There’s some really nice entries this week (I just love weather pictures.) I’m kinda dissappointed that a couple that I REALLY like only have one vote thus far (but I haven’t voted–and it’s way early yet.) They include Zero‘s ‘Let it snow’ (effective use of blur), mason‘s raindrops on a window at 500mph (great color), Uranus‘s kid in the snow (good use of depth), and Lovesandwich‘s fog on the ocean (nice proportions.)

Yeah, I was surprised to see Zero‘s Let it Snow had only a vote or two. There are a lot of snow pictures, which may be pary of the reason, but that one has a lot going for it. Uranus‘s child in the snow picture was another I expected to see higher up (the other two I can’t recall offhand).
Mind you, it’s still early days yet.

Someone (not a terribly frequent poster) has already duplicated a previous picture in this week competition. It was originally in “Rain”, which is where I remember it from, and it did quite well.
So it appears that not everyone takes the No Repeats rule that seriously.
Hmmm. It’s very much a self-policed rule anyway.

    LeicaLens, re – Wind: http://flic.kr/p/9draXp – that’s an interesting …

… what the heck IS that thing?

You mean the big green thing flapping around? It was an awning they put up to keep the sun off them. The ladies were there to watch the gliders (a shot of which went into my “A’s”.
We were up near Mt. Aso (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Aso) which is actually the remains of a big Caldera. Quite unusual weather, in that it was warm enough to be hot, but because we were so high up the wind was pretty strong.
Hot and windy; coming from Britain, that is not something I am used to. Well, except for when my older brother decided to play Forced Dutch Ovens, but that’s another story 😯

I too like the puking rainbow. Lots of snow in this one. Wonder how that’s going to affect Old Man Winter?

Yeah, I’m going to have to fall back on the archives for this one as well. All of the interesting stuff will be coming up in a few months. Right now it’s nothing but gray.

Same goes for me, pretty much. On top of that, I haven’t had time to get out and shoot recently.
Still, I have a couple of decent ones in the archives that might do okay. Problem is, they both show the same type of weather.

I am looking at buying a Canon 50mm 1.4, and I have found a good one secondhand for 29000 yen. Your price converts to around 24500 yen, which is a pretty good saving, but shipping it to Japan would put it over.
So, if I was in the States, there is a lot of stuff I would love from your list.

Here’s the final tally on this one: 2748 votes, which puts it almost 1000 votes more than the past 11 contests’ average and at the #17 spot all-time. What I found most interesting, though, is the comparatively low number of entrants and entries in this one:

So, something about this one spoke to the voters even if it didn’t get quite as many farktographers.

Interesting. My first guess would be the geek factor of the theme itself. There were a lot of awesome entries, though, so that didn’t hurt, either.

Well, they out-geeked me. I didn’t even recognise the Python reference until I saw (and read) olavf‘s entry 😳

LeicaLens, I really like your first three B’s. The first B has really nice bokeh and that “awwww, how cute” factor. And I like how the colors pop in the umbrella B.

Not saying I don’t like your A’s (you are No Catchy Nickname on Fark, right?), but I’d definitely have used the first B as an A.

    Thanks for the feedback, CauseISaidSo
Yes, I am No Catchy Nickname on Fark. I couldn’t have spaces in my handle here, so I changed it completely.

I was really torn over the first B, for the reasons you said. The only reason I didn’t include it was because the two adolescent macaques weren’t facing the camera. Hmmmm…

I have a nasty feeling I made the wrong choices this week. They were all archive shots, as I didn’t have anything taken for this theme that would be ready in time. That’s what made choosing so difficult.

    Some B’s:
    http://flic.kr/p/99SUXW
    http://flic.kr/p/99SUTs
    http://flic.kr/p/99PLsZ
    http://flic.kr/p/99SUVE
The last one is sort of the original of the “See no evil…” maxim.

Any advice or comments would be welcome.

In my mind, Leica‘s ladder would be great with mopsy‘s suggested cropping of the rust, but the petals in the gutter I’m not so sure about, but not for the reasons suggested. I find the brown tones, both in the concrete to the right and in the straw a bit to much color for a strict interpretation.

I see where you are coming from on this. I actually thought the straw and one blade of grass gave it too much colour (and I have no intention of using the shot). The brown concrete I am not sure about, and that’s mainly the reason why I posted it as an example. True, it’s not greyscale or B&W, but it is pretty devoid of colour, enough to make the petals “pop”.

Hmm, reading that, it seems that the one object could be multi-coloured.
Is that right? I didn’t think that was in the original spirit of the theme, but I could be wrong. Confirmation, anyone.

I was under the impression that that would be fine, as in the original color popping. An easy-to-mind example would be a bright, multi-colored flag or kite on a background of grey skies.

    Ah. That I didn’t know.
    Useful.

Leical, I just had another thought about your blue pipes. If you cropped the right hand side past the rust, you would not have an issue.

Right. The picture I posted was actually straight from the camera, albeit resized. If I were to use it, I would crop out the rust. However, I’m not sure that some blue pipes will really garner the votes 😉
Anyway, thanks for responding; it gives me a much better idea of what goes.
My own feeling on this is that the pictures will speak for themselves, and if the voters feel that a colour isn’t really popping, they won’t vote for it.
That may be too optimistic of me…
