ParticipantShe should have her own hall of fame page 😀
Yeah, I’m working on something like that…

ParticipantWhee! Nice thread already. It’s nice to see CaptainJim back. 🙂
I got nuthin’ for this week, but maybe CaptainJim wants to reclaim the title from veruca.

Participant(back now, after a weekend of splashing in the Frio River)
That worked out rather well. Thanks veruca and staplermofo for carrying the torch and seeing it through. I’d like to do it again after this instance is but a fading memory.

ParticipantA big help is the Fark Scratch Pad. It lets you make comments, post images, &c. for practice. I do a trial run before almost every Farktography theme.
RE: ImageShack, I suggest using Photoshop to resize your image to Fark standards (< 60K and < 700 px wide and < 1200 px tall). You're probably already doing that. When you post to the 'Shack, don't let them resize to 240x320; uncheck that box. After uploading, don’t post the “thumbnail” code, find the embeddable code. If the IMG src has something like flood83zk.th.jpg in it (the ‘th’ is important) then you are posting the thumbnail. The embeddable link for sites will look like:

You can simply copy-and-paste that link into the scratchpad and see what happens.
You can also find the “direct” link. It will look something like this:
http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/1020/flood36wb.jpg
And then you can wrap your own img tag around that if you should want.
Using ImageShack, you may be able to get a higher res image uploaded. In that case, you’d probably want to upload the high-res one AND a Fark-sized one. “Simply” wrap the Fark-sized one in an anchor tag that href’s on over to the high-rez URL. Something like:
The Farksized image will be shown, which, when clicked, will bring up the hi-res one.
Easy! (yeah, right. Use the scratchpad).

ParticipantMe, my boobies was “Reflections” (#24). And I echo the thoughts. Not only have I had a pretty fun time, I met some nifty people. I also would have never been sponsored (thanks you two…) hadn’t it been for Farktography.
Ultimately, I get to hang with some amazing photographers who are pretty cool. That’s farktastic!
See you later tonight.

ParticipantWe are officially green. Going front page on 05/12 at 11:26AM EDT. Yay!
wow. thanks veruca!

Participantdo you have any info on good flatbeds?
I don’t know diddly about flatbeds.

ParticipantI have the 1st gen Konica-Minolta 5400.
Oh, I forgot. The 5400 has something called “Grain Diffuser”. It is used to reduce the film grain. It is a hardware/software solution and works fairly well, at the expense of increased scan times.
The Nikon has something similar called Digital GEM, which, I think, is software-only.
Here’s a kicker – you may have heard that KM is getting out of the camera business by selling the camera line to Sony. It became effective April 1. I’m pretty sure that includes the scanner line. I’m not sure you can even buy a 5400 anymore.
I hear real nice things about the Nikon line… 😉
schnee
ParticipantI don’t know. You’ve Farked-back so that’s taken care of. I guess just wait a day. We’ll miss the 12th, but oh well.

ParticipantI have the 1st gen Konica-Minolta 5400. I’m quite happy with it; it scans all the flaws in my images from either slide or negative film. I’ve heard very nice things about the Nikon Coolscans as well. The Nikon resolves 4000 dpi, while the K-M goes to 5400 dpi. This means that a 35mm image can go to 5400 x 7800 pixels, at 16-bit color depth. Using the 300 dpi output “rule” for prints, you’re talking a 18×26 image, and 300 dpi is on the high-side for large images.
Some trade-offs for larger resolution is larger files (200Mb per image from the K-M) and longer scan times (for full resolution). I find the K-M software confusing, but there are alternative such as VueScan, which is supposed to be very nice. The K-M’s autofocus does not always work, but for my “important” scans, I tend to manually focus the scanner anyway. I’ve heard that the Nikon’s autofocusing is very nice.
I reiterate the recommendation of making sure you get Digital ICE, which is a pretty nifty hardware/software mechanism for suppressing physical faults in the film (scratches, dust, &c.). It works much better than trying to fix those sort of things in an image editor. Both the Konica-Minolta and the Nikons have ICE.
One thing, however, those scanners are strictly for 35mm. You have something else to scan and you’ll need a different scanner (much more $$$).

ParticipantI’ll be damned. I finally checked the site, and it is pretty cool. Statistics normally “frighten and confuse me”, but I like the way you put it together. Good jorb. 🙂
Thanks. (where’s the smiley for “blush”?)
Until a couple of minutes ago, I didn’t really show any statistics, but I (a) had a vision and (b) needed something that started with “S”.
I just did a “Greatest Averages Evar”, so now there are honest to goodness statistics.
If anyone has anything else they’d like to see, just post your ideas. Eventually, I will be doing a Farktographer-specific report presenting a bunch of lies about individual Farktographers, but that’s a bit off.

Participanthahahahahahaaaaaa schnee – just noticed the acronym for the Farktog Stats Manager.
/lovin’ the noodly appendage.
I may have offended the Appendage. Electrical power to SchneeWorld Corporate HQ was disrupted last night due to a massive thundertorm blowing though Austin TX. It still hasn’t been restored.
What’s the pennance? 5 Ramen’s and 12 Holy Spaghetti’s?

ParticipantOn the plus side, we did pickup 36 farktographers that we’ve never seen before, and crossed the 2000 threshold for total number of unique farktographers who have ever participated. 93 distinct farktographers picked up at least one vote, and it made the Greatest Contests Recently list.
All this and more at the re-skinned Farktography Statistics Manager

ParticipantThat really sounds like the only option at this point; I don’t think there’s any other way to deal with this that would be fair for all involved. I think it’ll be neat if the Photoshoppers pull from all the entries, and I’ll be interested to see what they come up with.
Hopefully we can get it done in a manner that will give the ‘shoppers source material that they can work with and won’t hurt any feelings.
[xnipped good comments about moderation]
Moderating would be hard work for the modmins – one of ‘us’ would have to be involved (probably more than one) and it would just get confusing.
The “off-theme” posts were especially noticable this time, and sort of damaging to the theme due to the follow-on photoshopping.
Regarding this contest, mistakes were made and lessons were learned, but we all got to see some nifty photos. Next time, the cross-over theme will much more specific.
