Yeah, you’re right, Els; it will be a lower burden of proof. I did get some photos, but it was near dusk and they’re with my cell phone. I think they’ll still tell my story, but I really really wish I’d thought to bring my SLR. When he called, we rushed out without really thinking about the need to grab documentation tools. My insurance agent did say that if we succeeded in getting the ticket reversed that would help our case. Regardless, everyone’s OK and that’s the important part; the rest is just money and that comes and goes.

    Yikes, is your kiddo ok??

Yep, he’s fine, and so are the other two who hit him. The problem is that there were no witnesses and it’s he said/she said and the other driver is claiming that my son pulled out in front of him.

My son claims that he was just sitting there and the other kid (he’s only 17 as well) tried to pull into the street my son was on too fast. I questioned him several times and that’s the story he’s sticking to, so I believe him. Also, the position of the cars post-impact and the location of debris seem to strongly verify his story.

The cop that came to investigate chose to believe the other guy, though, so we’ll have to fight it in court. I even pulled the “I’ve got a degree in physics and know a few things about conservation of momentum and force vectors” but it didn’t sway her and she ticketed my son. Court’s in a couple of weeks, so we’ll see if the judge will buy it. I’ve just got to prove reasonable doubt, right?

Going to be out a lot of tomorrow between school commitments and a charity show. Between 8am and 10pm, I’ll mostly be gone, save for a window around 2-4pm, so if there’s something that needs immediate attention during those times, it might be faster to send a Farkback. I’ll be around off and on tonight, though.

And that is why kids are for young people. 😆 Don’t get me wrong, I loved the time with my kids, but I’m quite satisfied with the current situation as well – one graduating college in a couple of weeks (and off our payroll, yay!) and only one still at home. And he’s mobile so pretty much independent.

Although he did total his car last Friday. So, there’s that. Something to look forward to, Els! 😉

/ Ditto what fluffy said. You & Zeke are much appreciated.
// I just want to tell you both, good luck. We’re all counting on you.

That sounds like a definition of “sculpture” rather than “statue”, which I think pretty much implies a figure, i.e.:

A statue is a sculpture in the round representing one or more people or animals (including abstract concepts allegorically represented as people or animals), normally full-length, as opposed to a bust, and at least close to life-size, or larger.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue

It’s also a complete figure (as opposed to a bust or torso) and looks to be life-size or larger, which I read were other characteristics of statues.

Gee, I wonder where I read that? 🙄 Is it sad that I just now made that connection? Chalk it up to a senior moment, I guess. Anyone got a spare AARP application?

I have no experience with Pentax nor have I read anything about this model in particular other than the NewEgg description I just reviewed, but it sounds like a pretty decent deal. 12MP, full manual control, shooting in RAW, flash hotshoe – all of the critical components seem to be there.

The questions, then are 1) Do you have other lenses that will work with the camera? 2) If not, are you willing to invest in another set of lenses specifically for this body (or can you be satisfied with only the kit lens)? and 3) As Yoyo pointed out, even though the body itself is small, the lenses still make it not exactly pocket-sized, so would you actually use it?

If the answers to those questions are even a weak yes, I’d say you probably couldn’t go wrong for that price.

Congrats to Mitt Romneys Tax Return this week!

That’s a nice way to start a Farktography career, eh? And congrats also to linguine for the combined vote win. Lots of really good stuff this week and a not-quite-as-anemic voter turnout as well.

I should also add that the minimum participation requirements are calculated based on the later of your first contest or the quarter/year cutoff so as not to penalize newbs.

So, for example (and I suspect that this may be the source of your questions), the new guy, Mitt Romneys Tax Return, is eligible this week for quarterly and yearly averages because he’s participated in 100% of the contests for those periods, starting with his first. However, if he doesn’t participate next week, then his rate will drop to 50% and he’ll fall off of those reports. Also, he won’t show up on the overall lists until he racks up 50 entries.

Well, that depends on whether it’s an average or a total statistic, rav (look for the green asterisk). For the total or cumulative stats (e.g., most votes), I figured if the contestant can make the list with poor participation, then more power to ’em. It’s the averages that I didn’t want to see skewed by someone only participating when they’ve got a ringer for a particular theme.

What in particular are you seeing that you have questions about?

Nothing like shutting the barn door after the horse has already fled, but that’s typical government. At least they’re actually addressing it now.

Sorry dude, I assumed you caught the hoedown we threw in the other thread. Anyway, yeah, it’s cool, ain’t it?

Els, in addition to rav‘s above, here are a few other issues I saw:

    • vuprop‘s entry here appears to be a duplicate of his entry here in Stoned
    • thepostess‘s second entry appears to have been deleted at flickr
    • Kenny B and ruggernerd appear to have missed the whole “vertical” part of the contest

I don’t know, Barracuda; since both definitions include abstract representations, I still think you’re good to call it a statue. It’s also a complete figure (as opposed to a bust or torso) and looks to be life-size or larger, which I read were other characteristics of statues.
