Ok, just to clarify. The theme description says this:

Take a photo that appears to be black and white/grayscale with the exception of one object or color.

Certainly the one object or color could be located in the “background,” but the theme wording suggests it should be a single object or single color, not multiple objects of the same type just colored differently, or a multi-colored background with grayscale foreground/objects. It just sounds like we’re going to now allow for a lot more colors than the theme wording allows for, but maybe I’m confused by the different examples being offered.

Hmm, reading that, it seems that the one object could be multi-coloured.
Is that right? I didn’t think that was in the original spirit of the theme, but I could be wrong. Confirmation, anyone.

For the record, my original post about “allowing” more colour was actually more concerned with the definition or range of greyscale. When I was looking at some shots I had taken with this in mind, I got to realising that concrete isn’t exactly greyscale. It has a colour of its own.
To show better what I mean, the first example probably wouldn’t qualify anyway because of the orange rust stains, but the concrete itself is not exactly greyscale:

The second example might not qualify because there are flecks of some other colour other than the pinky-red petals, but to my interpretation only the pinky-red is “popping”.

I would appreciate other people’s opinions on whether pictures like these match the theme or not.
    Pretty please.

Sorry, I read your post and checked your website, but I didn’t leave a comment in this thread.
Because I had already left a reply written in blood on your mattress.

no one hour photo in Japan?

Depends on the film. Kodak BW400Cn can be done in an hour, but I was, by chance, trying out some weird Czech-made black and white film (Fomapan?), and the place I use has to send it to a lab in Fukuoka city. I put it in yesterday, but they don’t send it until Tuesday.
Pity, because I was quite confident in the shots I took.
Ah well, serves me right for not learning how to develop my own.

I use Olympus Master 2, which came with my camera. ib appears to be a slightly newer version, without the useful “arrange by calendar” function.
I imagine you already found it, but here’s a link to a Q&A about it:
    http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/qa/contents/ib/ib_a1.cfm

If it is anything like Olympus Master, you can use it to process Oly RAW files (White balance, exposure, gradation etc.), and jpegs using the edit function.
I take it you are using an Olympus camera? To develop a RAW picture, right click on the one you want to develop, and then click on “Open RAW development window” (it might be slightly different wording in ib).

If you have any specific questions, I will try to help.

Only thing I’ve noticed was some long submit times too. That’s been going on for quite awhile, I figured it was cause I was talking too much…

I get that. Particularly on my first submission.
I shall try to keep my posts shorter…

I like heebe_stevo’s sparkler circle photo. It has a feel to it.

Agreed. I just commented in the thread, too, since he probably doesn’t read over here.

I didn’t compete this week, so I don’t have a horse in this race. From a neutral standpoint, I can say that that is my favourite picture this week.
There were a lot of spectacular pictures, a lot of cool pictures, a few “how did he/she do that?” pictures, but that picture of heebe_stevo’s just has something else about it that makes it stand out. The guy’s expression is part of it, but the intimacy brought about the with the wide angle close up also draws me into the picture.

    Dammit.

For my Olympus digital I have a 50-200 f2.8~3.5 SWD lens, which is 100-400mm when converted to 35mm film focal lengths. It is a great lens, the best Olympus make for the money, in my opinion, and the main reason why I haven’t switched to another camera system. Lenses in that zoom range and with that speed for Nikons and Canons are about 2-3 times the price.

Other than that I have access to Canon’s 400m f5.6 L lens. There’s no IS, and it’s not the fastest lens around, but it’s still a good lens, sharp and with good bokeh. I have read an article by a pro praising it. My friend tried it on his Canon Kiss and was pleased with the results, even just hand-held. It is also relatively cheap. Relatively. I haven’t tried it on my Canon film camera yet.

My two yen on this one:
I think the examples posted by Pope_Larry_II and EdenLiesObscured are fine. If we limit it too much we will have a) entries all the same (something on snow, or painted on a black background), b) sneaky photoshopping, or c) very few entries.
Having a single colour popping out of the picture, like the pink cloth or the orange glow on the leaves, should be allowed in my view. I ought to add that I thought the top left corner in EdenLiesObscured‘s entry might be a tad too colourful.
Also, having gone out a few times with the camera for this theme, I can say that having a strict definition of “monochromatic” will not make this a fun contest. The original inspiration for this theme, picture of a woman on bridge holding a red umbrella, was actually one of my shots, and if you look again you will see the sky is also tinted red as it was nearing sunset. That would probably make the shot ineligible for this contest, if we apply the strict definition.

Man, I’m already over my New Year’s hangover here;)
Went to a shrine and temple at midnight in the snow. I may have some good pictures from it, but I haven’t got anything for the upcoming theme.

There’s some good stuff this week. It was a difficult theme to think up doable ideas for.
I wasn’t able to pull off the one I wanted: a picture of me scoring the winning goal for England in the World Cup final while dressed as Spiderman and riding a Harley Davidson.

You mean m4/3 mount on an Olympus would be the same as a m4/3 mount on the Panasonic models?
The Panasonic GH and GF range have the same m4/3 mount as the Olympus m4/3, so lenses are interchangeable, though you might find focusing speeds vary.
Actually, one in-store adviser told me the Auto focus on panasonic m4/3 lenses wouldn’t work on an Olympus m4/3 body. However, another in-store adviser has told me differently. Also, I have a panasonic 4/3 lens (actually a Leica-licensed lens, hence my handle here…a fake Leica) and use it on my Olympus body with absolutely no problems, so I suspect the first adviser was wrong.
In other words, other companies’ m4/3 lenses should work on your Olympus m4/3 body.
Personally, I like the look of the 20mm panasonic more than Olympus’s 17mm. However, the compact Olympus zooms are supposed to be good. For wide angle, the panasonic 9-18mm has had good reviews. A bit pricey, though.

Yep, you need an FD to M4/3 converter. Apparently, the FD lenses work pretty well on the M4/3 mount. Take advantage of the zoom booster in liveview (or the viewfinder attachment if you have it) to get the manual focus really sharp. You press a button (the Fn, I think), and live view zooms in to a designated spot so you can focus accurately.
The Lensbaby will need a converter.
I am toying with a M4/3 camera myself; rumour has it there will be a PEN with a rangefinder-type electrical veiwfinder.

Errr, I got myself a 1955 Ricohflex twin reflex camera (8cm , f3.5) for my first foray into medium format. Only 10,000 yen, and it seems to be in good nick.
The wife was gobsmacked, but sadly not in a good way.
Hey, I got her something sparkly to make up for it.
