    Got nuthin!

And by that I mean I really don’t have anything, i.e. I don’t think I have a stapler in the house.

The wife said she’d bring home a stapler from her office (official government-issued stapler, ooh la la) but has not yet delivered.

And anything I came up with at this late juncture would be an uninspired still life so I’ll be content to see what the other Farktographers and their twisted minds come up with and try try again next week.

    Rock on.

i don’t want to see it on some random website with no credit or compensation… if you don’t establish ownership of an image before someone uses it without permission, it’s really hard to prove that it is yours.

Yah but what’s the worst-case scenario here? Someone sells that photo and makes five bucks (sells it a lot and makes five hundred bucks?)?

Not worth clunking up an otherwise fine photograph IMHO.

Not to belabor the point, we can agree to disagree.

FWIW (and feel free to call me an asshat too) I don’t vote for pics with copyright thingies on them either. Maybe I’m way off base but I figure the little Fark contests are mostly amateurs and those with the copyright symbols are from people saying “my stuff is SO good and I’m so putting myself on the line just posting these pics for you mere mortals that I have to protect it or someone’s going to make a living printing and selling my 640×480 web images. Look but don’t touch.”

It’s a hint of pretentiousness I choose not to ‘reward’ with a vote. Same reason I don’t vote for black & white pics.

Got nuthin. Got less than nuthin.

Of course I didn’t even look to see what the theme was till 8PM Wednesday night, hardly enough time to start looking through the archives to see if I have anything relevant much less worthy of submission.

We’ll try try again next week.

Am hoping I got this one right. Looking through my photo collection I appear to be the anti-minimalist.
How’s everyone else doing this fine Wednesday evening?

I thought I had a whole bunch of nuthin for this one but found one that I think meets the theme. Now to sit and wait for Fark Freebie to let me play.

PS where in Central Mass? I was born and raised in Dalton, Mass (Berkshire County), also lived in Agawam (next to Springfield) and then North Adams before moving to Maryland a few years ago.

    Love cars!

Pictures look great to me, I’ve been pretending to be a motorsports photographer for a few years now (short track NASCAR stuff) but have always been a sports car person who did some autocrossing many years ago though I’m looking to get back into it this summer.

Anyway if I were to nitpick the pics you submitted the only real weak point I see is with the resizing/compression, the pics seem kinda jaggy and the colors aren’t always smooth, both probably a result of the processes to get the pics down to a manageable size. If you got the pics down to say 800×600 and kept the filesize around 100k they’d probably look a whole lot better.

I like the way you shot the event, though. Lots of angles, got both cars and people, gave a real good feel for the event. Saw some fuzzy shots, mostly those that were shot at the rear of the car as it was going away from you, and I can’t ever get those right either so I hardly ever try anymore.

Can’t give much advice hardware-wise. I had been using a 4-year old Olympus but that went belly-up this past fall so now I have a Nikon D100 to play with. I want to spring for a bigger lens than the 28-70mm that’s on it now but will wait till after the first chance I get to shoot at a track to decide what I need and how badly I need it.

PS loved the Elise! Gotta find out how to get my hands on one of those someday.

I hear ya Curious. Sometimes when I’m doing my voting I’m thinking “which ones capture the theme best” and sometimes I’m thinking “which pics have the best concept/execution”… depends on my mood at the time. I don’t mind a cell phone camera shot that gets the theme right as long as it’s not too chunky, but I won’t vote for a fantastic photo where I can’t figure out how it relates to the theme in question. And then there’s times where you have a perfect storm of a great picture that also nails the theme like the winner of the “Green” contest.

I just can’t believe that some yahoos actually snuck in B&W pics in a color-themed contest. Sheesh!

Never saw your site before the change

Don’t care for the flash galleries. Seems to take a long time to load and to me it doesn’t seem to do the job of letting me find a pic I want to look at and view that pic in all its glory.

Maybe I’m just old fashioned but still nothing beats a page of thumbnails linked to big pictures. For my (cough cough) photography site I just tell Picasa to make me that, it does it in about a minute and it’s simple as anything, no brains required to make or view.

Your site looks more professional, but when it comes to actually looking at pictures I’ll take 1996 over 2005 any day.

    Here’s what I see:

First off I don’t know if it’s a web server thing or what but I took that screen shot at 4:41, it’s now 4:46 and it’s still “Waiting for lotusimages.com….”, not sure what’s up with that.

But as a casual viewer I can only see thumbnails of half of five pictures. I don’t want to sit through a slide show, I like to pick and choose. Assuming there’s more than five pics in the entire gallery, I have no idea what else might be in there. And of the five thumbnails, I don’t even really know what their full-size counterparts might be because I can only see their top halves. There’s no scroll bars, no slidey things, no hints that there might be five pics or five hundred.

On the other hand there’s this

You can’t get any more bare basic, but you see thumbnails on the left, a visually unpleasing scroll bar so you can see all the thumbnails, and then there’s a big picture in the main frame (frames?! ewwww but they get the job done here). Yah it doesn’t have the fancy percent counter showing the big picture getting loaded, but the picture does load fairly quickly and that’s kinda an important thing with a photography site.

Farbeit from me to tell the professionals what to do, but hopefully you can just fiddle with a couple things with your new site and fix the problems mentioned above without having to scrap it and start over. And hopefully you’ll take the above as the constructive criticism it was submitted as.

PS 4:57 and still “Waiting for lotusimages.com…”

How is there a five-hour difference between last week’s arrival on Cheapskate Fark and this week’s?

Just curious, it works to my advantage this time around as I have to work tonight and will be getting home right around the time it should show up on Fark Cheap.

Thanks for the replies, and the compliment. The subject is Kurt, one of our three Pugs. It was taken at the dog park under overcast late afternoon skies so available light was starting to become a problem.

Just poking around with the D100 I see it does have that feature where I can adjust the aperture/shutter while in P mode, so now I have something else to fiddle with. One of these days I’ll crack open that tome that came with the camera and really figure out what all those buttons and switches do.

I can’t tell if you’re just wondering out loud or otherwise, but personally in all the contests I’ve entered I still walk away with a smile because someone liked my photo. That and I really enjoy seeing what everyone else has to offer, too.

Mostly wondering out loud, I know nobody can come on here and say “to get lots of votes, you need to do this, this, and this”. Just amused that so many like what I shot basically as an afterthought Wednesday afternoon.

Definitely agree with the smile thing. The first time I checked the results of the first week I submitted something and saw I had actually earned a single vote it was like “hey, that’s cool, I can’t be totally out of my element here”. Next thing you know I’ll be submitting B&W pics with little copyright thingies on them.

OK I’ll readily admit I know nothing about photography. I also know nothing about half the themes posted here. But I play along to be cannon fodder for the pros who people like me make look good.

So I submit a pic that my own reaction to was “meh” basically so I could say I articipated. Set it up in about 10 seconds (not including all the time invested washing/waxing the vehicles involved) and shot it with the camera in hands and on no-brainer mode.

The thing gets 18 votes, more than half of the winning entries and literally multiple times the number of votes my previous entrants have ever earned. There’s like 50 pictures I like better that have fewer votes than mine.

    Go figger.
