I doubt it would be baleeted from here,(esp w/out a pm from a mod) so repost.
I felt like it last night. Tonight…not so much. Maybe as a B-side tomorrow. Plus it’s bed time.
October 7, 2009 at 5:42 am #24370olavfParticipantshoot. that reminds me that I actually have to decide on what pics to use 😛
October 7, 2009 at 7:27 pm #24371CuriousParticipantI have been thinking about getting some lights to use with props and stuff, but I’ve no idea what I’m looking for. What I originally wanted was this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/cameras-photography/a205/
take a look at this one. http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Concepts-Ps-101-Portable-Lighting/dp/B000FBF400
it has blue and gray backgrounds (they flip over) or you can use whatever you want. it’s small at 17″ tall but fine for a lot of stuff. you can add light at the top if needed since the top is the same material as the sides. another plus is that it folds up into its own carry bag and there are pockets for the lights and tripod.
i have one and while it’s not the same as several hundred dollars in umbrellas and strobes ….. well you get what you pay for. it really is good for small stuff.
October 7, 2009 at 7:34 pm #24372olavfParticipantFor the small stuff, we use a home-built kit made from PVC tubing and drop-ceiling fluorescent panels. We use the lights from our set, but I’ve seen them used with shop-lights (halogen or incandescent) also. The only disadvantage is that it’s not portable, but when I build MKII I’ll probably design that in somehow.
October 7, 2009 at 7:35 pm #24373CuriousParticipantwell for tonight i’m going to have to rely on desaturate. turns out my latest camera won’t do B/W 🙁
and yes, i’ve had the camera for 3 years and am just finding that out.
October 7, 2009 at 8:04 pm #24374clouddancerParticipantI chose to not go with Hubby and his moodiness. For practice I took a few pictures of my son too. I decided to post those B-sides (the good ones) on my blog (should be my www link). Hubby and Friend both commented that the camera seems to do really well with B&W shots. It could be that I’m getting better at it, but that remains to be seen.
I played with some macro photography a bit too (also on blog). I tacked up a tablecloth to the wall and let it drape down so it also covered a TV tray. I had an overhead white light on and for some extra lighting I borrowed Friend’s flashlight, which is adjustable and has decent output. We could build our own little studio thing, my only problem is lighting. I’m really not sure what I should look for in lamps or stands or output or anything. I’ll have to make do with what I have though because we’re tight on money for a while. It’s one thing to look online at said things, but it’s another to see them in person. I’ll have to head out to HD or a local photo place to see what’s available. We also don’t have much room in the house either to store said items so unless we figure out a spot to place everything it’ll still have to wait. We have a REALLY small house (it’s smaller than a trailer).
We have cloth up the wazoo so making different background colors isn’t all that difficult.

I have one too, the box is great. The lights are pretty weak. You will definitely need better lights.

Usually you are better off converting from color. Why throw away all the information contained in the color image?
October 7, 2009 at 9:35 pm #24377ElsinoreKeymasterU-Man: Not sure what happened to your post, but I never saw it (in fact I haven’t been on the site in a few days 😳 ). I can’t see any of us deleting a post here unless it was outright porn or something. Bugs, staplers and Barbies notwithstanding 😉 Sorry about the post, though.
Also, I guess we should add a note tonight about obvious color toning (sepia, whatever) since the consensus was about grayscale/true b/w?
October 7, 2009 at 9:51 pm #24378olavfParticipantMy vote is to keep it B&W/grayscale, and maybe do a color-toned contest down the road.
In fact, something along the lines of a ‘Great-Grandma’s Photos’ contest sounds fun – take an old-timey looking photo.
October 7, 2009 at 10:03 pm #24379ElsinoreKeymaster‘kay we’ll add a note. If it’s very obvious color toning, it won’t fly. If it’s more subtle, we’ll have to make some allowances for different monitors and whatnot.
October 7, 2009 at 10:19 pm #24380orionidParticipantHoly crap. The contest is tonight. I hate my shiftwork schedule.
/Off to toy with one idea, then to the archives!

you’re talking to a guy who broke his photography teeth on Tri-X. and then spent a couple of years in a (mostly) B/W darkroom.
i don’t think in digital. to me a B/W setting on the camera means it captures gray scale like film, not that some software in the camera does a conversion.
yeah i should know better and when i really stop and think about it .. ok, we found the problem.
October 7, 2009 at 10:43 pm #24382eire_irieParticipantHi guys..anyone here? Is the pic width still 640? I thought I saw something in the PS fourm about it being 600
