ParticipantVery interesting, olavf. We eat a good deal of caprese here and the occasional burger, but I’ve never thought about combining the two…

ParticipantYou guys are my kinda guys! But I’m way ahead of ya. 🙂
Would either of you (or anyone else that browses this thread) be interested in an Excel 2007 spreadsheet showing some of the stats related to this that I’ve toyed with? It’d require either Excel 2007 (if you wanted to play with it yourself) or the Excel 2007 viewer (free from Microsoft).
It’s just got 8 contests in it, but I was playing with this very idea and graphing it versus entry counts and votes just to see what the data showed. It’s pretty interesting, if you’re into that sort of thing (which I know at least you two are).
As far as applying it to the website, I’m not sure yet just how much will make it there. It’d be a lot of work and I don’t really have a feel for how many hardcore stats brethren we have out there. At a minimum, I could include something that indicated a percentile, next to the place perhaps.
Here’s an example (from the Book of Armaments contest) of what I’ve got for each of the 8 contests in the spreadsheet:
- NVC vs Place – In this chart, the x-axis isn’t linear but rather shows the discrete places from the contest. NVC isn’t cumulative but shows the NVC required to obtain that place. What you can see from this chart is the delta NVC required to move from one place to the next. What I find really interesting is that it’s usually pretty linear until the top few places. In this particular example, you can see that there’s a huge jump required to go from 2nd to 1st.
- NVC vs NP – NP is Normalized Place or what you’ve called NRP, rav. In this chart, NVC is cumulative so 1st place is always at 1000 NVC. This gives you an idea of the distribution of votes and the relative “top-heavyness” of the contest. The flatter the curve, the more even the vote distribution (which could arguably be interpreted to mean the more competitive the contest). In this particular example, you can see that half of the votes (500 NVC) went to the top ~25% of entries.
- Total Votes vs Place – This is a pie chart showing the percentage of total votes that went to each group of places. In this example we see that 19% of the vote went to the top ten places.
- Total Votes vs NP – Same as the above except with NP. Here we see that 28% of the vote went to the top 10% of entries.
- Entry Counts vs Place – Same as above except with entry counts instead of total votes. This example shows that 14% of entries placed in the top 20.
- Entry Counts vs NP – Same as previous except with NP. This example shows that 11% of the entries placed in the top 10%.
- Compartive NVC vs NP – NVC vs NP for the 8 contests in the spreadsheet. You can see that Dirty Pictures was the least and Classical Elements the most evenly distributed.

ParticipantThanks Zero and zinc. That elongated house is a faux “guard shack” at the entrance to a neighborhood. That shot was one of the first I took after getting my dSLR and was actually a double rainbow (which you can see in my entry for Rain Rain Go Away if you’re interested).
Loved the abstractness and range of colors in yours, Zero, and I voted for all 3 of yours, zinc. And don’t shortchange yourself – that’s actually your 5th top ten. 😉
I was surprised by the low voter turnout this week, too, which is too bad considering the slew of great entries, I thought. But it was also pretty quiet around here, so I chalked it up to likely being vacation time for a lot of people.

ParticipantWow, lots of really beautiful shots there. And a couple of potential bokeh contest entries, too, I see.

ParticipantNice. Not a monsoon shot, but DSC_0050 desert view sunset small is easily my favorite.

ParticipantThanks everyone! Definitely another complete surprise.

ParticipantIn case anyone has an amazing memory or checks my posting history, the Arkansas River sunset is from the same set as a shot used in Waterscapes, but it’s a different frame.

ParticipantNew Feature Announcement
As I mentioned previously, I’m going to organize all of this as my next task, but since I haven’t done that yet, I’m posting this announcement here.
We now have a home page suitable for linking to in the contest boobies. Just use http://www.bibliostats.com. It should have enough info to get anyone started. It contains a link to the latest/active contest as well as “search” boxes to go to any contest or user page. (I put “search” in quotes, because it doesn’t actually search – you’ve got to know the exact contest # or username. It’s basically a shortcut for the URLs I posted previously.) I’ve also got the definitions of NVC and Sliding Quarter/Year.
And, since it was requested, a paypal donation button, which honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about. As I’ve said before, I’m really doing this for my entertainment; being able to share it with others who appreciate it is just a bonus. But some of you asked, so here it is. Anything donated will be used per U-Man‘s suggestion to take my wife to dinner. She’s practically been husband-less for a lot of the recent past. 😉
And let me state unequivocally that whether you do or don’t will have no bearing on our relationship, whatever that may be. If you can’t/don’t want to/don’t want to right now, we’re still good. The attaboy’s and other notes of appreciation here are just as valuable to me.
// Well, that was awkward…

Participant+1, but may I suggest an alternate title? ‘Nighty Night” to me implies sleep-related images; maybe something like “They only come out at night” or “Nighttime activities” or just plain “Night photography.” I don’t really feel strongly about it, and it is your theme, so of course you’re welcome to ignore that and keep your title as well. 🙂

ParticipantI will only know a few people and really don’t care to know the rest.
That’s why I didn’t bother with my reunion this year. The ones I wanted to know, I already do, for the most part; the others… well, there was a reason we didn’t keep in touch in the first place.
I’m also not an overly outgoing person (my wife would laugh and say that’s an understatement), but I was recently asked by my inlaws to take photos for their 50th anniversary party. It was a big gala with 100+ people, many of whom I didn’t know or barely knew. What I found is that when you walk around with a camera larger than a P&S, people tend to think you’re there officially or at least know what you’re doing and are happy to pose or ignore you while you take candids.
If social anxiety is a problem, tell yourself that you ARE the official photographer and use that to provide an isolation layer for professional objectivity.
As Yugoboy mentioned, some will want to see the pics, so plan ahead to have some way of sharing them. Other than that, just remember that you’ll likely never see most of these people again (aside from possibly the next reunion), so enjoy yourself. 😉

ParticipantThere should be a special thread in this forum dedicated solely to explaining NVC.
Right you are and there will be shortly. Right now I’m working toward getting the site ready for its public debut next contest. As soon as I’ve got that ready, I’m going to go through this forum and organize all of the past discussion into stickys and announcements.
And you’re welcome, kashari – glad you’re enjoying it!
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantYeah, I’ve been bothered with that since shortly after going live. I went as far as looking into it briefly, but decided major functionality was probably a higher priority than a nice-to-have. It is definitely on the to-do list, though.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantSure, Els, if it’s not a big deal. It might be helpful for others to find specific topics instead of having to search through this long-and-getting-longer thread.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantLOL! Sure, why not? I’ll even let you call me plasmaduke. 😉
