schnee – i’d like to apologize for not getting to this one much sooner

Methinks you worry too much. have a margarita.

if you’d like to expand upon the theme description please let me know.

LGTI, I’m thinking about people who aren’t in “heroic” roles doing “heroic” things, even something as simple as holding open a door for someone who really needs that door opened (as opposed to holding a door b/c of good manners).

actually i think the leaders at greenlight time only had 4-5 votes…..:P but farktog is responsible for a lot of us totalfarkers, so you wouldn’t be the first!

i got it for the regular contest time. hated waiting for it to go green.

Here’s where schnee says “yeah, there is a TF advantage, but it’s really not all that big”. Seriously, I ran the numbers, I made the charts, I discovered that there’s only a small advantage conveyed to early posters. Its there, mind you – on average, an early photo will get more votes – but it is not all that significant. Surprised the heck out of me. I may revisit that analysis at some point.

So what did I do? I took the software and morphed it into the Farktography Statistics Manager and then I went and got TF as well (specifically for farktogging).

Thanks everyone (v. funny, mikemikeb). Is it AW’ing if it is not you? AW-by-proxy? The whole Schneeclan is now under one roof. Chaos is soon to ensue.

I have a Canon kit – EOS 7e with a 420 EX flash. The flash was mounted on top of camera (usual position). I was a bit afraid that the lens would shadow the flash since my working distance was pretty limited, but that did not manifest.

I know this isn’t very useful, but I used the flash as a robo-flash and let the camera’s auto metering figure it all out. If I could, I probably would have thrown less light at the ice to reduce some of the reflections. Next time, I’ll try something like that.

I was mostly concerned with DOF and consequentially twiddled with the aperture setting and the DOF-preview.

Yeah..I didn’t get many votes, but that doesn’t really matter to me. I’m just fascinated that some other people liked my photos like I did!

We all say that…and we can read between the lines…

Seriously, you’ve got the right attitude.

Wow, there are a whole lotta boobies in this one (the fark meaning I mean, mannequins notwithstanding).

I noticed that too. One tick doesn’t make a trend, but it is nice to see

wow, my part of tx is just getting hit. If we ever have a “geysers caused by broken water mains within 500 ft of where you live” theme, I’ll have entries. We still have water and power. So far.

Other than that, Ice Storm 07 is photographically uninteresting. Snug Tight, stay tightly snugged and ‘Bort, damn.

schnee – be sure to take lots of ice storm pictures – nothing like the world encased in ice to make for some interesting subjects. stay warm!!

Totally intend to, if it ever freezes. Right now, we just got a lot of rain and temps in the low thirties. Hopefully too icy to go to work tomorrow so I’ll be out with the cam.

i also meant to say in the thread but i admire your tact schnee and the way you explained how things worked instead of firing away. i would like to subscribe to your newsletter 🙂

Your response was definitely classy, schnee. To quote veruca from the thread, “I bow to the Buddha in you.”

Elsinore, veruca. Thanks. I’ll have to go re-read the thread now….done.

I’m not always tactful. I remember sniping at people regarding some assumptions about the FSM and its direction, for example. Not my finest posts.

After doing a little research, should I go ahead and spend the extra $100-$150 and get the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens? I want to be able to zoom in on the SuperBikes at the races and other sports. Is this lens fast enough? Is there something better….

You handholding? Rule of thumb is a shutterspeed equal to the inverse of the focal-length (as a fraction of a second).

A 300mm lens means a 1/300 shutter speed – 1/250 to 1/500, minimum – to reduce lens-shake (or 1/480 if digital). Since you’d be doing action shots, you’ll likely be faster than that, but it is something to keep in mind. I mostly shoot static subjects with the kit on a tripod, so these speeds are foreign to me.
