Very tough contest. Query: I understand messing with saturation goes against the grain of the theme. But what about overall adjustments in color temperature? I have a very nice shot of monsoon clouds nearing sunset that, when adjusted to 3100K, might work for this contest (I think it’s a close call, but then the theme is ‘could be mistaken for b/w’; but I’ll leave that up to you. Along with some other ‘please yeay or nay these’)

and, staplermofo I think I see where you’re going – make it more about the Farktography, and why it is we loonatics do what we do, and let the pictures highlight the words? I like it.

That’s a really well-put way to condense S’s suggestion. I like it, too (especially since you translated it in to English for noobies.)

a double-dutch rudder would probably be NSFW though.

{roles dice}; -2 to your savings throw. NSFW involves people vicariously watching other people, etc.

Possibly a -2 to your stamina, as well, depending on what you did while observing said NSFW activities. (But it only lasts for 3 rounds; after that you rejuvenate.)

Or double dutch, Justkat? I’d say go for it. Kick the can, hide-and-seek also fine; Not in the Olympic games, or have an ‘official’ merchandise line?: Probably okay.

Here’s what I’m trying to avoid: A bunch of Sports Illustrated-esque type-shots of scenes where people have vicariously gotten enjoyment out of watching people who should[/] be getting said enjoyment (but whom instead had been way too serious about doing so due to paychecks, machismo, whatever), without said people having actually actively participated in the event themselves.

Here’s what I’m wanting to see: Either families and/or friends having a good family time together without needing a paycheck or interview to back up the experience, or the pieces (or people) and/or game hardware required that support that general idea of a good time.

Upload picture in largest available resolution to said pools.

I don’t know that flickr can handle that. I’m only using 2.5% of my 150 gigs web space, and get 1.5 terabits per month upload/download–and come within .2 percent of that. I could handle the large size pics, I think. if the average pic was 8 Mb, I’d get 187k views of them per month out of the account. For not much more (and I’d agree to it; new job is going well and I can afford it now), I can have unlimited bandwidth/storage space for such a venture.

I wonder why I am not on that list? I have a third place and a 4th place? Not complaining…just curious.

Had the same question [number 5, ‘squares’; but got to reading the entire thread (so much for sleep today.)

Ya’ll have figured I’m a bit enthusiastic about farktography despite being a noob, so I do have some thoughts, though. Sue me if it’s out of line there’s no money in it for ya, go ahead.

High school yearbooks are a pretty standard size nationwide, so that size as a result might be cheaper to produce (12″h x 9″w if I recall.)

If you’re looking at ‘Farktography 2009’, the goal is to get it published before it’s 2011, it would seem to me. If it’s not ‘Martha phuqin’ Stewart’s’ Farktography yearbook this year, who cares? Get it done, get the point across in a decent fashion, and hope for the best. One of the posts mentioned decent quality in a Christmas book. Run with that in mind, I’d say.

The ‘best’ would be more farktographers, of course (leading to sequels of, perhaps, better quality). The ‘point’ is that good photography isn’t always about fancy cameras and mad photo skills; talent plays a role in success, but so do humor, happenstance/good luck, motivation, and a willingness to participate and learn–which are kind of the things that can lead to success in life, as well.

    Format suggestion: 4 page/contest (208 pages); first page left, winner; 2nd page right, 2 & 3; 3rd page left 4 & 5; 4th page right, biographies.

(If you went to 10, then 1, 2 and 3, 4-6, and 7-10 (5 page format), and either way amend shots to fit as needed–that’s what happens in life when you tie–a little limelight is taken away. Beyond 10? Good luck with that–it wouldn’t be a coffee table book, it would be a sr. year college art history textbook)

Yes, U-Man and Elsinore would be bio’d to death. Fine. Use the opportunity to lampoon them–that’s fark. Bio this and that in the beginning ‘chapters’. Then start in on the “U-Man: What, did you just flip to this page while pinching a loaf in the john? Don’t you know about him already? Who’s house is keeping this book in the bathroom? This is an insult! Wrap this book up in toilet paper, seal with tape, and send it back to P.O. Box {blah-blah-blah, get stapler to write the copy}(for more information on U-Man, see pages x, y and z)“

If it’s not fun, then it is neither fark, nor farktography, in the end {of the pinched loaf}.

