Sounds like you’ve got the right attitude for it. Ya gotta do what you gotta do and the work side will help pay the bills until the creative/fun side is able to take its place. Just don’t let the work side bleed into or take away from the creative side. Like chupa said, keep that creative fire/desire alive.

Any chance they’ll let you hand out business cards for your creative stuff as part of your other duties?

“Inanimate” obviously excludes people/animals (and they’re also explicitly excluded), but on what side do trees/foliage fall?

Barracuda, inanimate can mean “not animated”, as in motionless, but it’s also used to mean lifeless. Trees/foliage are one of those but not the other, so what was your intent? I can work with either definition, just need to know which one.

Sleet?! Yikes! We dropped back down to the 40’s today, but no sleet thankfully.

And thanks again Els and everyone who voted. Congrats also to ennuipoet on his combined win.

This was the win that almost wasn’t an entry. While setting up that shot, I took two test shots and then decided that it’d be better if there were another couple of pieces of bacon that rose higher next to the yolk (I wanted it to be the Cholesterol Mountains, not Hills). Bacon is surprisingly not a very cooperative subject to pose and while trying to add a couple more pieces, I brushed the yolk sac which then split and ran down over everything. This was the second yolk at this point and I was playing with my breakfast (and hungry!), so I said, “Screw it – I’ll do all archives this week.” But when I reviewed this test shot, I said “Meh, close enough” and ran with it. And lest anyone labor under the humorously false assumption that I’m really that creative, you all should know that that entry (like a lot of my “posed” entries) was inspired by – well, maybe more like heavily borrowed from – ok, ok! blatantly stolen from something I saw elsewhere on the intertubes.

Woot! My first back-to-back. Y’all must know I had to check the stats on that. Turns out there have been 19 double back-to-backs and (surprise, surprise ;)) U-Man owns 8 of them. With one each, the others are by bobroberts, chakalakasp, Encyclopedia Galactica, kashari, kestrana, redwoodcruzr, schnee, SilverStag, soosh, and veruca. There have been 4 triples, one recently by Elsinore and the other 3 by U-Man. And there’s even been one quad by U-Man starting at contest #232, the first Software Hootenanny.

The more impressive stat is the double win, which has only been pulled off twice – once by U-Man in The Song Remains The Same and more recently by linguine in A Stitch In Time 2. Sorry, ‘guine, I should’ve pointed out your feat back then, but I think I was pretty wrapped up in a project during that time and didn’t notice until now.

So I can’t promise I’ll be able to post the thread congrats Saturday evening/night.

Els, I hope I wasn’t too presumptuous, but I happened to be working late tonight and saw that you were obviously off the grid, so I stepped in with the closing post. Really just wanted to acknowledge the newbs & kotters & link to next week’s theme, but in retrospect, I probably should’ve made sure you were cool with it first.

If you’re going to be addicted to something, photography is a good choice. I think heroin might be cheaper, though. 😉 Anyway, welcome! What sorts of photos do you find interest you the most? I’m more of a landscape/still life kinda guy myself and not much into portraiture.

Nice shots. The first one has a bit of an ominous, desolate feel to me. And congrats on regaining that feeling.

I’m with ‘Cuda, though – You can keep the snow. As I mentioned in the other thread, it was a beautiful 80 degrees today and I’m ready for more of it!

re: Venison – some friends of ours hunt quite a bit and he makes what he calls poppers. They’re seasoned venison strips wrapped around jalapenos and cheese and they’re delicious.

I’d hate to see all terrestrial elements banned. Sometimes a small foreground silhouette lends a lot of interest to astronomy shots. Maybe specify a percentage that has to be starfield? Just my opinion…

Have fun and stay safe & warm! I don’t know if you’re having the weather we are, but it was 80 beautiful degrees here today. Perhaps that’s heading your way in a day or two.

Yep, I clicked on a link about the comet on CNN yesterday, which took me to spaceweather.com, which had a whole smorgasbord of comet shots and right there on the top row was a name I recognized. So I knew there’d be more to come. Congrats, rav – nice captures on both days.

I took my camera & tripod with me this evening in hopes of finishing up my DIY project in time to attempt some shots tonight, but failed to finish in time. Maybe tomorrow night…

orionid, I know that wasn’t just for me, but for the small part that maybe was, let me say that I appreciate knowing that. That’s one of the things I dislike most about this form of communication – without vocal inflections & facial cues, it can sometimes be tough to judge true meaning and I was concerned that you were truly upset. So, all is well again. Awesome.

That’s pretty cool. That last one evokes Tim Burton to me for some reason – anybody else get that?

Also, is that the same droste effect you used previously for your “infinite scream”?

No biggie, Pope. It’s kind of a pain to delete an entry post-contest so unless anyone else has any objections, I’ll let it slide. After I discovered several months ago that a flickr link can vary by the last couple of letters (which designate its size) and still be the same shot, I found another 40 or 50 dupes in the database that haven’t been removed, so you’ve got plenty of company. Thanks for your honesty, though.

fluffy, after rereading my last post, I feel like I may not have fully expressed my thought correctly, so just to be sure – that was meant as nothing but a compliment. My wife’s initial comment arose from the fact that she knew it was a software manipulation contest and you did such a great & realistic job that she couldn’t at first tell that it was anything other than a plain photo.
