Aaaaand, I’m looking for some advice for #3 as well.
Zero E – thanks, I’m gonna use the soup cans – http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Warhol—scan0010.jpg
But for #3 I’m stuck between this one –
http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/BandW-bus-0006-l.jpg
http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/BandW-bus-0006-lb.jpg (big)This has a deeper meaning with the yellow school bus thing. But I couldn’t really get what I wanted for a moonlit night everything-is-in-b&w type image.
Then there’s this one which is OK but will likely be one of many like it —

I think I have a LIDE scanner in a drawer someplace. Do you want it (assuming I can find it)?
I’m sure that Kestrana might hurt me if I say yes….. Thanks, but I’ll just look for one at a thrift shop whenever we get settled into wherever my next job takes us.
June 8, 2011 at 3:59 am #38092CuriousParticipantAnd, of course, the six or so scanners that have been sitting on the shelf at goodwill since the beginning of time all disappeared while we were in VA.
our “good” goodwill store was flooded in katrina. the new one has crap for electronics. and the salvation army store is gone completely.
there was a hudson’s in waveland pre katrina that had left over radio shack stuff cheap. that whole shopping center never reopened. and the hudson’s in gulfport is crappy now too.
i’m guessing a lot of old electronics that was in folks attics and used to go to goodwill, the salvation army, etc got wiped out in katrina. the selection since is bad.
June 8, 2011 at 4:21 am #38091CauseISaidSoParticipantrav, I agree with U-Man; personally, I like the memorabilia better, but I think the beer spill will get more votes.
U-Man, I think the bus will do well because as you imply, it’s unusual. Although having tried scanning my face a couple of times, I can certainly appreciate the effort and timing it took to get that other shot. 🙂
June 8, 2011 at 5:18 am #38090ravnosticParticipantI agree, U-ey and CISS, on the vote factor. Maybe I’ll post a non-vote image with a link with the story (it’s been told before;; I won’t have to type much).
But really–I can’t stress enough how important it is to back up your pictures or whatever you possibly can in any way fathomable in a location other than what you are living within.

June 8, 2011 at 9:29 pm #38088Plamadude30kParticipantHey, guys, I wanted to ask about some edits to an entry before the contest. I was pretty edit-light this week, but one of my entries was a bit messy, and left little bits on the scan surface, most of which I cleared away (operative word being most). I didn’t notice one particular bit, which showed up in my last entry when I was editing it today. I can’t really crop it out, but it doesn’t intersect with any of the 3-d subject, it’s just on a blank white background. Is it alright if I remove it?
June 8, 2011 at 9:40 pm #38087ravnosticParticipantPlama, I quote: “Stray hairs falling over your model’s alabaster face? Fix these. That’s cool.”
So I think you’re good. God knows, as clean as I could get the scanner, it was inevitable that one or two of Blert’s fur hair fell upon the surface of most every scan either before, or during, the scanning process. I removed them. If I’m wrong on this, now’s the time to say so. (And I hope I’m not wrong, as I did the fur data deleting before the processing part, I’ll be stressing to get it all done again before the contest, and then my shift.)
What I found most curious was regardless of what lighting I used (LED, incandescent, flourescent), whenever the image didn’t have something right up to the surface, the ‘background’ (either a whiteboard held above, or the ceiling) always had a rose-colored tint to it. Which worked well for one shot, at least. The other thing was the CA was really evident–though not so much at 640 pixels, it shows up quite a bit in the biggun’ sized images.
June 8, 2011 at 9:41 pm #38086orionidParticipantIf it falls into the dust/dirt category, then there’s no problem, but if it’s significant (like a paperclip or something) then it’s probably beyond the scope.
June 8, 2011 at 10:04 pm #38085CuriousParticipantwell i have three. tried using the lid scanner (it’s a full width scanner for medium format film) but that didn’t work like i’d hoped. so reflective it is.
But really–I can’t stress enough how important it is to back up your pictures or whatever you possibly can in any way fathomable in a location other than what you are living within.
learned that the hard way with katrina. thought i’d left photos in a safe place (they were actually in a safe) but the supports collapsed and water got to them. probably 80% had at least some damage. those got scanned after the fact. 20% were not salvageable. all my stuff is now on two external HDDs so i can grab one in the event of having to evacuate. fire is another story. i probably should put one in the fire safe and just get it out for periodic backups.
trying to get VA beneifts a few years after katrina proved tricky too since a lot of paperwork was damaged when the photos were. fortunately they took the damaged discharge papers and my undamaged DD217N which had been in my wallet.
June 8, 2011 at 10:13 pm #38084ravnosticParticipantCurious; the primary reason I keep my domain with godaddy isn’t for the webpage (which I never update); it’s for the mega amounts of storage where I keep any pictures I’ve taken that I simply would hate to lose. That and document copies, etc. Their servers are located in Dallas and Chandler, Az, so even if one of them goes out, the data is still saved. It’s a good feeling. Now that I have a scanner, I’ll want to convert all my non-essential, but still nice photos and get them uploaded, too. For $60, it’s a damned fine scanner, with up to 4800 dpi (though the table is only 8.5×11, which is kinda small). I may rescan everything previously scanned at lower res, even. Every once and a while Godaddy emails me a 30% off code, and I’ve used that to keep extending out the hosting site, for which I think I’m out to about 2016 now.

Scans can stitch together just like panoramic photos. It’s actually easier because there’s no parallax error.

Hey, that’s actually an excellent point. Cool.
June 8, 2011 at 10:28 pm #38081ravnosticParticipantI thought about that, sleeping, which is why I wasn’t too worried.
