ParticipantI alternate between Flickr and ImageShack. The entries typically break between the ones I think are “good” (-> Flickr) and the other ones (-> ImageShack). I really haven’t had a problem with either.
I don’t use a Flickr Pro account.

ParticipantSince I’m still on film
pardon me but WTF?
as much as i love film and am both cheap and broke ……
My “read-between-the-lines-Fu” is weak today. If I disparaged film, I did not mean to.
If the “WTF” was followed with a silent “are you still shooting film for, you luddite!”, well, I hear you. It’s just that the SchneeWorld.com CFO really likes slide-shows (comes from her youth). And for the money, DSLRs are still kind of pricey.
The good news is that the CFO also wants a largish flat panel HDTV. Once that happens, digital slide-shows are definitely a possibility so she may yet come around, and DSLR prices continue to drop.
they are great shots. now if you could get Austin to do that to about 89% of the town and surrounding areas i might move back. 🙂
Thanks for the compliment.
We have different perspectives, but I sort of like the way Austin is growing up.

ParticipantOccasionally, though, there is the shot of someone holding a door for someone else, where the shot contains the answer to the question “why should I care?“, i.e. why is this door holding more special (and heroic) than all other door holdings? And that shot will be damned good, and we will all want to see it!
Yes, well said.
I don’t have a shot like this in the archives, but I wish I did.
schnee
Participantthis being Fark and all, I predict that the winner will be a photo of a mother comforting a child with a bottle of Southern Comfort

ParticipantI’m thinking about people who aren’t in “heroic” roles doing “heroic” things, even something as simple as holding open a door for someone who really needs that door opened (as opposed to holding a door b/c of good manners).
Are you sure you want to make it that broad? And by broad, I’m talking about my sister…seeing a picture of somebody hold the door for her as she heads into the local Burger King might be good manners, but I don’t think it would make a compelling shot. The heroic shot would be somebody blocking it actually. 🙂
Agreed, I don’t want to see pictures of well-mannered people (see bolded text). I guess I would like to see photographs of “typical” heroes (firefighters, police officer, medical personnel) but I really want to see photographs of people going out of their way to help someone else out. Does that make sense?

ParticipantMan, this contest makes it look like there should ads for dating services on here.
Or counseling.
schnee
ParticipantThanks! I should have done this initially, but just didn’t think to do so.
I must confess that my motivation was less from credit-where-credit-is-due and more from disavowal. I find myself in a low-intesity job search and want to show the FSM to prospective employers. Some of the past photos in rotation (e.g. from Barbie and Ken) were, well, Not Safe For Resumes. Looking ahead, we’ve got Eat Me II and The Seven Deadly Sins so I figured I needed to do something to say “hey, I didn’t take that“.
And “Hobbies” is coming up. Shudder…

ParticipantThe other route I was currently looking into was Jalbum, http://jalbum.net.
I was going to suggest this (mostly to counter Zeke and his PHP-ness (it’s just something I do)), but I wasn’t able to figure out how to get it to function like a “live” gallery with comments and the like (and get it to plug into my existing infrastructure). There’s JGallery, which is a derivative-of-sorts of JAblum, but I’m not sure it allows comments either. (JGallery is at https://jgallery.dev.java.net/)

ParticipantDid manage to post one (I think).
Very cool! How did you get that shot?
schnee
Participantdamn, schnee – nice work!!
^^^ took the words right out of my mouth (fingers?)
Thanks. Feel free to reuse and/or repurpose any words or text.
schnee
ParticipantThank you for your efforts.
You are welcome. I didn’t mean too sound to mean, but there are minimum requirements that you need to meet to play in this sandbox. You could take up both GW’s offer of help and ‘Mofo’s offer of posting on your behalf until you get the hang of it. Both of those Farkers are super nice, but I suspect that both of them will want you to at least try.
As I said, Farktography will be diminished by your absence, but so far 2920 people have figured out how to get this to work…
schnee
ParticipantAnother decent place to find thumbnails of all of the Farktography entries is the Farktography Statistics Manager.
You can browse by theme and even look at Farktographer portfolios.

