ParticipantThis is from the rules page – Image corrections are accepted. Color or value correction? Perspective? Pin cushion? Unsightly blemishes? Stray hairs falling over your model’s alabaster face? Fix these. That’s cool.
I think we changed it before the last time we did a portrait contest.

ParticipantConversion of the whole image to B&W is entirely OK. Anything done selectively to the the image gets you on thin ice. Color pop is right out. Clone stamp for filter dust is OK. Clone stamp for a big forehead zit is not OK.
Right folks?
Cleaning up the zit would be ok.

ParticipantWelcome, some advice with the number of band geeks around here you may not want to draw attention to the fact that you played piccillo though. *shudders at the thought of tuning piccillos*
🙁 all my pictures this week are of my piccolo.
I always wound up using a practice room to tune mine. You can’t tune quietly on notes that high, always made me self-conscious.
And I’m with clouddancer: one at a time! Kes, it’s all yours 😀
My favorite memory of piccillos was when 2 of them were trying to tune and after several minutes of pain people started realizing that someone was whistling just out of tune just to piss everyone off.

ParticipantBonus: snared another Farktographer into posting 😀
FYI: you snared at least one more, starting with this contest. I have my first three farktography pics ever, ready to go!
I played flute since 2nd grade, piccolo from 7th grade on, and I’m not too shabby on the piano, alto sax, and clarinet. Now I’m teaching myself to play guitar.
Never could quite figure out the brass instruments, although my dad and sister played trombone and my bro played trumpet. Mom played clarinet. We all sing. Could’ve been the von Trapp family 🙂

ParticipantOk–my camera has a monochrome setting called Cyanotype (Nikon d80), which in essence makes what would be b/w pics with a blue hue instead. It can be subtle like B/w or quite blue. Is this acceptable?
Sepia is allowed so I believe this would be allowed too.

ParticipantHeres the holga contest from a couple years ago – http://www.fark.com/cgi/comments.pl?IDLink=2531826
Most of those entries were probably done with computers from regular lenses though.linguine
ParticipantIts basically a cheap lens, often made of cheap glass or nice plastic, that adds some distortion and vignetting to the image. Gimp(and Im assuming photoshop) has a holga filter that lets you get the effect from an image taken with a regular lens if you wanted to play around with it.

ParticipantYeah yeah yeah. Every other brass instrument is for the other hand. But nooooooooooo French horn has to be different.
Well, to be fair, they *were* being played with the right hand until someone came along and stuck valves on them…
Actually I believe at least since the formation of orchestras its been played from the same angle because it was easier to change the different sections of pipes for different keys when it was held with the left hand up high and the right hand in the bell.

ParticipantI always HATED that the French horn is played wrong handed. I think if I could have switched to euphonium, I would have been pleased as punch to have that range, but not deal with playing the instrument with my left hand.
When you just start with the french horn its just natural because youre not used to doing those fingerings any other way.

ParticipantOne more question; are solid borders allowed (in general also)? I can’t remember if I’ve seen them used or not and I have one for this week that is screaming for a black border.
Small solid borders are allowed in any contest.

Participant‘guine, you could always put that caption under the pic.
I was planning on doing that, but I figured if I was allowed to include the caption it would be better that way.

ParticipantIf the goal of this is to get as many farktographers would it be easier to just let anyone who wants to be in the book get have some of their best entries in rather than trying to do the top 10 or 20 each week and then trying to track down all the people that just competed a couple of times and have left or leave holes in the top 10/20. Maybe do something like base the number of photos in the book off of total votes so that the people with the most good entries are able to show off a little bit more of their work.

ParticipantI think the text is taking it too far. You allow that, and it’s basically an Illustrator contest and we’ve got swallows and pigeons and geegaws and gimcracks, and I’m not up for all that crap.
But without the caption in the photo would be fine right?
And I figured I need to share the opponent since I already used the original image for this before so I couldn’t use it in the contest.

ParticipantWould something like this be allowed

Or is adding the text taking it too far?linguine
ParticipantWow, good job.
