and one from a while back, but don’t like any of them that much. those little buggers are hard to shoot and get decent DOF.

lol. yes they are. I chased one around yesterday, but didn’t get much I liked out of the deal. It was shady, so the lighting was only marginal 😛

FWIW, that’s about what I do too. I was taking pictures of a pillbug yesterday, for example, and I set the lens to the minimum focal length and moved around until the thing was in focus. Or, more frequently, got ahead of it and waited. Those little buggers are *fast* when they’re on a mission…

Also, pillbugs on concrete can be pretty uninteresting, because most of my shots ended up more suitable for kestrana‘s B&W&G contest than this one :/

Ain’t digital grand! I am glad I learned to shoot on film first, for the discipline of cost that it taught, but I LOVE being able to shoot a hundred shots to get ten good ones.

Totally. I find myself experimenting a lot more to get just the shot I want, too, because I can. That’s probably my favorite part of going digital.

…and then the dinosaurs came, but they all got fat and died. But, along came the Arabs, and they bought Mercedes Benzes!

/thanks for the recap Els 🙂

ennui – I hear you. One of my shots this week is going to be a jumping-type spider that I took last year and have been saving for just this contest. It took me nearly an hour and untold shots to get the one I wanted…and, thankfully I’d bought Kat a macro lens for her last birthday so I was able to borrow it to chase the little bugger around 😛
