ParticipantThat’s amazing! I’m with GalleyWench; can’t believe this past year has gone by so fast. Will you let us know whom the 10,000th poster is schnee?
Since I only count voted-on entries, actual ordering like this is difficult. I’ll try to think of something.

Participantnew features?? seriously, I’m with Veruca–I thought it did everything already!
There’s the proper accounting of “on-behalf-of” entries (assuming that OBO’ing isn’t soon against the rules)
I want to rework “greatest farktograher evar|recent” to handle total votes, finishing place (1st, 2nd, …), total entries, average votes per, and that sort of thing. Maybe I’ll use that polarizer equation I posted. Or just hard code idle_hands as the greatest and be done with it.
I can probably automate (and continuously update) a finishing place per contest report (think a contest page that shows the entries and those entries’ ranks (1st, 2nd, … 18th)). Auto-account for DQs and augment the farktographer portfolio to show this info.
And I want to expose an easier way to get to the porfolios. Sure, searching is easy enough, but using a URL such as “http://…/fsm/portfolio/html/logomancer” would be easier, and bookmarkable.
Probably need to cull the useless and/or redundant reports.
And then there’s all sorts of internal engineering improvements.
Or, I could just go make photographs.

ParticipantWay to go GalleyWench! 8)
Sorry to say ShutterGeek’s photo had to be disqualified as it was submitted previously under their former FARK username.Yea GalleyWench!
(On a side note, is there anything the http://www.schneeworld.com/fsm/ can’t do?
That’s a pretty nice comment to wake up to. Thanks. I’ve got all sorts of plans for new features. Finding the time…well…

ParticipantDescription: The interplay of light and dark
This one was a success. Early returns show that we have 118 farktographers with 204 entries (receiving votes). You’d have to go back to Black and White to exceed the farktographer count, and Light to exceed the entry count. That’s pretty cool.
And, we picked up 45 boobies.
(the FSM charts will be updated at 9:45:13 PM CST tonight, I’m using a dev instance to get this data)

ParticipantI’ve been kicking around the idea of a new contest site that would remain fun without being overly complicated or technical
The FSM project has provided me with some ideas for a contest site, and I probably have the technical chops to do some of the heavy lifting. Time management will be an issue.

ParticipantOut of this forum, some guy asked me about the mainpage listing time. He said
did they start submitting the thread earlier in the day now? that was the main reason i quit, i’d be in to work by like 10am and the voting was 90% over by the time i’d get photos online.
I told him that tonight could be an aberration. Still, more fodder for convincing The Powers That Be to normalize the main page time.

Participanti see a lot of regular fark users (i win’t say liters) have won contests
Of all the 1st place finishers, 11 of them were posted after mainpage listing. 33 times such entries have placed in the top three. Surprising to me, but I’m glad.
Could someone write code to randomize the display order? That would negate any advantage early posters might get…
That is exactly what I thought of. But, doing that reduces the value of a TF subscription (and could be pretty server-intensive if every distinct page-view was randomized). There are other considerations as well.
I’ve noticed that as Farktography participation has grown, the number of non-entry comments in the thread has appeared to decrease. I’m a bit saddened by that.

ParticipantThis week’s mainpage listing time was a bit of a shocker. Major bummer.
I was hoping that the FSM’s “Greatest Averages Evar” report would have an attenuating affect on the number of images posted – the more entries the harder it is to keep your average up. I suppose that the “Greatest Farktographer Evar|Recently” reports offset the attenuating affect since they just total the number of votes. I also suppose that the FSM isn’t affecting entry- or voting-patterns much at all, which violates Heisenberg, so I’m all for that.
Personally, I know that I can’t catch the “Greatest Farktographers” in terms of votes. So I try to get my average up. That means a general preference towards fewer entries. But that’s just me.
+1 on a poll.
(I’ve thought about trying to Farkback some suggestions about the voting process that would even out the early posting advantage, but each time I do, I realize that (a) “It’s not Fair, it’s Fark” and (b) doing so would damage the Fark, Inc. business model (the $5 / month buys the ability to enter early (and a whole lot more)))
(note, the FSM is currently off thinking about world peace through pasta or something and may not respond)
schnee
ParticipantFor you, yes, but the mods have the ultimate decision on what counts and what doesn’t 8)
I’ve never seen an entry deleted for being off-theme. Off-color, yeah, but not off-theme. The Fark mods stay out of rule interpretation, as near as I can tell.

ParticipantI’m wondering: Does a photo taken from atop a concrete patio count as part of the backyard as long as it’s an open-air patio?
Works for me. “Yard” doesn’t have to be too literal.
schnee
ParticipantWow, two clicks through Wikipedia and i get this:

and this

and a whole lot more. That’s a pretty interesting photo there, staplermofo. From what I remember from uni, stupido (betraying his namesake) has it right. The CPL in your hand converts the linearly polarized light from the LCD into circularly polarized light. The linear polarizer on your lens (a) filters all linear light from the LCD and (b) takes out half the circularly polarized light coming through the CPL, but half still comes through.
A decent picture of a linear polarizer can be found on Wikipedia’s “polarizer” entry. The wire grid may seem oriented wrong, but it is actually correct.
Be careful mounting your linear polarizer on your (D)SLR – the internal focusing and metering optics of the SLR don’t work well with linears (but do work just fine with CPLs).

ParticipantAwesome contest, both in content and in participation (likely correlated). The FSM is pleased. We had 101 participants that got votes – 30 of them are brand new. That’s sweet.
schnee
Participanti think i enter some really great stuff that everyone will love and i get a resounding ‘meh’ via the votes.
I thought that only happened to me… 😉

ParticipantJust got home from work and posted my three pics, and I see there’s already 230-something posts ahead of mine. Seeing this and the “I’m impressed” post from pre-11PM last night makes me wonder exactly how up against a wall Fark Freebie folks like me are.
Do you TFers vote before going to bed, possibly before the contest even hits Fark Cheapskate’s front page, and not go back? Do you wait till first thing in the morning and never go back, or do you check in at night and then revisit later when the cheapskates have a chance to participate and see if they contributed anything worth voting for?
Personally, I vote once Thursday Morning and then maybe again in the afternoon.
If you look at the FSM‘s “Total Votes Per Theme” report, you can see the beakdown of voting for entries posted before and after the mainpage listing time. It gives you a feel for the how votes skew.
An earlier incarnation of the FSM performed an analysis of the top-three vote getters relative to mainpage listing. Almost all the time, the top-three went to entries posted before the mainpage listing (TF’er entries). Here’s a dated version of that analysis:
[img=http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/657/finishers1lx.th.jpg]
Regression analysis also revealed that there is a definite correlation between earlier posting and votes received. Not a super strong correlation, but it is there.
All that said, I echo staplermofo‘s sentiment: I like your stuff and encourage you to continue. If nothing else, the FSM’s “Spotlight On” feature is participation-based: the more you enter, the more likely you are to get the Spotlight.
