Yeah, I agree with you both. They’re kinda cool to look at but I don’t think they have weekly appeal. The fun is in zooming in to see how many “pixels” you recognize and I don’t think anyone’s gonna bother downloading a 30-50MB image just for that.

If I stumble across a fairly easy way to do some kind of a deep zoom thing on the web, I might put up a couple every once in a while. BTW, the effort isn’t in the generation – I wrote an automated tool for it. I’ve just gotta point it at which thumbs to use for the pixel sources and which thumb to generate a mosaic for. So, I’ll leave everyone with one final for now. Here’s a colorful one from orionid from the Glass 2 theme that uses thumbnails from all contests since #200 (about 24,000 thumbnails).

Very close! They use Camp Billy Joe which is actually a short ways outside the park. I think it’s used as a youth camp during the summer.

That’s about 7 hrs from me, but it’s been on my list for a long time. It’s a long shot as far as availability for me, but if you’re interested in company, let me know when you start thinking about going.

Wow, how awesome for, and of, you to do that! So, two things I learned here:

    1) Between aspidites’ snow tigers and eagles and now your SA trip, never suggest another wild animal theme.
    2) Since I OBO’d for you, I can now say in a wild-stretch-of-the-truth kinda way that I helped build an orphanage in SA. At least, that’s the story I’ll be telling. 😉

My church did something similar in Uganda last year. This year it’s in Thailand for a girls’ shelter. One of these years my wife and I are going to make one of those trips (likely after the youngest is off to college).

I won’t pretend to know what you’re going through, ’cause I don’t, so just know that you have been missed here and we’re here and pulling for you.

The photographer in me says “Ooh, nice shots – pretty!” The allergy sufferer in me says, “Fark you, trees!”

Dangit, don’t say that! I almost almost made that one an A.

    Er, I mean, thanks! 🙂

I agree on both questions – ‘Cuda, your entry looks perfectly acceptable and Yugo, I like the B&W Buick better (it’s got more “character”).

Here’s a shot of Maggie, our Russel-mongrel mix for comparison… apparently the Corgi has similar coloring, but Mags has the typical medium wiry coat with a short soft undercoat.

Now THAT looks like Smokey (aside from the coloring) – the hair sprouts coming from the snout, the eyebrows, the beard, even the white stripe dividing her face.

Interesting, Yugoboy. I’m not that familiar with the breed so I always assumed Corgi but that would certainly explain Smokey’s more terrier look.

Bandit’s got the coloring, pronounced chest, and short stocky stature that I always associated with Corgi. She’s got long smooth hair (and lots of it; always shedding) whereas Smokey has short wirey hair that I associated more with a terrier.

Wow, that really reinforces my thoughts that Bandit must have a bit of Corgi in her:

She was just a normal rescue mutt, no specific breed. Her sister Smokey from the same litter looks nothing like her:

(Not the best shot of her, but the only one I have online and handy.) Smokey looks more Terrier while Bandit looks more Corgi.

    Anyway, cute pup!

Oh and a second place and an eighth just to fill in all the top ten places would be cool. 😆

I’ve been waiting for an 11th place to complete 1-31. For some reason, 11th is quite an elusive place. Only 40% of the contests since I started have even had an 11th.

Anyway, good luck on your quest. Next stop, a win!

    Thanks fluffy.

So, this contest marks the end of the first full quarter (12 contests) under the new voting system. Over this quarter the average # of entrants was 43, average # entries was 104, average total best votes was 1134, and average total funny votes was 215.

Those same numbers for the 4 previous quarters look like this:

    Qtr Entrants Entries Votes
    ---

    4 50 121 1670
    3 65 160 1854
    2 64 161 2078
    1 62 154 2126

I’m not sure we can attribute the entire drop to the new voting system, but I think it’s safe to say it surely didn’t help.