Can’t get permission? Leave a ‘404 page’ error message, with a blurb about why, and an offer to ‘include {such and so screen name} in the ‘reprints’ {some pithy joke about going to reprints} if they contact such-and-so listed at the end of the book. It is a contest. Some people are one-hit-wonders, never heard from again. Apparently, one person has past on to that great farktographer’s forum in the skynet. Even so, readers can always see them by coming here if they must–and maybe there’d be another farktographer because of it, or maybe someone might become active in participating again (and, if there’s ever reprints…)

So there’s my 1 cent. About worth as much, I’d gather. Or you can go with Kestrana’s latest and go ala object de stapleur.

Either way, I’ll buy a copy of what you come up with, and should a 2010 version come about, I got one shot for it and will try to better it by a few more before 2011 rolls around.

I’d be happy to contribute pics, but against the likes of this group, I’d feel pretty outclassed. However if any of you have a particular photo I’ve done that you’d like to see included, I’d be more than happy to sign a waiver for it’s use.

Me three, lokisbong and Kestrana. AND one pic is even in 8th place, currently (and it’s the one Kes and Els suggested I use–thanks!!)

Quick question. Somewhere–God only knows where, but I remember seeing something that tells you how to figure out what kind of macro you’ve got.

    Well, I ain’t got one.

What I do have is my Darlot antique lens (80mm focal length and 40mm diameter; ignore crap photo, I was rushed.)

That, and with my Canon xTi and Tamron 75-300mm telephoto, zoomed to 300 and with the Darlot held up to it (I’ll need to rubberize the Darlot if I’m to toy with this), I got this (in millimeters):

(again, ignore crap photography, I just wanted to see if I could focus it and make it bigger than what I’d done with the 28-80 lens).

So, Canon sez the sensor is 22.2×14.8mm, and I seem to remember someone saying macro was sensor size divided by true image size? Would that be (approx) a 2.2 macro? Or maybe the inverse, a .4545… macro?

I forgets. We drinks ya know. But just asking. Not that I could catch a bug with it or anything–the depth of field is horrible.

p.s.; it took a long time (1/4000 exposure, 1600 iso, these little phuckers are phast…), but I got a couple ants. They’re about 2mm each (the backend of one in one pic is about 5mm–guestimations; they don’t sit still for measuring) Pics edited differently.

Re image shack, I’ve found if they don’t load to hit refresh and sometimes the remaining pics come through on the second pass.

Re Curious’s comment; sharpen helps in RAW, but it helps more when it’s more focused to begin with. Definitely a problem, same thing; too close. There’s a ‘range’ when shooting up close that says it’s focused, either too near or too far.

And for Else on the ‘still’ shots; the I think my motion is pretty evident except the ‘objects in mirror’ shot; that one was maybe 5 mph at f16-20 (forget which exposure I wound up using). Might have been 3 mph. But we were moving–just really really slow; I just didn’t want to drop my darlot!!

No one has mentioned aircraft yet…yea? nay?

I had a shot from an airplane, and a shot on the metro of a landing airplane; both became b-sides. Tough choices this week.

Looking at my Flickr I can see definitive improvement in my photography from last September when I first started; this set http://www.flickr.com/photos/kestrana/sets/72157623542251562/ is a good example (it’s ordered newest to oldest). I’ve (grudgingly 😉 ) seen improvement in you from when you started already. I even said so to orionid when I saw your airplane lights picture from All Night Long.

I’ve been to your Flickr before; I’ll have to revisit with a more critical eye (I thought they were all fantastic, as I do most albums I see from you’s peoples). Viewing all of them has helped in composition. Thanks for the compliment; Learning to do the editing (in progress) has helped a great deal, as has the realization that my tamron lenses on my Canon body do *not* auto focus with precision; I’ve gone to manual focus with bracketing (or auto preset then switch to manual and bracket).

Would’a been a good ‘Pan’ shot. Oh well, in the end, I am learning (grudgingly) to do as you suggest; enter what I like, damn the consequences (though I’m getting more votes, so I am getting better, at least in this venue.)

Okay, Kestrana & Else; I’ll go with the mtns. I just fear everyone and their brother will have that same shot–only better (that was a P+S camera; I didn’t even have a RAW to work with…). I’ll hope my other two do well, at least. And as always, I always keep the b-sides in mind for possible future contests.

I dunno…artsy doesn’t always play well on Fark, and in the case of your picture, there’s not any real context to tell you it’s a shot while in a moving car, so it can kinda come across as just being randomly motion blurred like you dropped the camera or something.

Interesting. I do have a wider-view alternate, this time in color (though I kinda like the b/w version myself–but your the expert!)
