I have participated in a project like this: The Indianapolis Star sponsored a book of photography called Capture Indy (which I personally disliked as a title, but I didn’t get any input there). There were about 650 photographers participating, and 8962 photos uploaded- all for an 8.5×11 book of 144 pages or so.

Someone had to lay out all of those pages, and edit the text, etc. It’s a huge job. I think that this is about the same scale as what we are proposing here, so let me share some stats.

The book is divided into 8 sections plus an index-

    The sections are:

    Friendly Faces
    Landmarks
    Scapes of all sorts
    Newsworthy
    Sports & Recreation
    Arts & Culture
    Everyday Life
    Pets

The index has photographer information, etc and page references.

Captions on the photos were mostly as submitted by the photographers, with minor editing. Apparently many photographers can’t spell.

To translate this into something more Fark-y: I suppose we could categorize the contests somehow- Very Punny, something like that.

I open the floor to you ideas…

I have a semi-problem with Facebook, as a significant number of people seem to have issues with their policies, and image compression there sucks squirrel balls.

    3) We form a panel of volunteers (who would be willing to put in potentially a lot of actual time) to hash out which contests are the best and/or “Farkiest” as well as writing, layouts, etc. The committee should be 4-8 people, and will probably center communication through a facebook group (where everyone else can monitor progress or chip in 2 cents without having to be contacted for every decision). My logic is sort of like a high school yearbook. You had ten or twelve kids doing the whole thing, and most people were pretty happy with it when it came out. If you stopped to let the senior class vote or debate every page, nothing would get done by graduation.

I think this is a great idea. A few of us could move more quickly than a clusterfark of people, so we just have to pick a trusted subset of folks who’ve been around a while and have sound judgment.

That way, the “meh” contests are skipped

This, for sure: We can pick and choose among the contests, and let’s face it, some of them have been less than, shall we say, inspiring.

I’d like to see a contest-agnostic section for certain images that might not otherwise make a cut- let’s say something that was very clever, or unusually beautiful, whatever, but happened to land in a meh contest or one that wasn’t otherwise featured.

Some more thoughts: Remember that the technical requirements for printing on paper in a book are way different that setting up an image for screen display on Fark or Flickr, in terms of resolution and gamma, etc. We’ll need to collect clean copies of images for inclusion.

We’ll have to do some sort of organizing, because some people win LOTS of contests, and some people haven’t yet won one. It seems a little unfair to shut someone out of the book because they haven’t placed well, and yet equally unfair to curtail someone’s participation because they get lots of votes every week. I’m not sure how to walk that tightrope.

I think we might need to be more restrictive- down to the top 3, probably, if we use position in the results as a criterion. When I participated in the CaptureIndy project, there were juried selections, and a companion CD that had every photo entered in the contest.

    Woops!

Please delete my 2010-07-07 08:09:27 PM – it’s a dupe from A day late and a dollar short.

I hope we can do better than the CaptureIndy people did:

And if we do have a party, I vote for Indianapolis: Centrally located and close to home for me !

Oh, and I’ll write blurbs at the drop of a hat.

Rain is hard enough as it is. That said, rain is falling water, so I never specified the source *had* to be atmospheric clouds, either. I’m move for leniency here.

I think the aftermath would fall in the “of” rain category. As would pix of rainclouds, etc.

Nice! You can get the HTML for a link to that size under Share This > Grab the HTML if you turn on the new-style page

I found out that doesn’t work correctly yet… I actually had to go to the 640 medium page and right-click to get the photo location.

Actually, you have to select all sizes from the dropdown on the photo page, select the Medium 640 photo, and right-click to get the URL.

Yeah, Dad’s actual Quick Silver acct was deactivated when he passed, so you can’t even see it anymore.

You know, that’s kind of sad. There should be a way to memorialize people’s contributions, and we should be able to see stuff that folks left behind.

I really hate the thought that when I pass, people will start deconstructing and erasing the traces I’ve left online over the years. I’d say it sort of feels like grave-robbing, in a weird sort of way.

I just checked mine- they have until December 14, 2011 to fix this. I’m not *too* worried.
