Orionid; as a long-time proponent of nuclear (or nucular, as it sometimes is) energy, I thank you for that, and I will share it. TYVM.

Congrats Plama! The first win is always the sweetest. I’m thrilled to have tied U-Man in 3rd, one for the company, the other for filling in the ‘last’ top 10 spot I had yet to get.

//The moment, however, would be a little sweeter if we knew Corsec was okay in Japan, though. 🙁

I know voting is still open, but it looks like this might be my first win. I’m kinda relieved-it looked for a while like I was going to be cursed to only get 3rd place at best. I did have a slight advantage in materials and access, however :).

I was wondering about this the whole contest. It’s a farktastic picture! Me, I’m still hoping for 3rd (I don’t have a bronze win yet), but it’s not looking like I’ll get it. Not that I’m complaining–2 in the top 10 makes me plenty happy. My 2nd highest vote week evar.

Glad to hear you and yours are okay, Leica; any idea where Corsec would have been?

With any luck, they’re both going to be fine, and they’re going to split the pulitzer this year.

Leica is listed here as being located in Fukuoka; about 5-600 miles SW of the quake epicenter. Corsec is listed as being in Colorado, so I don’t know where he’s at (I can’t figure out how to search that on fark proper.)

On a break at work and logged in to ask this same question. Hope they are okay, and that we hear from them soon.

And then, if they ARE okay–I want pictures.

Funny this should come up… yesterday I was in a sci-fi mood while having a smoke break, and I wondered what it would take to actually pull this off (hey, I’m just the visionary for this project, it’s up to someone with actual brains to collect the Nobel in physics for the lab work). So, someone needs to develop a material that has an Index of Refraction that varies with the angle of incidence of the incoming light. While they’re at it, they might want to come up with something that varies the IOR with frequency so we can have single-element APOs as well. 😆

From whom are you getting the smokes with which to have these breaks, and does he ship to Arizona?

/not for myself, mind you; my neighbor wants to know.

Me too with mine, Kes. There ought to be a “Fark’s Nature Guide to the Behavior of Voters in the Fark Wilds”.

Elsinore, that’s a lovely shot of Orion’s Nebula; may I ask the details of what was used and the settings?

I’m No Big Deal–your 8:13:55 image gave me a neat idea to try–thanks!

Orionid I mourn with you upon learning of your loss of shoes. LOL

I surely don’t think my current standing will last for long–I got a friend at work last night to join and then vote (helps to work 12 hour shifts!), and my two regular FB friends who actually cared enough to join have already voted, as did I, so it’s kinda slanted toward me momentarily. That will surely change, unless I can coerce some other people*. And I always encourage people to vote for any pics they like–I recently learned my mom thought she could only vote for 3 entries, when she revealed she voted for only two of mine because she like someone else’s so much she just had to vote for it (I can dig up the picture that was, but I believe I commented about it at the time). I politely edumacated her otherwise, and got my damned third vote. 🙂

*//haven’t done so well at recruiting, overall. I envy you guys who have kids/spouses/siblings etc. from whom you can withhold allowance/sex/childhood embarrassments from public knowledge (respectively, mind you).

Some really great, unique entries! Kestrana, right now we’re neck-and-neck tied for 3rd with very similar pictures and even captions.

Does the black have to be the object of the photo? I have some pics that are 3/4 black, but then have a colored object.

I believe it just has to have a lot of black in it. The pictures I’m planning on using have some color in them, but the majority of the photograph is black/dark.

That’s what I was thinking, too. I’ve got a sunrise sillouette (sp?) and a black butterfly thusfar. Hope these are good…

If those are just the bees, I’m sunk.

This, Plama. But I’m posting anyway.

Hey–now hold on a minute…just my opinion, I take NO responsibility in your selections…

unless you do really well, then it’s all me. Of course.

Plama, that sun picture is outstanding–I’d go with it (and if I did, I’d replace the sun image I planned on using…now I gotta rethink my entries, dammew!!)

Mopsy, I agree with the moon assessment–you can see more of the stars in the bigger version, but then you can also see the horrible CA on the moon, too. Hence the decision to let it go. I’m wondering if the moon ever passes directly over them, though, as the brightest stars could be all around the moon, judging from the distances, if it were just right–and THAT would be a cool photo. I like the one with the night cactus, too, and the road next to it–but I’m sure it will be outdone, and there’s the issue of the thin cloud horizontally across the photo (also a problem with the Orion shot). However, it IS currently my desktop background, and only got replaced when I took what became my third entry, a bit more terrestrial in nature.
