Hey, does the photo have to include the entire utility pole to ‘prove’ that it isn’t a lightpost or something? I was out New Years day and got some shots – in 10 degree F, 30 mph winds weather. Brrr. On some of them, the shots I got that exclude the top of the pole are better than the wider angle ones.

I suppose I could link to a wider angle photo of the same scene. Or is the honor system good enough?

I guess I’d have to ask whether you could tell from your photo without a lengthy explanation that you had photographed a “heavy” metal and/or if by looking at the photo the average person would think it was illustrative of “heavy”. Beyond that, I can’t answer, particularly without looking at an example. Perhaps Silver Stag could weigh in since this was his theme suggestion.

Heh, heh, heh…Silver Stag could weigh in…

Good contest.. some people REALLY nailed it…others, not-so-much…

I can’t believe corsec’s lighter didn’t win… that was a perfect example of what the theme was… pictures of flowers… the sky….etc… are things that EVERYONE thinks is beautiful… the point of the contest (for me) was to find beauty in something that NOT EVERYONE THINKS IS BEAUTIFUL!!! OH well, win some, lose some… I still voted across the board… even if I didn’t find it in theme, if i liked the pic, I voted.

some of my favs were: corsec, u-man, sleeping, futhermucker, and did I mention corsec, and U-man? 😉

I also really liked sclark’s crappy old faucet… nice.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh……

I just got back from my folks place out in the woods of the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Although the high speed satellite connection is on the way, they still have dial-up at a blistering 19.2 kbps. I had to drive into town and park in the Best Western lot and borrow their wireless just to post my pics. I’m home and feel like an addict who has been cut off for a week and then scores. Mmmmm…cable internets….

MrBob, thanks for the kind words. I also perceived this contest as pics of something not ordinarily recognized as beautiful. Perhaps in five or six months we could do one that has this specific wording in the theme. It would be a good excercise for all of us.

As a total aside, I think that Kraften’s other one (railroad spikes) would have received more than a few votes. I was bummed when I saw it, went to the upper right and found no vote box.

Another aside – So I’m up in the woods with all of this beautiful snow and nature and old tractors and stuff. Got my camera stuff ready…and nearly the whole time I’m there, it is cloudy with sucky flat light. Of course, as we’re driving out of town, the sun broke though and the entire world was sparkling. 😕

Corsec67, I also think that your photo fits the theme perfectly.

When I was thinking of this theme, I initially wanted to get folks to see beauty in things not usually recognized as beautiful. However, in my opinion, a simple photo of a flower is OK too. I think that MrBob’s tree-grass-blue sky photo nicely meets the subjective criteria. One of the fun things about these contests is the various interpretations of the theme you all present. It makes me take a step back and say to myself, “Yeah…I didn’t think of that…cool”.

Mods, sorry about the Autumn re-post. I really and truely looked at the FSM page to see if it was a duplicate. I just didn’t look closely.

Tell me something. Did I try to post that pic twice tonight? And you had to give it the nix twice? It has been one of those evenings where I can’t remember what I did 5 minutes ago. The 1-year-old is all cranky with a 103 (39.4) fever and an ear ache the older girls have homework, blah..blah…

Looks like this is going to be a big thread. Good stuff so far.

That tone mapped image is very un-meh. I can look online tonight (after work) – but does anyone have a tone mapping tutorial that they would like to share?

/Not looking to delegate the research, just looking for input.
//OK. I’m looking to delegate the research a little.

So I tried to do this HDR thing for the first time this weekend. It’s harder than it looks. Actually, it’s probably about as hard as it looks. So far, I’ve got crap and funny looking crap.

However, I reeeaaally like some of the images I’ve seen while researching the topic. It intrigues the artistic side of me as well as the geeky me.

chakalakasp, I enjoyed the slap down you put on that Pete Carr guy in the comments section or your article. I will say though, I kinda like the unrealistic look to some of his stuff. Sort of a painting/photo hybrid. Evidently, galleries all over Liverpool do too. (haughty pyup, pyup, pyup…)

I’ll keep working at it. Again, thanks to Farktography in general (and especially the Mods) for pushing me out of the house with camera in hand. It is highly unlikely that I would even know what HDR is without you guys; let alone try to do it.

    Elsinore,

Oh yeah. That whole category that says THEMES. It just poked me in the eye.

Feels dumb. Goes back to work….

Hey guys (and gals), I know this is not the right spot for this question but I figured it would be noticed here.

Every once in a while, I’ll have an idea for a theme. I then look for a place to share it, can’t figure it out and then forget what my idea was. Where could I post suggestions?

By the way, I just dropped $20 at the Dollar General and got…20 things. It was a pretty safe investment because almost everything came from the toy section. If they don’t end up on farktography the kids will enjoy them.

Another thing. Thanks to whoever started this farktography thing and thanks to the moderators for keeping it going. With life going a million miles an hour it is all too easy to leave the camera in the bag. Farktography gets me behind a lens and helps me notice the beautiful things in this world.

    Analogy,

Now that’s an answer that I can sink my teeth into. Thanks. The image is 1922 x 624 pixels. By your 72 ppi limit, that would make it 27ish inches long. The photo content would stand up well to some loss of sharpness as it is a hazy sunrize over water. I just might try it with some matting to fill out the dimensions.

Hi Guys (and gals), as you know, I’m new to this Farktography thing. I am very much an amateur photographer and, as such, know next to nothing about “style”. The only name that I recognized from idle_hands’ list was Ansel Adams. While I mainly take snapshots of my girls and their cousins, I will intermittently venture out into the world with my camera to take ‘artsy’ pictures. I like the way the world looks through the lens. I get that “wow, that’s a beautiful rusty nail” feeling.

But style! I’ve got no style that isn’t my own. Do you think it would be OK to submit a few pics that reflect my style (whatever that is) without having them based on another’s work? Or should I just hold on to them until they fit another weeks’ topic?

By the way, this is alot of fun. As with many people, I’m busier than I should be and find it rewarding to think and do something that isn’t work or family.
