ParticipantU-Man, ‘grats on the 150+ vote contest this week! Yeebus!
I said in my comment on page one, I like this style. It makes sense in my brain. However, I didn’t expect 150+ votes!
I liked a bunch this week. I want to try Elsinore’s snow drift this winter – just beautiful. soosh is just soosh. 🙂 Both shots up the spiral staircase were great. Monsieurstabby’s fit the theme better. I’ve said before that I like what the world looks like through a viewfinder. This theme totally fits that. You can find interesting, beautiful stuff all over the place.
Change of topic. Did anybody else see http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=tracy+raver+photography&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=&aqi= on the yahoo home page? Makes me want to borrow a newborn (’cause me and the missus are NOT having another 🙂 )

ParticipantMan, soosh, I really like that series.

ParticipantHey we should have done something about “9” today.
U-Man
ParticipantWell, I like them. 🙂 Here’s the probable B-sides.
goddammit – I need to turn off my damn e-mail alert and get some work done.

ParticipantCD – I don’t have the time I’d like for this but…
I agree with Kat. While I like lens flare, it should brobably be avoided in this theme. Pick one of the simple, clean pics and crop it like you want. Perhaps play with light/dark or contrast to make it pop more.
btw – if you don’t have a 2nd or 3rd choice, you could submit one with a blue sky and also the earlier cloudy one. Just a thought.
I’m struggling with my choices this week.
U-Man
Participantin opposition to U-Man, I think partial cloudiness would detract more than the pretty much uniform color you have right now.
What you talkin’ ’bout Willis? I said, “all blue or all white or all gray”. We agree.
btw soosh, I snickered that the raindrops pic bugged you. It made me want to post more. 🙂

ParticipantClouddancer, you already have something that works. I like the clothesline pic. I agree that it isn’t perfect – but you can’t control the clouds and it is certainly good enough to enter. Is it in your back yard right now? Can you go try again? Can you put it in front of all blue or all white or all gray? Perhaps try a different shot with the post and the lines parallel to the photo borders and then cram it all into one corner. What about hanging one baby sock from it? With just the lines and a sock in the frame?
U-Man
ParticipantOh yeah. That bit about being on one side or the other. I plan on using three different levels of minimalism and see what works.
U-Man
Participantsoosh, I agree with NBD. I’ll have to try the milk jug thing.
Justkat, you and I are on the same page. I think one of the issues with this form of art is that folks have different bullshit thresholds. When I see a minimalist painting with just a black line on white background my BS alarm goes off. Yet I think that this works – http://www.flickr.com/photos/bbaadd/2592988084/ . I’m sure that some folks would look at the raindrops and not “get it”.
U-Man
ParticipantSomewhat interesting. http://www.tabletopstudio.com/documents/glass_photography.htm

ParticipantIt’s definitely been fun though, and I hope this contest is a hit.
U-Man, do you have a light box? I’d start there, and maybe add a sheer cloth on top to make it more diffuse. Then start moving lights around so they don’t reflect :/
Firstly – I agree.
Secondly – Yeah, I have a light box. I actually started out with the bulb there – http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Bulb_4998.jpg – and didn’t like the reflection. I wanted it cleaner. That’s what caused me to try a black version.duh – I haven’t even tried a Google search…

ParticipantA while back (a year or two), one of you technically savvy farkers had a post about how you got a photo of a wine glass with a black background and no flash-spots on the glass. The flash was hidden away and bounced somehow. Well, I just tried this – http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Bulb_5200.jpg – for the minimalism theme and am unsatisfied because of the lighting. The bulb is on black cloth that gently curves up to where I tacked it to the wall. I hand held a flash from the side to illuminate the bulb but had cardboard baffles to cast shadow on my backdrop as well as just beneath the bulb.
Oh – and the bulb is on a piece of glass. That’s how the reflection got there.
Anyway, can anybody point me to that thread. Was is schnee? Or morningbreath? Bobroberts?

ParticipantSomething like this perhaps? Would this fit the bill?
Let me preface this by stating that I’m not an art critic and don’t really know wtf I’m talking about. 🙂 That said, let me critique your work like I know wtf I’m talking about.
Your pic doesn’t say minimalism to me. I know you took it with simplicity in mind, but there is still too much going on. The little flecks of grass or debris are distracting to my eye. Although I can think of exceptions, it is somewhat helpful to think of this style as really clean. Nothing unnecessary should be in there.
Taken to the extreme, this style makes me go, “Huh? That is art?” I’m trying to stay juuuust on this side of saying that this week. I may have crossed over on one.
Earlier today, I walked down to the ‘frog pond’ at a nearby church to try those leaf pics. I found a tiny muddy puddle covered in algae and junk. So I walked back home and pondered. I finally took the kids tiny play billiards table out into the back yard, covered it with a black garbage bag and filled it with the hose. I then spend 30-40 minutes floating stuff on it. As with many of my pics, I created as I went along and finished with something quite different that I started. I am really happy with one of them. I don’t know if it is minimalism or not. But I really like it.

ParticipantClouddancer, I second Uranus’s idea. I googled ‘minimalist photography’ and wound up someplace in Flickr that had page after page of pics. They were inspiring. Well, they were inspiring to me because I like this stuff.
Mine from past contests that could fit this theme.

http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Snow-Leaf_6805a.jpg
http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Winter-Reeds_7106-a.jpg
etc.I guess my input (in words) would be go simple. Pick one subject and get anything else that could be distracting out of the frame. As an example, my Tree-Slope pic above would be a better mimimalist photo if there were no ski tracks in the snow and no clouds in the sky.
I like this photog’s series of leaves and I plan on trying some in about 20 minutes.
U-Man
ParticipantI don’t know if I should get ‘credit’ for this theme but, man, I like this style.
btw – I’d be cool if the classics went without a credit tag. But it really doesn’t matter that much.
