I have a camera bag that holds two bodies, two additional lenses, the SB600 flash and a buttload of accessories and it’s never had an issue going through airport security, and it’s gone through quite a few times.

According to the log, I shot the 16th exposure of 27 so there should still be plenty of chances for everyone to get in on it.

I tremble in fear of what it will take to send this thing to the other side of the planet but if that’s what needs to be done then it’ll get done.

Claff: Yeah, it’s a closely-guarded secret that you can get good pictures out of just about any camera that has some decent manual exposure settings in it. A good DSLR just makes it easier.

You are correct. I can pretty quickly get to shutter speed on the G6 but haven’t quite figured out how to work full manual mode. I’ve been spoiled by the D100 that has two adjuster wheels so I can quickly work both shutter and aperture simultaneously. The G6 has one wheel and in manual mode it works shutter speed, haven’t yet found out how to change aperture… but I never read the book, and I’ve only had it for like three years.

Another thing the G6 has over the big ol Nikon is that said Nikon (still!) needs a sensor cleaning and the little creepie crawlies are really bugging me. They don’t exist on the Canon.

We had them in the DC area three or four years ago and all I’m gonna say is that I’m very happy they only show up once every 17 years. What a racket, not to mention those things are HYOOOGE. One of them got into my car and made its final resting place the package shelf waaaaay in the corner of the rear window and I feared the thing coming apart into 3000 little pieces when I tried to tweezer the corpse outta there. That it came out in one piece was not really any consolation as it was still a big dead thing.

I brag about having a Nikon D100 but I think I get equal and maybe even occasionally better results out of a Canon Powershot G6 that the missus won in a door prize drawing at a conference a couple years back. I might think it’s possibly a better camera in some instances because it was free.

My big ‘gatcha’ is, after going to manual focus for a tricky shot, forgetting to switch back to autofocus and until this dawns on me I shoot a lot of junk. Now, when I park my cameras for the night I switch them to manual focus just so I get in the habit of checking that particular setting every time I pick the thing up.

I have done my dirty little work with the Farkamera and it’s bundled up and ready to be sent to the next victim. Who wants it?

since my maxxum 7D with kit lens was roughly $800 and an additional 75-300 AF film lens another $175 plus associated shipping for both that may explain why my shots aren’t as sharp as i’d like. i really like the body but knew going in that the lenses could be a stumbling block.

I’ll do you one better on the cheaskate sale. I got my D100 with a decent Sigma 28-70 lens second-hand for under $500 a year and a half ago. My other lenses are from a Sigma two-lens combo kit (28-90 and 70-300) that retails for about $229 I think.

I’d like to think I do more with less than most photographers I know, but there’s probably someone else out there who can out-cheap me and probably get better results to boot.

Big fan of Nikon here only beause I’ve never used a Canon. Since I know the controls of the Nikon so well (?) I’m not really interested in trying something new. The two dials for shutter speed & aperture make the ‘higher’ Nikons so much better than anything else out there we have two of them (my D100 and the wife’s D70s).

Can’t say to definitively go with the Nikon over the Canon, but this is a vote of confidence for the “N” brand.

When I do web albums I do it with Picasa. It’s not fancy but it works, doing thumbnails automagically and links for “next pic” and “previous pic” – which I could do manually in HTML but now I don’t have to.

I do watermarks manually in Photoshop. When I do web albums it’s sually only 50ish pics at a time at the most so it’s not a huge chunk of time to add the watermark after doing all the other processing.

A great picture that (IMHO) misses the theme won’t get my vote. But all other things being equal, I vote for good stuff.

The Farkamera has arrived safely and soundly in Washington DC. I just got back from a five-day road trip (never again!) at midnight so I’ll need a day or two to decompress and then I’ll fire off my shot and send it on to the next participant, whomever that may be.

I do just to make sure they get at least one vote to show up in the FSM. Sometimes, that’s the only vote they get.

When I go to the track I have media credentials arranged in advance so I never worry about getting in. Once there, though, I take the attitude that I’m welcome anywhere I want (within reason) until someone stops me. Walk around like you own the place and you can get away with a lot. But it’s also important that when you’re stopped and it’s for a legit reason, not to throw a hissy fit, just thank the guy for doing his job and find another place to shoot from. I try to appear fairly professional even if deep down inside I’m really not.

I was shooting trackside last weekend and while I usually shoot at a stupid fast shutter with fast aperture, I was experimenting with slower shutter (1/125ish) for more of a sense of speed. I had to crank the aperture up (down?) to around 11 to 14 and the junk that showed up on those pics ruined the whole batch for me. I gotta do that sensor cleaning before the next time out and I’m a little skittish about doing it cause I’ve never done it before.

As you can see, the junk on the sensor wound up smack dab in the middle of the car’s hood in most cases, and that’s a tough place to try and fix things.
