I aimed and shot and missed.

I thought that “Take three different photos of different parts of the same subject and combine them in a vertical or horizontal triptych” was clear.

    It isn’t.

The theme (in my head) is too tight for us, the regular farktoraphers. It’s gonna be way too tight for the masses. I like ennuipoet’s and orionid’s triptychs. But they don’t fit the theme as it stands right now. I think we need to change the wording to open it up. As (a slightly miffed) kestrana suggested:

Take three different photos of the same subject and combine them as a triptych for a single fark-sized entry. As usual, you can submit three entries. Difficulty – The subject must be alive.

Note – this wording is not what I initially intended. I wanted to force us out of the comfort zone to do something new. The new loose wording will allow comfortable archive-diving and rearranging. I wanted triptychs that made a whole from three parts. Or a whole from two parts and a wider angle view of the whole subject. I haven’t shot them yet, but I intend to at least try getting triptychs of my three daughters. They will include:

Eldest – Eyes/face – hand drawing a dragon or cat – comfortable shoes
    Middle – Eyes/face – hands on a piano keyboard – fancy shoes
Youngest – Eyes/face – hands folding something (stuffed animal? Ice cream?) – bare feet.

Or, I’ve got a selfy in mind that shows me: eyes, spiky hair, Canon, husband, father…

So. Anyway. I think we need to make it open and let the voters decide. Too much wrangling over details isn’t at all fun. And it really, really should be fun. Many of us will grow a little with this theme. And that’s a big part of farktography, too.

If we loosen the “parts of a subject” to “same subject” I’m okay with that but I will be slightly miffed because I lost an opportunity to shoot something that would have fit under the looser definition of the theme and is now dead.

Which is why it is better to not alter the theme too much when it’s a week before the contest… 🙂

But whatever you decide, I still have to shoot and I have other ideas.

I understand completely. I am trying to walk the line of being welcoming to the masses and being fair to the core farktographers. I fear that there will be a number of “three pose” combos rather than “three parts” triptychs.

I really don’t know how to handle this one. I would really like some input from you guys.

Should we keep this one as-is and fairly strict? Or should we loosen it up?

Picture worth a thousand words examples –

Should we allow this? – http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddmun/454335362/lightbox/

Or try to aim at this and delete the three pose entries? –

But then again…what about THIS? http://www.flickr.com/photos/17665703@N03/6141189546/lightbox/

    Aaaaarrrrggghh. I just don’t know.

Ok, thanks U-Man. I went back and read the Theme thread & the first part of this one. To clarify, this should be one LIVING subject, rather than inanimates or scenes?

Yep. Difficulty = Subject must be alive.

I won’t quibble the “alive subject must be in each fame” thing. The soccer player with Sambas isn’t in each frame (and the ball could actually be considered the subject) but the overall triptych fits the spirit of the theme.

I posted some ladybug pics on G+. ravnostic made a comment that he wants to see them as a triptych this week. I had not planned on doing that because this theme specifies ‘three parts of the subject”. If I used the ladybug pics I already have I would simply be arranging three different poses or settings of the same whole subject. IMO, it comes close to the spirit of the theme but doesn’t quite make it. A similar question arises with QueenBee’s banana shots over on Facebook. Looking past the ‘alive or not’ question, they are not really different parts of the whole.

So, am I getting too hung up on details? If I arranged three of these into some sort of triptych would it be OK in your opinions? I have plenty of live subjects around and all weekend to shoot them so don’t hold back if you think I should do something else. I am really using my own situation to try and define how closely this will be called.

As usual, I don’t want to have Elsinore be the bad cop, pull somebody’s pics and piss them off. I am OK going with a broad interpretation of the theme to inspire creativity. But the game should be played within some sort of boundaries.

Those are great, gambitgirl, now I want to start working on mine!

I haven’t ever made Triptychs before, so went to look for help on the Photoshop side of it. In case others need help, check here:

    http://takeoutphoto.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-create-triptych-in-photoshop-or.html

Guess I better check, is it ok to put a border around each piece?

Also, I’m thinking it’s maybe better to start with your canvas sized to 640 rather than putting it together then sizing, any thoughts on that?

I haven’t checked the link, but thanks in advance.

It is OK to have borders with this theme.

    The guitar and hands pic.
—-That’s fine. One of the subjects is alive.

The “panels of the same size” question.
—-Panels DO NOT have to be the same size. Two smaller panels flanking a larger, central pic is common. A 1/2 frame pic with two 1/4 frame pics next to it also works. I don’t know exactly what you mean about an “inset” pic. I don’t think it quite fits my intent though. Post an example here if you really really think it works though.

Curious’ last comment struck me. Yugoboy, please don’t take any offense from my comments. I was simply stating my opinion to the whole community. I was not at all bitching at you. We’re pretty loose and imperfect – but things work because we try not to step on any toes. I’m pretty sure everybody has the same thoughts as me in this regard. Even cranky-pants orionid (cranky today. not usually).

I have one that stretches the theme. I don’t plan on winning with it. I plan on pleasing a few of the Fark crowd and making a few smiles in the world. Hope it doesn’t get yanked.

First, Ill disclose that I only have so-so photos of judicial type government buildings. So my opinion is biased.

That said, I think it is pretty late in the game to change the description. I took a photo specifically for this contest on my way to work yesterday with the rising sun behind some sort of water-dept building. I’ll be miffed, MIFFED I say, if I can’t use it. Also, I think we will get better overall quality with a broader definition of “government building”.

I say we should leave the definition as it stands.

Is the description including, “Fire Department, Sewer and Water, whatever… as long as it’s owned by a government or has some government purpose.” accurate? Yugoboy directed that it should be where governing happens. Are we going to be more lenient than Yug’s last post or change the description?

Do bridges or airports count as government buildings?

I gots no pics and no ideas and minimal time. I’ll put down some money that says I’ll be downtown with a tripod after dark on Tuesday.
