ParticipantNifty. Your solution looks similar to the Lensbaby 3G:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0609/06092601lensbabies3g.asp . I agree with sleeping that cannibalizing a cheap bellows might be the way to go.Thanks. I had no idea that’s what constituted an LB.
Now I just need to figure out how to make it shift as well as tilt. I wouldn’t get the range of 11mm I read about, but I might get 5mm.

ParticipantWell, we’re going to be up to 79 today in Phoenix, with a low around 50. Out at Bloody Basin Rd where it’s dark, it’ll be nearer to 40, but that’s totally survivable with some hot coffee. Plus, I don’t actually have to watch the meteors, I can sit comfortably in the car with the remote shutter and just keep clicking 30 second exposures in any given direction…at 2 a minute, over an hour, one will surely fly by the open shutter…or I would hope. But I’ll be awake anyway, might as well…

Participantyou can’t really read anything from the shape of that graph as it’s sorted not chronologically, but first by casual entrant count and then by votes, which gives the drop-to-minimum, rise-to-maximum shape for each casual entrant count.
Oh. 😕 So there’s no real trend there. 🙁 Hmph. You just had to go and kill my buzz… 😆

ParticipantThose with mathphobia may want to skip to the next post…
…Dude~~that was harsh! But I got a nice buzz goin’ on…
I ran a correlation calculation on the various variables against the vote counts. (For those not familiar with correlation, it’s a measure of how closely one dataset is tied to another. A correlation of 1 means the datasets are tightly bound together – a 10% rise in one variable should yield a 10% rise in the other. A correlation of -1 is a perfect inverse relationship where the second variable falls when the first rises.)
//Just repeating with different spacing; in the original post the negative sign got separated from the second 1 and it was confuzusing. 😀 Lord help the mathly inepted.
The voting graph is very interesting. Mostly, it’s an initial rise, then a period of steady-held interest, then a big plateau with a major climax, then a sudden fail. From there it has to recharge until something perks interest again.
//That’s what she said.
Recently, it’s been up and down, up and down. It’s either hit or miss. I wonder why the change?

ParticipantThen, yes, it’s just a tilt lens. Still useful, of course. With a lens diameter of 1.5 cm, I wouldn’t get much ‘shift’ out of it, I’m afraid. But, as a macro and a tilt, it’s still a bargain.
ravnostic
ParticipantYou could be right sleeping. What’s the ‘shift’ in tilt shift? I’m not exactly proficient in these things (but I think I did okay with what I got.)
ravnostic
ParticipantAlso – Keep in mind, in addition to miniaturizing the world, you can use it in the opposite direction to achieve deeper DoF for macros or landscapes, it’s known as the Scheimpflug principle.
I’ll look that up. Not sure how I’d get the focal range, but I get the idea by extrapolation. Thanks for the tip!

Participantneat. if i’m understanding this correctly the space between the camera mount and the lens board is going to be the same except for whatever tilting you are doing. in your forth picture that appears to be a minimum of 1/2 inch and a maximum of 1 inch. i’m thinking something like the last item on this page. we have a dust collector on our bench grinders at work that has short pieces of flex tubing as part of the adapter but i cant find them right now.
With the particular lens I’m using (Wollensak 75mm f/4.5 enlarging raptar), That’s about right. I have to be right in there. The minimum is actually about 1/4″–the pic isn’t as ‘tight’ as it goes; at 1/4″, I’m left with a plane of focus that’s about 3/8th down the frame. Further away at 3/8-1/2″ the plane is right on the edge of the frame. The other end is about 3/4″; this gives me a tilt of around 20-25 degrees.
With different lenses, I imagine you’d be further away (you’d have to be for the toilet plunger thing!) I can say I looked at all the plumbing stuff Home depot has to offer, and I’m glad I went the route I did–there’s not enough ‘play’ in rubber or plastic for where my lens finds it’s focus.
On the bright side, being so close means I get lots of light–it’s easy to over-expose the shot, which is a better problem than not getting enough light. I can even use the aperture shutter on the lens, which lessens the tilt effect and is much easier than pulling back the shroud, adjusting the screws, etc. I just lengthen the exposure appropriately.
I just got back from my first shoot, 485 pictures, I have some work to do but I know I got some really nice ones [crosses fingers, hasn’t looked] so I just need to go through them and tweek for s-curves and sharpness, then I’ll post in the gallery.

ParticipantElsinore is back on top this week…congratulations!!

ParticipantHow long ago was sleeping‘s article posted? I can’t find it. Unless you mean the link sleeping provided, in which case, I sawed it already…
I’m in the process of creating my own T/S setup. I’m going for omnidirectional (why settle for horizontal only?), and one that I can set up without having to hold it in place, so I can take picture after picture with the possibility of making a ‘movie’, so to speak.
So far, so good. But I have to wait till tomorrow for the epoxy to fully cure. And I have to get to sleep so I can go to a Christmas event later this afternoon. Kills me to not be able to finish today, but if I want it to work well, I have to be patient, don’t I?
Pictures are being taken, Assuming it’s not a total fail, images and a post will follow.
ravnostic
ParticipantI sure hope t/s counts–I’m planning on using some t/s shots myself!
Eeek! 🙁 I better bring my game…
ravnostic
ParticipantIIRC, one was at double the ISO of the other, on a cloudy day. Don’t recall the exposure, though. That was back in July, and we drinks, ya know, so we fergets.
ravnostic
Participantreally like the mudflat sans pylon. the bridge shots are interesting too.
I was amazed when the pylon one got 1st place in “That’s Just Filthy” aka “Dirty Pictures”.

ParticipantWhen I was reading this morning, I read Wollensak’s are hit and miss in the quality dept, but mine, like yours, seems just fine (not that I’d know the difference). Which article sleeping wrote?
//I got almost 3 hours sleep before work. I’m tired. Only 8 more hours to go of the 12 I started with…
