Hi, there. I was wondering where you were, and why you hadn’t been in recent contests.

Tim Russert died. There were some really bad floods in the Midwest that drove up corn prices (and as a result, will further raise gas prices, because of American ethanol is primarily made of corn, and a 10% ethanol blend is now required in all American gasoline IIRC). As you may already know, the average price of American 87 octane jumped over $4/gallon, with no relief in sight, and that was before the Midwest flooding. Other than that, not much of known significance to you happened.

(I know, where did I go, blah blah blah. I honestly got bored of Farktography contests, so I stopped even viewing them for a while. Lost my interest in photography, too; I only photograph on rare occasions these days. I guess it’s the combination of the ergonomics of my camera/lens combo, combined with the social stigma among some members of the general public, that has made it less open and inviting to take pictures. I want to enjoy and feel comfortable taking pictures. I might enter the “Dinner is Served” competition, but it’s more likely that I’ll wait until the bokeh contest to enter again.)

    COMPUTER MONITOR RESOLUTIONS AHOY!

Hey, I needed to get your attention, right? 😛

To answer the question: “What sizes should I use for my wallpaper?”, here’s the Official Answer. Elsinore (or whoever else would do this), if you want to post this in the TF forum (for instance, if some of them won’t come here for whatever reason), please go ahead and do it.
    _______________________________________

There are two types of screen types out there, both of which I plan, through cropping, to appease with my three entries:

    1. Pan-and-scan (4×3 aspect ratio); most common sizes are 1024×768 & 1280×1024.

    2. Widescreen (16×10 aspect ratio*); most common sizes are 1440×900 (most widescreen monitors) and 1680×1050 (mondo huge monitors/Apple Cinema 20″ displays).
    _______________________________________

Now that’s the easy part. However, I myself have questions:

    1. What to do for those with abnormal resolutions, say, those with 23″ Apple Cinema Displays (1920×1200), 30″ Apple Cinema Displays (2560×1600), or my display (1400×1050)?

    2. Where can I find online usage percentages for each monitor type? Yes, I found this, but it doesn’t give specifics for widescreen or 1280×1024 resolutions.

    * Yes, widescreen TVs are 16×9, but for some reason, widescreen computer monitors are 16×10

I’m too lazy to go read, but does image shack have a similar policy as putfile?

    Currently, no.

I don’t use RSS these days, and I doubt that such a feed would change my current Farktography surfing habits.

    Thanks for the tip, chakalakasp.

The legal page was last updated on Feb. 12 [EDIT: This was based on what I saw when I read the legal page a few hours ago, and saw it on the bottom of the page — that part has been taken down], so if anybody’s posted a good Farktography entry since then, they might as well enter it in the “Happy Farktography Anniversary” contest on May 9, as since Fark seems to have full copyright to those photos, anyway, reposting won’t affect anything. Otherwise, until this policy is changed for the better, it looks like that contest will be my swansong if things don’t change…

I’ve found an interesting conundrum for Drew and his lawyers. Let’s say that I host an image on putfile.com, which, last I checked, has a similar copyright grab policy, then post the image onto Fark. Who owns the copyright then? 😆

/no rightsgrabbing issues on the Farktography forum, right? 😉

OK, for us Liters who can’t see the TF thread, what’s changing? How super-de-duper horrendous is this going to be?

*I hope additional methods of TotalFark payment are included in the changes*

I dont think i like it, im not going to be able to randomly highlight stuff while im reading anymore.

Could someone please clarify this? Does this only involve people with Firefox and certain extensions or something?

What the fark is it with these asshats who drive everywhere in all weather with their farking fog lights on? There’s no fog. There isn’t even any rain. Not a farking cloud in the sky. And yet they all drive around with their farking fog lights on, blinding other drivers who then turn on their own fog lights.

Many of those cars probably have something called “Daytime Running Lights” (DRL). It’s supposed to be a safety feature built into cars. The idea is that having the low beams turned on (not the high beams) increases the car’s visibility to other drivers, even in the daytime, potentially reducing the risk of an accident. Because of this, having them lowers car insurance rates. The drivers can’t turn the lights off, and if the parent drivers with DRL-equipped cars (a large percentage of such drivers on the road) believe that keeping them on means that their children are less likely to be part of an accident, why would they want to?

There are signs along a road in MD, SR 404, telling drivers that it’s state law for them to turn on their lights on that road, even in the day, because of the undivided two-lane (read: one lane in each direction) roadway and its 55 MPH speed limit. Maybe I’ll get pic of a sign one day to prove its existance.

Oh, and anyone who wraps their headlights in farking blue Saran wrap to simulate HID headlights should be shot.

Wow — people where you live actually do that to their cars? And yes, I would find that potentially annoying and absolutely tacky (and bad). There ought to be a law banning it nationwide, in case this trend passes on to other areas like Florida and Ohio — or the DC area.

I don’t feel too bad about not knowing the comma deli-meated thing though.

Especially since some people on here can’t even do 1st grade math.

Yeah, I know what you’re saying. I should have checked that one guy’s math before voting for his entry. Apparently he’s not smarter than a fifth grader.

Here’s the link to millera9‘s rendition of Barbie’s failed native-converting mission.

Good point, Zeke. Another similar “whoa” picture in the running is Diggin‘s Halloween photo. It’ll be interesting to see how many votes can be attained for each one on this go-around. As they say in the stock market, “Past performance does not necessarily predict future results”.

Also, don’t count chakalakasp out quite yet (not that any of you have — right?). Remember that last year’s contest was won on an entry that he hadn’t previously entered, if I remember correctly. So, we may not have a clue as to what photos will be submitted. In fact, even he might not know what they’ll be, as it’s twister season once again in the Midwest, giving him the opportunity to add even more severe weather photos to his portfolio — it could take just one really good, and perhaps fresh, one (with Flickr commenting as a guide as to which one to select)…

So I was wrong: We might as well re-title this contest “Everybody Try to Finish a Distant Fourth to chakalakasp, millera9, and Diggin*”.

    *not necessarily in that order

This contest might as well be re-named “Everybody Try to Finish a Distant Second to chakalakasp*”.

    * unless we’re all playing for third; maybe even fourth.

You forgot to mention the pink elephant area that’s big enough for it to roam a little.

    Ooo house?

Though that would be nice, it’s doubtful. See, if she’s shopping for a house, wouldn’t that be a hobby right now? If she’s on pregnancy bedrest for whatever reason, it would explain why she can’t go Farktographing, at least in any seemingly decent fashion. What hobbies could she make a compelling photograph out of from her bed? Could she make a rad photostitch? Does she have a laptop to post-process? 😉

/let the blatant speculation and rumor mill run wild!

    Indeed! (Any comment, Mr. monkeybort?)

Hehe, thanks but I think monkeybort should get it. She was winning when veruca called it last night. Besides, her picture’s way better and took way more skill and forethought. She deserves it!

I was thinking the same sort of thing but was too scared to say it — I didn’t want to offend you.

I’d say that the FSM is the main arbiter of who gets the ultimate victory.
