ParticipantYou weren’t alone hehe 😆
In other news, I think we broke the FSM….
yeah, well… we had some big storms blow through Central TX last night and the Schneeworld Corporate Data Center lost power. Key people are working hard to restore power. The FSM should be back in a bit.
Everyone is fine. Most slept right through it.

ParticipantIm glad I had the incredibly original idea of shooting flowers for this contest.
I was taking a photo class and during the Spring semester, everyone brought in images of Echinacea purpurea*. Everyone. When it was my turn, I almost declined to show. It got pretty humorous.
* – Purple Coneflower, which I declined to enter for this contest. My flower entry is a gayfeather.

ParticipantOK, instead of working on the FSM, I’ve been working on Sitegeister, which is the cause of the FSM outage last week. Lots of work left to do, lots of sites left to “geist”. How fun.

ParticipantThat ain’t too bad – nice composition, btw, much closer may have lost some of that.
Depending on your budget, one can add a diopter to the front of your lens. I have a Nikon 5T that sits on the front of my 70-200mm. I think it is a 62mm “filter”, so I use a step-down ring to go from the 67mm threads on the lens (stepping down is pretty much just stopping down, which increases DOF, which is a good thing for macro). When I add in my 1.4x extender, I can get 1:1 macro ratios (or really close, I can’t quite remember).
Canon makes a 500D diopter, but it was either way too small or too big for my lens.

ParticipantOK, it survived overnight. and didn’t take new memory – just some setting tweak.
And now more memory has been installed in the server and allocated to the service. I don’t know if the end-consumers will notice much difference, except, hopefully, more uptime.
(to the shall-remain-nameless person(s) who donated to the cause, thanks, and the FSM tells me that the indulgences have been granted – go forth and sin again)
(I really gotta pickup a camera again soon)

Participantschnee,
any chance for a short bio area on the individual farktography portfolio pages? or a link to our flickr or other websites?
Hm, well…, hm.
Right now, the portfolio’s link back to the Fark bio page (via the farktog’s name).
The system is just software, so anything could be done, but allowing personalization of the portfolio would require the FSM maintaining a user-base, with accounts that have edit privileges, and…and… It sort of snowballs. I don’t really see that happening anytime soon. I’m not saying ‘no’ – it is a good idea – just ‘don’t hold your breath’.

ParticipantFark makes use of quantcast.com, an open internet ratings service. Since it is open, Fark’s data is laid out for all to see.
I don’t think we’re going to fark Fark anytime soon (but the point about thread loading time is relevant).

ParticipantAh.. so you have a dedicated flash on the shoe that supports high-speed sync. Presumably, you can either (a) incorporate its output or (b) flag it out. And trigger the other strobes via the PC port.
That’s nifty.
schnee
ParticipantThat’s pretty interesting – it sounds like you set the DSLR to high-speed sync and then trigger the flash via the PC connector? Something like that?

ParticipantIf cost weren’t an issue, the Mark III 1Ds is the way to go. Just stay away from staplermofo.
Unknown about the ‘5D mark II’.
At this point, unless you have a very specific need for a new body (e.g. big print size) or you just really want to get a new body, I echo what Analogy said. Get some L lenses and move your light off-camera.
schnee
ParticipantI weighted that so heavily that I got a 2-year-old body (Canon 5D) instead of one of the newer, cropped-sensor models
Why?
I ‘grew up’ shooting film so I’m used to ’24mm’ meaning ’24mm as projected onto a 24mmx36mm piece of film’. I tend to shoot more wide than long, so I didn’t want to give up the field of view. I can (and do) print the images at 2 feet by 3 feet without any apparent degradation. And some likely false feeling that 12.7 mega pixels spread out over a full frame will have less crosstalk than 12.7 mega pixels spread out over a cropped sensor.
What I consider ‘bells and whistles’ (e.g. high frame rates, low noise at high ISO) are likely other people’s necessities. What’s a negative for me (crop factor) is a high positive for others (crop factor equates to telephoto multiplier).
schnee
ParticipantD3 is obviously full frame
You had me at “full frame”. I weighted that so heavily that I got a 2-year-old body (Canon 5D) instead of one of the newer, cropped-sensor models with their fancy Digic processors and high frame rates and integrated GPS / WiFi / cappuccino dispensers.
