Wow, lots of really beautiful shots there. And a couple of potential bokeh contest entries, too, I see.

The contests are always in my mind nowadays. I’m looking for shots of every contest I can remember-scheduled, hoppered, or suggested.

Today we did a hike we’ve done a few times before, but the wildflowers were just unbelievable. I was planning on pausing on the way down and getting my macro lens out for the flowers, but a huge thunderstorm built up really fast between ~11:30 and noon, and we had to really book it down the mountain. There was a point at which I was practically flying down the trail as the clouds spat little raindrops at me and thunder echoed off all the mountainsides nearby. I even saw a couple of snowflakes. We managed to make it back to the car in record time-45 minutes from the top (it normally takes us 2-3 hours to hike up and about 1.5 hours to hike down), and just before the rain started in earnest. That has got to be the fastest I’ve ever moved above 10,000 feet. The endorphin rush when we made it back was awesome. Too bad I completely missed all the beautiful flowers, though.

CISS, a comment in the “15 Minutes” thread by Zero Exponent got me thinking about this.

The “NVC” gives you a stat indicating one’s votes if the total number of votes were 1,000 in number.

What about a “NRP” (Normalized Ranking Placement) if the total number of entries were 100?

Granted, most contests have at least 100 entries, some over 200, but what if there were exactly 100 entries? I have often looked at my placement and thought ‘well, I didn’t get in the top 10 this week, but one picture did make it into the top ten-percentile.’ In a contest of 200 pictures, 20th place (10th NRP), even 40th place (20th NRP), isn’t anything to scoff at, IMO.

Just a thought. As I’ve said; I’m a numbers guy.

    ^^ This.

Sorry if I sound confused, because I am. We went out yesterday and picked a nature preserve that proved to be nearly exactly 15 minutes from the house, driveway to parking stall, and then proceeded to spend the next two hours exploring and photographing. Are the exploration pictures cool, or should I make the drive again today and photograph the parking lot?

    Completely fine.

There should be a special thread in this forum dedicated solely to explaining NVC.

NVC means Normalized Vote Count-it’s a way of comparing votes across contests. Basically, it gives you the number of votes that a certain entry would have gotten had there been 1000 total votes. Multiply the percentage of the total votes an entry got by ten, and you get the NVC.

Do we specifically need to show both the entrance side and exit side, or could we have a shot say from the interior looking out?

If you have a lens that curves space-time, then both sides are required. I also want to borrow the plans for that lens.

If you’re like the rest of us, then one side is acceptable. =D

Actually, if you manage to have a lens that DOESN’T curve spacetime, I know some guys who would be very interested in talking to you.

So it’s less a question of warranty now, and more a question of “What camera?”

I think the warranty is a moot point for that camera.

Plamadude30k I was sort of worried when I saw your interior stairs pic before I went to post mine. Started going “please don’t have done the outside, please don’t have done the outside”.

I realised I have never been inside the Opera House, only taken a brazillion photos of the outside.

I was on one of the tours. It’s one of those fun, touristy things you do when you’re in town for a few days, but you’d never think of if you lived nearby.

Swampa-I was glad to see that I could finally use a Sydney Opera House pic that you didn’t have a similar (and better) version of.

Too late for that! I can’t count the time I’ve put into this between the scrapers and uploaders and the website itself. And I say that not to garner sympathy or attaboys, because I’m doing it (mostly) for my own entertainment. Y’all just get to benefit from it. 😉

Well, if the community wants grading or grading like criteria, maybe it’s time for us to step up and contribute a little?

That still doesn’t necessarily solve the issue of the images disappearing. Or does it? Anybody know if the fark scratchpad might keep posts around long enough to test this?

It’s only annoying because I had some good organization going on picasa. I already have a flickr account, and posting from there is no harder.
