Without talking to Drew (or delegate), we can only infer the number of people who view the contests – Fark shows how many people click on the link that goes to farktography.net, but doesn’t show how many people click on the comments section. Back in Nov 06, I asked Drew these sort of questions and he told me that a good PS contest draws over 40,000 views. In contrast, the Flower Power II contest drew 6271 views and was one of the more popular ones. Pretty small. That thread was contest #78 – we’ve doubled that now. Maybe things have changed. I’ll shoot a request to Drew for recent numbers and report back.

I have the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021Pro, which allows one to take out the center column and put it in horizontally, allowing for a straight down shooting position (it looks like newer models allow you to move to the horizontal position w/o completely removing the column).

It works well – you basically set up the shot between the tripod legs, which can be convenient or inconvenient, depending on the subject. The tripod is a bit heavy, and it requires a camera mount, which adds to the weight.

I also got the “shorty” center column so that when shooting “normally”, I can splay the legs way out and get real low.

The tripod is sturdy – I use for my refractor telescope, too.

That would have worked two weeks ago, UnstoppableDrew. But last week, you’d need to figure out how to work Eliot Spitzer, Britney Spears and High School into it.

Here’s how to do it with a quickcam; it even uses a 35mm film cannister.

I tell you what, those damn marbles almost ended my blissful married life. It took three nights and countless tries to get that single image, and I’m still not super happy with it.

This image had a nice length to the shadows, and the marbles weren’t blown out, but the “white” paper was anything but.

This one did OK on the shadows and marbles, and half of the paper was sort of white, but I got a gradient to gray which really horked me.

Finally, I removed the gradient by moving the flash way far away and letting the inverse square law do its thing to the flash fall-off, but the paper went back to gray. I couldn’t expose for white w/o blowing out the marbles.

If I reshot, I’d ditch the white paper and use something like blue.

    (all images pop)

    Hi andyofne:

You can keep track of your Farktography entries at your personalized portfolio. As mentioned previously, upcoming themes are posted on this site (farktography.net), with nearly-one-stop-shopping at the calendar page. It has the schedule out to March, now. (“Calendar” link found in the menu to the left of pritnear every page on Farktography.net)

Holy crap, congrats again soosh. That’s great (that you made the cover, not that stuff burned down).

That is pretty cool soosh, but I think mofo is onto something here. Did you light the fire to set up the shot? I’m pretty sure that’s against the rules.

Yeah, I could have done it with an SQL query, but I can’t get to that machine right now. So I just view-sourced the main page of the FSM and pulled down the thread ids. The rest was a combination of emacs and Excel.

    Since there isn’t a reward for winning a contest…

Heresy! Winners are immortalized at the FSM! Fame, a prize beyond riches.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the images that nail this theme will need dimension – to keep the lead, they will need to stick out and capture the decisive moment.

That’s my two cents worth, anyway.
