Jeez, this is horrible to hear about. I can’t think of what to say, other than I’m pullin’ for ya, man. Good luck.

I did have some great ideas for Apples vs. Oranges. We’ll see if they come to….Fruition.

    Pun intended.

I am currently making a whole package of bacon. Large quantities of alcohol have been imbibed. I hope the photos come out well…

That’s how you start the weekend off right.

It was pretty great-Martinis, Rum Screwdrivers, bacon sandwiches…
But all the photos came out hopelessly blurry. Oh well, time to get more bacon!

mine don’t reek of desperation (ooops they do) desolation but after a few weeks of having nada it’s nice to post again.

You took the words right outta my mouth. Or off my fingertips, really.

Yeap, looks like dust to me. The first thing you’d want to try is the “Clean Sensor” function on the D7000’s menu (it’s buried somewhere in there, and almost certainly in the manual). If that doesn’t work, go for the rocket blower. If THAT doesn’t work, sensor swabs. That’s my usual procedure, anyway, and I clean my sensor every so often, just in case.

I’d like to start something I’ve been thinking about for a while. Learning about the technical aspect of photography is fairly straightforward, but I’d like to start looking into the art side of it more, and I want to start by making a study of composition by looking at the great painters and other visual artists. They were working out all the problems and optimizations of visual art long before the camera was even invented, so that seems like a logical place to start.

Oh, and Olavf, you’ve got me thinking about that question. It’s a tough one to answer!

Wow, that’s awesome. The guy clearly knows a bit about photography, and he lays an epic smackdown upon the defendants. I like.

Is there any way to see the magnetic field around that blast? I’ll add that to the wishlist as well…

Spectropolarimetry would work. You could get the B field vector, as well as Zeman splitting from line widths, so you could get both the orientation and the strength of the field. If you’re using a multi-object spectrograph, you could get a whole map of the explosion in 4 dimensions: x,y, magnetic field, spectrum.

/Horray, for once astrophysics knowledge is useful for something!

This will be perfect for me- I have my one and only exam this semester on Monday, so I’ll have plenty of time to procrastinate on Tuesday, and more than enough time on Wednesday to shoot around the island. Since the beginning of November, it’s been like the hammer came down, and it’s only lifting just now.

Also, as a side note, part of my job is calculating the publicity value of forum posts and google plus and all that crap. According to our publicity value calculator, any mention in a farktography thread is worth $32,150.
A half page mention in National Geographic is worth $32,825.25

    Me = Floored.

Farktographer: The interior lighting of the observatory is actually really dim-about as dim as the stars. This is fairly necessary, since there’s optical telescopes around, and they don’t want light pollution.

Chupa: Which tracking mount? I’ve been looking at the Astrotrac tt-320x-AG, which would go well with my current tripod. I probably won’t be able to afford it until the summer, though.

Okay, so I did the firmware update just now, and now the wheel doesn’t work again. Headache.

I was thinking more of a hard reboot, but reloading firmware might work too.

That would be a much quicker option, and prolly aughtta be tried first…

Holy crap, that worked! I can’t imagine why it was a software issue, but the wheel is working just fine now. Thanks for the help, and watch for a gallery of all my images from this trip sometime tomorrow!

Alright, I’ve managed to hack the camera back into some semblance of working order. It seems the forward control wheel only works for changing shutter speed when it’s set like this, and all of the other functions (ISO, white balance, etc) are still controlled by the back wheel. I’ve managed a workaround for this, but I would still really like my camera’s full functionality back!

Oh, and thanks for the advice, sleeping, I’m trying not to freak out too much-a level head is most appreciated.
