ParticipantHere in NYC I see listings for Photo Meetups and Photo Walks which routinely start at $99 just to attend a photo walk in a public place and be escorted around, say, Central Park. I emailed one a while back asking if there was a class associated with it or a professional photographer giving tips and tricks. No, just a guided photo tour of a place that it is entirely free to go and walk around taking pictures.
So much of this kind of thing is the brainchild of someone nefarious enough to grasp that silly people will pay good money to do things they could for free if a label is applied such as group or class.
As far as someone teaching you to run your color film, it is exactly the same as black and white except for the addition of the bleach/fix step. The times and temperature are a touch more exacting but still you do the same steps in the same order in the same tanks. A simple soap and water wash between color and black and white is all you need to keep your tanks free of contamination.

ParticipantIt looks like some of us need a little help, so I give you the definitive documentary feature on Dungeons and Dragons:
You will learn about the mechanics of the game and most importantly, the psyche of the gamers.

Participantok you have D&D with caps then you have dungeons and (mythical) dragons with out caps. are all fair game?
for instance i have a bow and some arrows. like a step or two above what a kid might have. if i took a picture ……… well right now i have no idea how i’d make an interesting photo of them but if i did ………..
If the bow is not a modern compound bow, I would think it fits.

ParticipantI’m getting a little confused as to how the image “won’t be used for commercial use or to make a profit” but at the same time is “for advertisement.” Isn’t that what commercial use is, leading eventually to profit?
I’d also be interested in seeing how much of your picture he’s using as a background. If it’s a focal point, then you can request more cash versus if it’s a blurred out, minor player.
I am inferring that he plans on using it as part of advert for his services, not as a background for a print he is making for a client. In my opinion that makes it a for profit, which is why I think charging is the right thing to do. If this were a non-profit I would donate the shot for credit, something I’ve done several times for other organizations.
If and when he replies (these things sometimes just vanish into the ether) I will post more details.

ParticipantY’all really brought it tonight! Well, time to go work on D&D!

ParticipantDitto the borders, I think they give a nice effect to the Tryps. Plus they make alignment a snap. I am not married to them, however if the group goes small/no borders I can make changes.

ParticipantPrints will be cost + some reasonable markup. I haven’t worked that all out yet, depends where I get them from. Hell, if ennuipoet or someone else here can deliver quality larger prints at cheaper cost, I might outsource to them and make some money for both of us (if he’s into that sort of thing).
Yup, we can work something out if needed. I think I have a handle on the cost ratios of printing (it ain’t in the paper, if you haven’t guessed) and how much ink per print. Truth be told it is cheaper for one or two large prints to use a service but for good tonal control and knowing that the photo you looks the same in the print, doing it yourself is the only way to go!

ParticipantU-man, I am SO glad you ruled my earlier entries were too far out of theme, because what I shot to replace them I am in love with. I sometimes forget the whole “challenge to do better” part and just want to coast on what I have. I gave up my guitar idea because (whine mode enable) when I tried it, it was too hard!(end whine mode) but I shot it and damn, I love the shots.

are some very convenient frames for those using the GIMP, P-shop (full or elements) any editing program that allows layers and layer modes. Open the original file, then paste you image as a new layer, scale and center on the frame then set your layer mode to Screen and voila, easy Trips!

ParticipantI am swayed to the negative as well, though I in no way intended this to be a continuous money thing. I envisioned a way for people to offer their work to be printed without going through the hassle of setting up accounts someplace but I cannot imagine a way to do that without turning it into much bigger deal than our friendly corner of the Interwebs should be about.

ParticipantThe money issue is tricky, while one of us might be willing to sell a print at cost or for a small mark-up, others might feel differently. I was thinking a one off print sale where all the prints go for a set price with a limited run. Participants decide what prints they would like to offer and a base price is set to cover printing cost, shipping and then marked up so the Farktographer makes a little beer/coffee/cat food purchase from their photo.
I can see there might be ill will if (and I use myself here as an example) if I sold thirty prints and the other participants sold one or none. I think Yugoboy‘s idea of a separate forum site where individuals could offer their work and keep the details of cost or sales private to avoid ill will has some real merit. The Redbubble, Deviantart idea is also nice if we had individual accounts where pricing and profits come under the direct control of the individual rather than the group as a community account has a lot of trust places on a few people to handle the money.
This is trickier than I originally thought.
ETA: Yugo, the calendar is actually a great idea! Along the lines of the cards from the squirrels! We could have a theme where the top 12 vote getters were featured for that year’s Farktography Calendar. Maybe even a Anonymous Farktography Theme where the names we all use aren’t associated just the photos submitted all entered by a Modmin in separate entries and voting enabled. Kind of like a Headline of the Year contest.

ParticipantThere are numerous professional services that will build you a website, a Google search will provide them. 1x Photo is part website builder, portfolio site/professional site and part social network. They all cost, a lot.
I have my home site:
http://freeversephotography.com/
which is pretty cheesy, because I can’t code for shiat. What I started doing is integrating my Pro site with my blog via WordPress.
http://freeversephotography.com/freeversephotoblog/
When I am done I hope to have everything a pro site would have portfolio, bio, rates, publishing credits ect all directly from the Blog which what I am seeing more and more small photography business doing. Pro photo sites say your business should all be reflected on the Blog so a customer can see what you are doing, how often you are publishing and how much you cost all in one place. This method has the benefit of being fairly cheap, as the templates from WordPress are free and you pay for hosting only.
In the end, if you can’t code and you want the full flash stunning website, you are going to have to hire a designer and build it.

ParticipantI am a regular reader of the The Online Photographer and TOP just solicited submissions for print sale. 600 submissions were winnowed to 20 finalist and they were voted on to reach the 5 offered. Here are the five:
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2011/11/the-five-finalists.html
Two of the five (and I think it will be easy to spot which) are very much in the Duss school style. What I think is relevant is this post
in which the blog owner/author talks about his favorite shots but not picked for prints. It wasn’t until he talked about how some of his preferred shots he couldn’t envision someone buying to hang on their wall that I got what this is about: what looks good on display.
I print a lot of my shots now since I bought the big printer, but I can see why other people wouldn’t hang them on a wall. After all, I photograph strangers doing strange things, why would anyone want an 11X14 of this guy

on their wall? Much of the Duss school is very conducive to large prints and the subject matter is pleasing and not controversial, in short it sells well. A huge market segment is corporate buildings, hotels, ect who want visually pleasing art with no political or social message that might cause customers/clients to be upset. Yes the photos are, IMHO, bland, and maybe that is what the original author is on about, how the style, the market is killing photography by making it about what sells instead of what is visually compelling.

ParticipantMeh..I just take pictures.
Heh, I really get into the “philosophy” of photography. It is an unhealthy associations from love of poetry. You think THIS is a pedantic argument here, get a group of poets in one room and then get THEM started on the various schools, movements, styles and variations of poetry. People think poets are all soft and squishy, mention Beat Poets in the wrong group and they WILL CUT YOU. 😛