ParticipantHi bigtony99.
I hope you are still here. I feel bad b/c I wasn’t able to help you when you asked me this question a few months ago, so I’m going to try again. I’ve tried to make it as simple as I can, but it is harder than sending an email attachment. It will take a bit of effort on your part to learn it, but it is well worth it if you want to participate in Farktography.
If you want it easier, you really need to contact Drew Curtis (the guy who runs Fark) and get him to change the way images are displayed on Fark. No farktographer can help you with that; we really don’t have much to do with the way Fark is run.
Did you ever go to an amusement park or a carnival as a kid? I did, and I really wanted to ride the rollercoaster. There was a cartoon character about 4 feet high (one of the Banana Splits, IIRC) with a sign saying “to ride the coaster, you must be this tall”, with an arrow pointing to the top of the character. Hosting an image and understanding a little bit about HTML is sort of the Farktography equivalent. You must be this “tall” to play in Farktography. If you are not this “tall”, well, Farktography will be diminished by your absence.
I’m assuming you know how to make a JPEG image (technically, it could be a different format, but JPEG is pretty universal). Fark (not Farktography) has a hard limit of image dimensions – 700 px wide, 1200 px tall and no more than 200kb. I’m assuming that you know how to edit an image to fit into those dimensions. If you don’t, you need to learn.
The image host I usually use is ImageShack, http://www.imageshack.us (not ‘.com’ – note the ‘.us’). There are lots of image hosts out there and maybe some of them are a click or two easier, but this is the one I use. If you register at ImageShack, you will get access to a historical record of your images. If not, you don’t. Since you registered at Fark.com and Farktography.net, I’m going to assume you can figure out how to register at ImageShack.
When I go to http://www.imageshack.us, I’m presented with this page:

This is the screen that allows me to “host” an image. If you click the “browse” button (red arrow), you will be presented with a chooser that you can use to navigate to where your JPEG is hosted. It looks like this:

Navigate to your JPEG image and click on the “Open” button (lower right hand corner). You’ll get to this screen:

Make sure the checkboxes are as shown (particularly important to NOT select the “resize” one) and then click on “Host It” (red arrow, yellow oval).
If all goes well, you’ll get this screen:

notice the little image (“thumbnail”) that looks like the image you just uploaded. That means all went well. You’ll also see a lot of gobbly-gook text that looks like “code”. It is code, but for Fark, you only need to worry about one line of it, the line in the yellow box. That is the “HTML” that you will need to copy-and-paste into the Farktography thread’s “Add a comment” box. (I’m not going to define what “HTML” is; it really isn’t germane to the problem at hand.)
Fortunately, ImageShack makes this really easy. All you have to do it right-click in the text-line and select “copy”. ImageShack will auto-select all of the text:

After copying it, go to the Farktography thread that you are interested in entering and scroll down to the “add a comment” section:

Paste the copied text into the “Comment” box (yellow box), fill in your password and userid, make sure HTML enabled is checked and make sure “add voting for this entry” is also checked (not shown). Then “add comment” (red arrow).
You should get something that looks like this:

You may need to submit again, if you had the “preview” checkbox checked on the previous screen.
You can practice all this on Fark by going to the Fark scratchpad: http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=69. Check it out.
That may seem complicated. It is harder than attaching an image to an email, but it is what you gotta do if you want to play in Farktography. If you don’t want to jump through these hoops, you aren’t going to participate in Farktography; you aren’t “tall enough”.
Putting together these instructions was a bit of work. I hope that your photos are worth my while.

ParticipantOtto’s_Jacket
what Snug Tight said. I checked out your portfolio(*). You have some pretty cool aerial shots of downtown Denver in there. Gonna show some more?
(*)which I can’t get to appear as a clickable link. It is at http://www.schneeworld.com/fsm/portfolio/html/Otto’s_Jacket . Maybe the apostrophe?
