ParticipantSo imagine you’re just rolling along through life, and then one day you open your email one day to find a release form for one of your photos to be included in an upcoming “best of” Farktography book. You send off an email to a good friend (someone who was one of the pioneers and was involved in the project before you – someone who was a moderator with you, someone whose work you admire and whose welcoming attitude really inspired you to be part of the community) and find that they had 0 photos selected for the project.
So you start looking into exactly what what chosen as the “best of” Farktography and you notice that 2 people had a combined total of over 40 photos selected and your thoughts go back to your friend…
Then you poke around some more and find that another good friend, someone whose work and resources provided the foundation for us to have the forum we’re writing on today, wasn’t given any credit for what he did for the community, and that recognition was attributed incorrectly elsewhere.
After absorbing all of the above I decided to ask questions about the selection process and about where the information for the history section had come from so I wrote to Kestrana and Elsinore.
I have been gone from this community for a long time have moved on from this project, so I had no idea there was going to be a book until I got my release form. I hesitated to even say anything considering the length of my absence but yes, I would not have gone in the themes direction because I do believe it’s unfair for so few to be so broadly represented. It’s not a sentiment personally directed at anyone; if the theme selections had gone differently and it had been me who had received a seemingly disproportionate number of release forms I would have stopped at three and given up the rest so others could share the limelight simply because that appeals to my sense of fairness. I’ve said and thought the same thing over and over again: if the rules of Farktography have always been no more than three submissions per person per contest, why would the book be any different?
However, shortly after I wrote Kestrana she wrote back and answered my questions, and after I finish this post I’ll be writing back to her again. I understand now how things have come to pass. I still don’t agree with the chosen method but the majority has spoken and I can accept that. But I won’t apologize for asking the questions; just because I didn’t agree with the majority doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to voice my thoughts.
Given all that, it wasn’t my intent to upset her, and especially since I took enough lumps during my time modding Farktography to the point where it wasn’t fun anymore and it eventually led to my leaving the community entirely. It is tough being in a position where you’re the most visible one fielding the questions and problems.
So if you want to hurl insults in my (now not anonymous) direction at least do it understanding where the voice is dissension is coming from.
At this point, just slap them in the face and stare at them in a way that lets them know if do anything but apologize then hide for the next 12 hours you’ll beat them with looped up coaxial cable. That’s what my Mom would do!
Bring it, staplerboy 😛 I’ve been in IT for years and my coax wielding Kung Fu is strong. I’ll try not to leave the welts in openly visible places though, because that’s what MY mom would do.

ParticipantI don’t think in last year’s contest we had any hard and fast rule about new photos being unacceptable. This is the one contest per year which allows repeats so that was the focus – but for those new to Farktography I say bring your best!

Adding this to the description in the boobies.

ParticipantIf I recall correctly (insert joke here) this one was one of Elsinore’s suggested contests so the questions regarding pets/self portraits would probably best be defined by her. Whatcha think E?

ParticipantAnyway, I promise to not be a doodiehead next time 🙂
You weren’t a doodiehead this time IMO. Like others have alluded to and said before me, farktography (hell, photography) is such a subjective art form. That and mix the FARK crowd in and you never know what the outcome will be.
Your interpretation was perfectly fine from my perspective. Pre-congrats on what looks like a win in your favor.

Participantbut seriously folks, why does it matter when it’s “called”? the FSM will have the totals at some point and if we have to wait a day or two to post the winning photos ……… ok we wait. how many page hits does our winners page get? i’d bet my lunch money that most folks look at the fark “view votes” thing, not our page. our page is real nice and easy for checking at a later date because it’s easy to find. however those that entered can see their standing at fark in real time. and if you’re like me and finish 23rd fark can be easier to see who finished above and below you.
“back in the day…” there was no fsm. the 24 (or reading back, 23) hour rule was imposed about a year ago last january for a specific reason having to do with vote counts possibly being thrown. i don’t believe (and correct me if i’m wrong schnee) that the fsm was created for official tracking purposes. it’s an independent 3rd party website created by a farktography enthusiast for supplemental reference.
basically for me, the one who updates the site, it would be nice to know when the results are final if we’re going to revamp the way things are done. unless we’re talking about pitching the idea of updating this site and using only the fsm for contest reference?

Participantyeah, i think if we wanted to archive it immediately after you call it we’d have to set it up all special-like with drew and the admins.
i wonder how much Heineken that would cost… 😛

Participantsee, i prefer the fission method. one farktographer enters, two leave.
i’m good either way – whether we want to call it at the official farktog call time or just let the chips fall where they may once the voting is done….i wonder if there is a way to archive the thread ~24 hours after the start via fark so there would be no more voting after veruca calls it?
that’s dependent on fark and the way their archiving is handled. i know they archive eventually but i’m not sure how long afterwards. a week? a month?
my method isn’t a perfect science either. contests which have hit the front page in the middle of the night haven’t necessarily been scraped at 24 hours because i’m in coma land.
should we take another look at how contests are called? run a poll? anyone have a better idea?

ParticipantI’d say that the FSM is the main arbiter of who gets the ultimate victory.
Actually this brings up a good point. A long time ago (I’d have to look up the thread) there was a mod discussion about when the contests should be called and a winner declared. We settled on 24 hours from when the contest hit the front page. That’s when I check the thread and scrape the results.
So technically 24 hours after this contest when I called it ‘bort was this week’s winner. No offense to you millera9, of course. We should probably post this in the rules for clarification though for times like these where the order changes after the contest is “officially” over.

ParticipantWell, I had to unexpectedly check out early last night so I missed most of the contest, but wow – lots and lots of good stuff. I was going to comment on your Grandmother image E – it’s lovely. I was going to make lots of comments but didn’t end up making it back in time. Doh!
