ParticipantWhat would define a different composition? I set up my lego scene, and tried to use different views. Some focus on the villagers with a bit of the dragon, some are zoomed out and show both dragons I made. I also took on two different days so there are differences (however small) also in the placement of some things. I was thinking of putting one up each with the views I described above (lego villagers and then more on the dragons). I also have a light one I did with letters and shadows, but Hubby doesn’t think it should be put in. He wanted me to ask in case it would disqualify me or something. Thanks.
Mine are three different shots in a storyboard motif, FWIW. I was having too much fun playing with the kids’ toys in the back yard…

That’d be awesome. Make sure Kat gets a video camera going, too.
lol I know she got pics of me doing my dragon shots over the weekend. Don’t know if she plans on using them though.
/they’re actually pretty funny :/olavf
ParticipantIn the compact camera market, Canon seems to do a lot better overall than Nikon, but things are a bit different when you start looking at DSLRs.
Nikon and Canon are the two biggest companies in that market (but there are others – Pentax, Sony, Olympus etc), and most professionals use one or the other. There’s a large range of lenses and accessories available for each system, but they aren’t generally intercompatible.
The perceived advantage between them tends to swing back and forth depending on where they are in their release cycle (whichever one currently has the cool new toys, basically), but I don’t think there’s a lot in it overall. They do tend to have somewhat different ergonomics, though. I had a strong preference for Nikons when I handled them side by side, and I’ve heard other people who had exactly the opposite reaction.
I think the ergonomics are the main difference. I went the Canon route, because my big foray back into photography was a Canon Pro-1 (at the time it was a Rebel without interchangeable lenses) and when I was ready for a ‘real’ camera I was already comfortable with holding the Canons, and familiar with the layout.
clouddancer the fun is going to start with the lenses. On the Canon side, the EF and EF-S lenses are fairly different in a few significant ways. On a Rebel, or the xxD series (like my 40D) the focal distance of an EF lens is not the same as an EF-S, because of the sensor size of the camera, and the distance from the back of the lens to the sensor IIRC, it’s something like 1.6x the number on the lens, so for example my 50mm behaves like an 85mm from the camera’s point of view. Not a bad thing, necessarily, but it needs to be compensated for especially if you’re looking at taking wider angle shots. Also, if you ever move up to a ‘full-size’ camera like the Mk-series, the EF-S lenses won’t be compatible. Again, probably not a big deal, ’cause I assume you’re like me and will never have one without winning the lottery. I’m assuming the same applies to the Nikon AF vs AF-S lenses but that’s not my bailiwick.

ParticipantI’ll second that. Either one of those will do nicely. The other thing I’ll suggest is to go to a store that sells them and pick them up and see how they feel to you. push the buttons, play with the controls, etc.
Figure that once you start down one path or another, you probably won’t want to switch once you’ve bought a couple of lenses…

ParticipantCongrats to orionid and U-Man for two outstanding entries, and a well-deserved tie!
laz-long, I suspect that the beginning of summer has a lot more to do with the “soft” turn-out than anything else. The last couple of contests have been generally on the low side, both from a number of entries, and from a voting standpoint. But, voting is closed for us now, so it’s all done…
On future contests, and I agree, there should be more of them, I’m sure we could come up with a theme broad enough to give a variety of entries to the PS’ers. Other than a few contests like ‘cats’ and ‘birds’ it seems like there’s stuff from all over the map anyway. But i also agree, allowing outside sources seems like a good idea next time.
We should definitely continue the conversation though, and think about another one in a couple/six months? Rather than an annual?

ParticipantI suspect unless they follow PSAEF that they’re not going to anyway, unless they happen to follow the Farktography threads as well. Their contest isn’t going to go green for a few more days after all, so most of the liters probably don’t know about it as it is.
I know that gives an even bigger advantage to those that pony up the $5, but it seems to me that that’s already the case.
anyway, didn’t day it was a great idea, just an idea I thought worth discussing.

Participantyeah, me too. Maybe collaborate on a theme next time too? Our theme > their theme kind of thing.
I was wondering too… Not sure if it’s a good idea, or even possible, but what about doing the greenlighting of our crossover contests so that their contest and our contest start a day apart and hit the main page on the same interval?

Participantnow you’re thinking 😉 I’m probably going to grab some of my kid’s toys too since there’s not much around town here by way of dragons – unless you count one of the local HS sports teams.
setting up the shots and taking the pics is what it’s all about anyway. FWIW, for the recent macro contest I entertained myself for a couple of hours writing on grains of rice with a felt-tipped pen (literally). The pic I used of Just Kat (my wife) for this week was an off-shoot of four or five nights of standing out in the dark waiting for the moon to be in *just* the right place… over two months because you only get a few nights of full moon…

Participantpersonally, that’s kind of iffy. It really depends on how the pics turn out.
I’d probably shy away of pics of books, but that’s just me.

ParticipantWelcome to the party clouddancer! Make sure and check the contest thread again in a day or so – often times some of the best pics aren’t submitted until the morning after…
FWIW, I make a text file with the html for my entries each week the day of the contest. I settled on a format I’m more or less happy with, and that keeps me consistent. Plus, it gives me time to think about any extra text I might want to add around the picture- titles, subnotes, whatever. And I’ll usually run them through the scratchpad (http://www.fark.com/cgi/comments.pl?IDLink=69#new) to make sure all the links pop and whatnot before I post.

ParticipantI was just reading your H/W thread. Bloody brilliant, man. Good luck with the shots!

ParticipantI made my first ever photoshop entry, but I used one of my images as the source. (Ranger Joe provided the other part.)
I’m debating that, but I’ll probably wait until the weekend when I have time to put into it.

ParticipantCool!
How did you trigger it?
