i don’t know why, just came across as snotty after i posted. glad it’s all in my head!

Participantwhat are you using the images for?
if you’re printing, i think that pretty much anything over 300 ppi is wasted.
if you change the ppi, be sure to change the dimensions as well, so your file size doesn’t change – that will help keep you from getting fuzziness or pixelation that would occur if you radically changed the file size.
example – my pics come off my camera at something like 48 x 32 inches, 72 ppi, which is about a 25 mb file (i’m estimating here). during my workflow i change the dimensions to 12 x 8 inches, 300 ppi, but my file size stays at 25 mbs.
ICC profiles are color profiles. if you have your workspace, your monitor, your camera, scanner, and your printer all set to the same profile, your prints/scans/files are going to be much more uniform from camera to monitor to printer (or whatever).

Participantsorry – i posted it because someone in a previous topic had asked that someone post a link so it was easier to find once it went green.
which will be at midnight, fark time.
ummm…that was a lot less snotty in my head. sorry!! 😳

Participantit makes no difference to me, really. wednesday can sometimes be a pain just because there are a lot of events during the week here. for instance, there is a fundraiser this week for the skate park on wednesday night. so i guess that is a vote for changing it, for me.
veruca – would you mind posting a poll? i still haven’t figured those pesky things out. 🙂

Participanton my crt at work, the first and third are really blown out in the highlights – the second one looks good.

ParticipantMy FZ-30 is a bit large to toss into the briefcase, so I’m thinking about a compact zoom option to have on hand for those great shots that show up unexpectedly now and then.
My “other” camera currently is a Powershot S1, which may be a little too big as well.
Any suggestions?
i just got the canon sd550 7 megapixel. it’s tiny, even in its own carrying case it fits in my bag with no problem. i love it – take it to bars, snowboarding…pretty much my ‘go everywhere’ camera.

ParticipantI just thought I’d pop in and say hello. Hello! It’s weird being back after so long. It almost feels like walking back into class after being out with Mono for 8 weeks.
I missed you guys! Dial up/no internet is no way to live.
Gone a month and still no tag! 👿 Seriously what gives? Is it really that hard to add a tag? I see they have added a tag for fark publicity…
I’m gonna stop now. I have been home for almost 5 days and I still have to finish unpacking…
sorry to hear about the hangover 😉
welcome back!! *hug*
and thanks for the hangover commiseration (i think you were talking to me 🙂 ) – feeling much better this morning!!!

Participanti don’t know what you’re printing with, but i disagree. i get beautiful prints from my printer, and i would never trust walmart/target/sam’s club with anything other than snapshots.
but that is just me, and what the heck do i know about anyone else’s printing needs. 🙂
Well, part of that may be because you’re not looking at the prints very closely. Maybe I’ve just become jaded because of all the crap I have to scan because of my job, but I can spot an inket print just by glancing at it. (The really high-end $50,000 inkjet printers do a pretty good job, but I doubt that’s what you’re talking about.) Also — try scanning an inkjet print sometime. (It’s even better if you can get the same photo printed on silver for comparison). Notice the compressed histogram? It’s that way because the tonal range is nowhere near as wide as that of silver. And look at all those little dots! Also, again, unless you’re using archival inks and paper, your inkjet prints won’t last more than a few years without fading. Not a big deal if you’re sticking it on the fridge, but a really big deal if you’re selling it to someone for $50.
if the prints from my printer looked significantly different or worse to me than silver prints, i wouldn’t have said that i get beautiful prints from it.
i dunno, maybe i just don’t look at them closely enough, but i think they look fine.

ParticipantWhile I realize it’s early yet, already I’m not getting any love whatsoever in the voting. I thought I had some good stuff this week too.
I would love some critique of the photos I posted tonight if anyone has anything to offer.
a lot of people don’t vote until the morning, i think.
but a quickie on the bee/flower shot – if you could get even tighter on the bee and get rid of the fence in the background (either via cropping or decrease your depth of field), i think that would improve the composition.
i love the cat shot, very cool angle.

Participanthey veruca! just making some dinner, i’ll be back in a mo’.

Participanti don’t know if those particular filters are any good, but it’s a good idea to shoot with a daylight/uv filter on your lens all the time. if nothing else, it acts as protection for your lens – instead of breaking a $1000 (or whatever) lens, that flying piece of gravel will crack a $30 filter.
