Well, best pay attention then, LeicaLens, ’cause there will be a quiz later. And did I mention I grade on a curve? (Always wanted to turn the tables on a teacher :))

But seriously, thanks for the thanks – glad to know I’m not the only one who finds it interesting. And I always get a chuckle out of y’alls use of maths (plural). Didn’t they teach you in Englishes class that it was singular? 😆

orionid: Very interesting. I suspect you’re right. Jack and Suzy see a theme they’ve got the perfect picture for and enter it, then let their friends and family know about it, who then end up voting for others as well. They then disappear into the sunset until the next perfect theme comes along. Or as the data seems to indicate, most of them disappear forever. I’ve got 5596 unique entrants in my database and only 411 of those have entered more than 10 contests and 3211 (57%) have entered only one.

I’ll add your ideas to my features list – thanks!

And finally, it looks to be safe to congratulate Elsinore, so congrats!

Blimey, it is a quiet one this week. I just cast my votes and was amazed to see how few votes some really great pictures had garnered.
    Lowest. Voting. Evah?

Not quite, but it’s looking to be in the lower 1/3. The lowest vote count ever was “Pinhole Camera” on 3-Dec-08 with 333 votes cast.

This contest is at 954 with a bit more than a day left. The average for the last 6 contests at this point in time is 1522, but there’ve been 70 contests with fewer than 954 total, including 5 this year:

I hear ya, loki. I’ve tried to get my wife, older kids, and friends to register & vote, but they generally just aren’t interested enough to bother.

You’ve got stats on votes by time? How cool! Is that just a cumulative thing, or can it be done per individual? That’s something I’d like to see.

It’s both, rav. I take a snapshot of the current page values every 15 minutes.

The sample graphs below are all real data from this contest, but right now I’m just exporting the data into Excel and using it to make the graphs. Eventually they’ll be dynamically generated on the website.

You’ve already seen this one. It’s the cumulative total votes (green background, in tens of votes) and the votes cast in any 15-minute period (blue columns):

Here’s the timeline of entrants (farktographers) and entries. Voted entrants/entries means they’ve received at least 1 vote.

Here’s the total vote graph for all contests since I started collecting data. The gray background is the average. You can see that the current contest is well below the average.

And finally, I think this is the one you’re looking for. I shoulda known as a self-identified math “geek” that you might be interested in this graph. It shows an individuals entries (in this case, mine) as they progress over the life of the contest. The positive values are the vote counts and the negative values are the place. I made the place negative so that the graph would have the “normal” view of up = better.

I’ve got contest-level detail starting from contest #286 and entry-level detail for all entries starting from contest #288.

What’s up with the voters this week? We’re a full 360 votes down from the last-6-weeks’ votes average for this point in time.

And orionid, how’d you do the vignetting in your Native Spirit? Is that a “feature” of the Holga or did you take specific action to create it? Either way, I really like it.

Just finished the last of mine. I’m using this week to practice new lighting techniques.

I used a gobo, bounce card and snoot in various combinations on all my shots and last week I couldn’t have told you what those were. 🙂 (Spent a little time on the strobist website recently.)

sleeping‘s response about reverse mounted lenses above suggests that putting one lens in front of the other like you describe no longer qualifies as a prime lens.

While it’s true that it’s not a prime, if all 3 shots were done the same way at the same focal length, that still qualifies, though, yes? I would think that’s the same as what us non-prime owners are doing – shooting 3 at the same focal length.

As my LCDs aren’t calibrated, I can safely say that I doubt I am seeing the same version of your shots as you 😆

Yeah, that occurred to me, too. But while the products I’m looking at don’t cover printer calibration, most of the reviews I’ve read said it also got them much closer and at least consistent.

Besides, it’d give me a good excuse for when I do poorly in the contests! Stupid farkers’ monitors aren’t calibrated properly, yeah, that’s the ticket. 🙂

I’m kinda leaning towards the Spyder 3 Pro or Elite. Mom-in-law is asking what I want for Christmas so maybe I’ll suggest that.

I’m not really familiar with the specifics of your references – are you suggesting that this would be something several of us could go in together and share via shipping?

If so, I’m not sure that would work for this one, unless it’s kept in pretty much constant rotation. Supposedly, you need to re-calibrate every few weeks or so as the monitor output changes as it ages.

Which version do you use? B&H shows three variants: ColorMunki Create/Design/Photo. Design & Photo are both $450 which I’m sure is worth it if that’s how you make your living but seems kinda pricey for non-professional work.

I don’t suppose you’ve heard anything about their HueyPro product?

Thanks, it’s easier to visualize actual size now. So the camera is more or less standard P&S size, but it looks like any kind of decent zoom still puts it out of “covert” territory?

This occurred to me today: There’s nothing in the description that says you have to submit any particular number of entries, just that they should all be shot with a prime/equal zoom. So technically, one could interpret that as a “submit a single shot of anything”, wide-open contest, right? That doesn’t seem to be in the spirit of the theme, so perhaps you want to specify a two-entry minimum in the description?

Not asking for myself – I’ll either be all in or all out.

Thanks, lokisbong. Your interpretation of Big Balls and War Pigs was pretty funny. I thought about trying to recreate the cover of Help! but gave up after considering the logistics of finding 4 identical blue ponchos and willing participants.

That is an interesting setup. Congrats on your bonus and new toy. I’m sure you’re loving being able to use all of your vintage glass with it.

I’d kinda like to see a shot of it beside something for size comparison. The lens really dwarfs the camera in that last pic.

Awesome job on the VH repro, U-Man! You might wanna get her to switch to lites, though – those reds are awfully harsh. 😆

While I’ve seen a handful of mine slide out of the top ten at the end, this is the first time I’ve ever had one slide up into the top ten at the last minute, so I’m pretty happy (and quite suprised) with that.
